As you may already know Baricello set the fastest time after 4 days of testing at Jerez last year 2011. He then went on to qualify in 17th place at the first race of the year in Australia.
This got me thinking. It must be possible using the qually times and Jerez times to work out how much sandbagging was going on in Jerez testing last year based in the qually results in OZ....... So I have.
Barichello sets fastest time in Jerez with 1.19.832 We will assume for the purposes of this analysis he was running on petrol fumes, new tyres and going as fast as he can.
So by adding how much faster they were in seconds in Oz Qually to BAR to how much slower in Jerez they were compared to BAR we can work out exactly how many seconds of sandbagging was going on in Jerez 2011.
So looking at the top 8 in Australian Qually we can see below the Redbulls were running almost 4.5 seconds slower than their real pace and Ferrari were only running around 1.5 seconds slower than actual pace.
If they are using similar sandbagging times this year it would be possible to artificially calculate the 'true' times come the end of testing day 4 this year.
