Grand Prix 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

After a few eventful weeks in Austin and Mexico, I'm truly enjoying Formula 1 at the moment. I can always tell by the third race of the triple headers in recent years that I'm ready for a break, but I'm still enjoying it just as much. This triple header leads us to one of the most cherished venues on the F1 calendar: Interlagos. It's a circuit brimming with atmosphere, drama, history, and provides thrilling racing. It's also the site of many iconic F1 moments. If only we had a few more circuits like this on the calendar.

just in the last few years we had Lewis Hamilton incredible 2021 drive from 20th - 5th in the sprint & 10th - 1st in the GP

The fairytale of Kevin Magnussen's pole position in 2022 and Russell's bittersweet maiden victory marked the beginning of all the troubles in 2023, as they believed their 1-2 finish meant they had finally mastered the new rules.

last year we had a fantastic final few laps battle of Alonso & Perez fighting over 3rd (nice to see proof that a red bull can fight fairly wheel to wheel) & also during qualifying had 1 of the great pictures, as the storm was moments from lashing down

This weekend features a sprint race, the penultimate of the season, with the final sprint race in Qatar in 4 weeks time. Remarkably, Verstappen has triumphed in 8 of the last 9 sprint races & remains undefeated in his last 6. The last time someone else won a sprint race was last October at the Qatar GP, with Oscar Piastri taking the victory.

Brazil & rain what a combination. something fantastic always happen when the rain comes.
2003 with fisichella,
2008 the greatest legal ending to F1 season
2009 & that qualifying session, rubens home pole
2010 hulkenberg shock pole
2012 on par with canadian gp as the greatest F1 race of that decade
2016 Verstappen incredible wet weather drive from 13th to 3rd in 10 laps

Senna 1993 win
Coulthard 2001 win after Verstappen crashed into Montoya

Previously the thought of Brazil in the rain would bring a little tightening in the trouser department.

We all know it will now be:

Delayed start
Start behind the safety car
10 laps under racing conditions while drivers complain about visibility.
Lance Stroll sticks it into the barriers through turns 2 and 3
5 laps under the safety car followed by a red flag
Restart under safety car
Track starts to dry
An RB pits for slicks at least 3 laps too early so Red Bull get essential track info
Dry line appears so everyone pits for slicks
Perez attempts to overtake offline on slicks in a desperate bid to get a point. Bins it and brings out another safety car.
Despite the circumstances being as bad as the Stroll crash this time they somehow avoid a Red Flag. By complete coincidence Verstappen has the freshest dry tyres.
A Ferrari wins, Verstappen is second. Norris bored himself into a coma and finishes 4th.

Seriously Pirelli should not have the tyre contract if they can't produce a wet tyre

i give them leeway in 1st few years but this is embarrassing they have been in F1 now for 14 years. a year longer than bridgestone & the full wet tyres are still as unusable as they were in 2010 they havent learnt. many drivers have said like 2003. that they would rather aquaplane on the inters than use the full wets

Just fu(King dumb strategy by Mclaren again. That was as close you can get to botching an open goal.

Surely creating a queue behind Piastri should be the tactic?

couldnt agree more that was more strategy like out of ferrari playbook. it was obvious to me on the 2nd/3rd lap you let norris through under DRS

i find it baffling they left themselves wide open to that. if that safety car came quicker. mclaren were screwed

those dutch & verstappen fans are losing the plot. yes the VSC was longer than i wouldve done but the penalty is a slamdunk

anyone who has played the F1 game knows that you can be ahead or behind of the delta at any point. but if your even 0.001 in the red when it goes green. you get a penalty

Its the same rule for everyone

I am going to say this Piastri is making it difficult to help Norris if there is a lack of assertiveness from the pitwall.

I can't believe Andrea Stella is letting things slide like he does. Certainly Ross Brawn would not have if he was in charge

i think we've got an hour to start qualifying otherwise its tomorrow

great stat from Crofty & im delighted about the new qualifying rule in 2025. ive been saying for 15 years at least as i remember brazil 2009. if qualifying cant take place the fairest way to decide the grid is on championship standings. as theyve earned that right over the season
