Grand Prix 2014 Italian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Ciao e benvenuto l'introduzione per il Gran Premio italiano di Monza 2014.

Silverstone, Interlagos, Monza. These illustrious names are the circuits where the sounds of the engines are drowned out by the noise of the fans. Few motorsport arenas can boast of an atmosphere to rival the ancient coliseum of Rome and Monza has always been a pilgrimage for the legion of rosso clad Tifosi.

Monza is synonymous with Ferrari yet this year the prancing horse seems to be more of a lumbering donkey. What effect will this have on the Tifosi and their embrace of the F1 circus this September?

The answer is probably no effect at all.

The reason for this is the love for motorsport shown by the Italian fans ever since the tracks creation in 1922. The sea of red running down to the Parabolica and back along the main straight indicate the devotion of Ferrari fans of all nationalities who are united under a single banner.

Few circuits have been captured on film as much as Monza, many of the sports iconic images and videos were taken at this magnificent race course and you can chart the history of the sport along the twists and turns of the tarmac. It’s also a record breaker, in 1971 the top five drivers finished within 0.61 seconds. A feat only made possible by the lack of chicanes during that era. Phenomenal speeds for the period were also set in those most dangerous of years.

Monza has always produced a mixture of triumph and tragedy, Fangio, Stewart, Lauda, Andretti & Scheckter all secured drivers championships at this circuit while Ascari, von Trip, Rindt & Peterson all lost their lives here.

Only 3 drivers have won at Monza and won the championship in the last 20 years, Senna, Schumacher & Vettel. With Rosberg on top in the championship, will winning this race mean he adds his name to the list or will the Monza jinx strike again.

As for this years race, it would have been hard to see past a Mercedes powered victory due to the long straights but after Ricciardo finished on top in Spa does engine power still have the advantage over aerodynamics?

Whatever happens in the championship we are in for an exciting weekend of racing!

Rasputin,
I agree that if you are on the inside of a corner then you have the right to squeeze the guy on the outside, particularly when he is just behind you. The issue I have with Kmag's manoeuvre is that it's not just a right hand corner, it's a chicane. You quickly go from being on the inside to being on the outside. The middle of a chicane is neither.
In hindsight perhaps a warning to Kmag wouldn't have ruined the entertainment but I can still see where the stewards are coming from.

On another note.....great drive from Dan, driver of the day closely followed by Hamilton.

Yes and Ant Davidson was about to say the same thing on the Sky after race programme whilst replaying the footage until JB came up behind him and stepped into shot and asked if Davidson was about to say something bad about him. Davidson very quickly shut up and asked JB to talk the viewers through it. What did JB say?

"We wouldn't have been allowed to race like that as team mates last year"

Take from that what you will.

A complete bore fest from start to finish, so much so that people are coming up with fantastical ideas such as Rosberg went off the track on purpose as an imposed punishment and can find nothing else to say about the race apart from a minor incident at the first chicane, well that's fair enough because sod all else happened...

Why do the stewards have to get involved?
Maybe because he was punished for forcing a driver off the track in the previous race and they just wanted to make sure he's got the message...

PS

I have no idea whether he is guilty or not as I had lost all interest in the race by then and wasn't paying attention...

Magnussen's penalty was extremely depressing. Taking out the Championship leaders front wing or puncturing a championship contenders tyre doesn't warrant investigation. All Kevin did was take his car through a chicane and maintain a reasonable pace, any attempt to modify his line would have meant slowing and conceding the turn. Why the **** should he have had to do that?! :givemestrength:

I agree the penalty was harsh snowy. However with regards to your post, when you start handing out penalties based on Championship positions I think you start playing a very dangerous (and unfair) game. It should be based on established racing etiquette and the rules of the sport.

I think Grosjean was a victim of this at Spa 2012.

no-FIAt-please In that case this incident doesn't even rate as a racing incident! There was no contact, no damage, no one's race was harmed or driver disadvantaged for any length of time.

It took 10 seconds to decide that Lewis and Nico's racing incident was just that, what was going through the heads of these stewards that was absent two weeks ago?
