Grand Prix 2014 Italian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Ciao e benvenuto l'introduzione per il Gran Premio italiano di Monza 2014.

Silverstone, Interlagos, Monza. These illustrious names are the circuits where the sounds of the engines are drowned out by the noise of the fans. Few motorsport arenas can boast of an atmosphere to rival the ancient coliseum of Rome and Monza has always been a pilgrimage for the legion of rosso clad Tifosi.

Monza is synonymous with Ferrari yet this year the prancing horse seems to be more of a lumbering donkey. What effect will this have on the Tifosi and their embrace of the F1 circus this September?

The answer is probably no effect at all.

The reason for this is the love for motorsport shown by the Italian fans ever since the tracks creation in 1922. The sea of red running down to the Parabolica and back along the main straight indicate the devotion of Ferrari fans of all nationalities who are united under a single banner.

Few circuits have been captured on film as much as Monza, many of the sports iconic images and videos were taken at this magnificent race course and you can chart the history of the sport along the twists and turns of the tarmac. It’s also a record breaker, in 1971 the top five drivers finished within 0.61 seconds. A feat only made possible by the lack of chicanes during that era. Phenomenal speeds for the period were also set in those most dangerous of years.

Monza has always produced a mixture of triumph and tragedy, Fangio, Stewart, Lauda, Andretti & Scheckter all secured drivers championships at this circuit while Ascari, von Trip, Rindt & Peterson all lost their lives here.

Only 3 drivers have won at Monza and won the championship in the last 20 years, Senna, Schumacher & Vettel. With Rosberg on top in the championship, will winning this race mean he adds his name to the list or will the Monza jinx strike again.

As for this years race, it would have been hard to see past a Mercedes powered victory due to the long straights but after Ricciardo finished on top in Spa does engine power still have the advantage over aerodynamics?

Whatever happens in the championship we are in for an exciting weekend of racing!

Is it an indication that the 'new' formula is reaching its last legs and all Hell could break lose in the next few races? Maybe, sod the double points as they won't be necessary!

KMag was not behind when they came into the corner. He was alongside.

Can you tell me what Magnusen was suppose to do in tgat situation? I mean realistically where was he meant to put his car?

If you look at it again Botas is ahead just before they both turn into the corner, Kmag then realises the brakes and pulls side by side as they turn in. Perhaps because of this he was unable to hold a tighter line. Unfortunately Kmag didn't do himself any favours changing lines so abruptly before the braking zones, you get the attention of the stewards.

You ask where Kmag was supposed to put the car ? Look at the Hamilton/Massa overtake at the same corner, he could have put his car in the same place as Massa - never thought I would say this about Massa but that is what I would call fair racing.

I should point out that I do know that Lewis was significantly quicker than Nico across the weekend and if it weren't for his dodgy start I think we could have seen a Grand Chelem from Hamilton at Monza.
But we didn't!

So who has the onus to get it right?

Not looking for a fight, just wonder why you felt the need to point up that little snippet?

I was surprised at the commentators referring to Perez as being incredibly fair with some of his battles (with Button?). It was entertaining but I thought he was pretty aggressive and I thought he gained an advantage by cutting a chicane at one point, ok half-flying through the air over some sleeping policemen but it did help him gain a place.

Because I posted about Nico being made to let Lewis win which was more me playing Devil's advocate rather than believing this to be the truth.

Isn't there enough argument and ill-blood without stirring the pot? And you a moderator and all!

Bullet190 your view seems to differ from every other opinion I've heard on this one and as for 'getting off the brake' I think he just braked later. And there was no change of direction in the braking zone. There is a lot of onboard footage that clearly shows the KMag made one steering wheel movement. He did not make any attempt to push Bottas out the way and he fought his position. If you can't fight for a place when you're alongside on the inside of a corner then when can you?

As for the Massa/Hamilton overtake. I think the line used in the commentary was 'facilitated'. Massa knew he was never going to win in a fight with Hamilton so didn't resist to hard when he went for the move. Had it been Bottas behind him I think we would have seen something different.

I'm not expecting a universal agreement here on the who is right and who is wrong but as there is no question here on deliberate intent, no one's race or car was damanged and both drivers were attempting to make a corner to keep a position then surely its a race incident at worst? Why do the stewards have to get involved?
