Grand Prix 2012 European Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Valencia........ :bored:

Even Abu Dhabi and Bahrain are more exciting in comparison. Valencia is the only grand prix on the calendar that I genuinley do not look forward to. It's dull, boring and hasn't provided an interesting race at all since its inception on the F1 calendar in 2008. Thankfully it won't be a regular feature in the future as it will be alternating with Barcelona in the future.

Going into the Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton is back as the Championship leader after becoming the 7th driver to win in 7 races with victory in the Canadian Grand Prix. After missing out on the podium in recent races he was back with vengeance after fighting back from starting second and being third with 10 laps to go but thanks to fresher tyres he made easy work of Vettel and Alonso in the latter laps who fell away after a gamble to one stop failed. In the end Roman Grosjean and Sergio Perez finished on the podium and it is testament to the unpredictably of 2012 that it wasn't the first time either of them have been on the podium this season.

From race to race no team has been consistently at the very front, in Spain it was Williams, in Monaco it was Red Bull and in Canada it was McLaren. Both Ferrari and Lotus have probably been the most consistent package over recent weeks but not enough to win races with podium places the highest they can manage, but considering the start to the season Ferrari made, that probably isn't a bad thing and Alonso is only 2 points off the championship leader with world champion Vettel just one point behind in third.

It's a complete reversal of 2011 as this time last year Hamilton left Canada with a world of problems after a DNF which involved a collision with team mate Button who went on to win one of the best races of his career passing Vettel on the last lap. But 12 months later Hamilton won the race with Button finishing a lapped 16th. What's worse for the 2009 champion is that was on merit as well and not down to any car failures or pit problems, it marks a horrid fall from grace after winning the opening race in Melbourne and an early run of podiums but now he is struggling to even get into Q3 and convert that into points finishes. Button appears clueless as to where the problem lies and it may not be a short term fix as the car isn't slow as Hamilton is currently proving. It could be already over as far as Button's title hopes are concerned as he is currently 43 points behind Hamilton and has roughly half the points total.

It is also interesting to note that Button was further behind the leader last season and he was second in the championship, while at the moment he lies in 8th behind both Lotus drivers who are the only front running drivers yet to win a race (excluding Schumacher) and having come close in Bahrain and Spain they will want to be the next winners and take the total to 8 winners in 8 races and with both Raikkonen and Grosjean closely matched it's hard to say who is the more likely. But it's Grosjean's form which is the most surprising, a lot of people questioned why he was given the driver role given the way he was outperformed in 2009 and a lot of people said he would be outraced by the returning Finn, but after 7 races he is only 2 points behind and that is despite several first lap incidents where he has been the innocent part in some cases but not others (Malaysia). With the pendulum swinging from race to race it is hard to predict who will have the upper hand in the Spanish heat.

Right, well, I'm not going to respond to any other posts about this subject in this thread.

So to anyone who posts anything about it: I disagree. That's all. :goodday:

riskitall have i missed something? i so not recall anyone apportioning any blame on Lewis at all, the debate seems to be whether he should have given up the position, some think maybe he should have, others think otherwise.

I think he got mixed up with Ted on Sky who switched straight from talking about tweets from fans to comments from McLaren. It wasn't clear and an easy mistake.

Could this be construed as a crowd?

Man on Maldonado's right shoulder: Hey Pastor! Now would be a good time to apply the brakes! We stuffed this one but we'll get him on the straight.
Man on Maldonado's left shoulder: Sod that, Pastor. He should have jumped out of your way. Floor it we can come back on track and see if we can't slam him into the wall.
Maldonado: Fuck yeah!
Williams throttle: vrooooooom woooo hoooooo

Here's my thoughts on the race and those incidents in general.

OMG what a race what a race, action throughout the GP and was that really Valencia?

Alonso - storming drive absoultely fantastic at staying out of the trouble and made some very crutal overtakes when he needed too. Through luck though he got the win but at the end of the day it's whether your on the top step of the podium that matters. Also think on the slow down lap that was just so amazing to see him celebrating with the marshals and the fans, lovely moment and i wish F1 would allow it more often. Up there with my list of drivers of the day.

Raikkonen - Was slower than his team-mate. But really kept himself outta trouble and worked his way to this podium finish. Also looked well statisfied with his podium finish.

Schumacher - Well never looked like he'd get on the podium from where he was with 15 laps to go. Schumachers podium is a good thing for him and really is good for F1 in general. Like Alonso up there with my list of drivers of the day.

Webber - well what a drive. Tried to do a one stopper which didn't really work for him but with 15 laps to go i wouldn't have even imagined to see him as high up as fourth.

Hulkenberg - Best F1 result of his career today i believe? Made alot of his own luck but was due some. Brilliant result for him and Force India.

Rosberg - Stole sixth by a whisker from Di Resta on the last lap. But his race seemed a bit hit and miss really. Think he was luck to finish 6th in the end.

Di Resta - Shame his tyre's were going off towards the end of the race. Really did think he was on for some big points. But he can be happy with his days work. Trying to make a one stopper work around Valencia was a brave move for him.

Button - Think his start to the race made it difficult for him today. Really thought starting from 9th on the grid he'd make his way through the field. But getting points today however little they are is a step in the right direction. Let's hope he can pull something special off at Sliverstone and claim some much needed big points.

Perez - I don't know whether to be disappointed or not with his race. I was fully expecting him to 1 stop today and work his way through the field that way. So it was much of a shock when he was one of the first to make a pit stop. Had he not started on the harder tyre's then i do believe he would have made a one stopper work.

Maldando - Could have been so much more but 10th place for Williams is a decent result nonetheless.

On to the other stuff:

If Schumacher did overtake in a yellow flag zone then he'll probably see himself given a 5 place grid drop at Sliverstone.

Maldando and Hamilton incident - think both were at fault and both deserve grid penailties for Sliverstone. - Having written this it would seem that Maldonado has been given a 20 second penailty.

Vergne and Kovalainen incident - Reckon John Eric Vergne should be given a five place grid penailty for that incident. - Having written this statement it has been confirmed that Vergne will now serve a 10 place grid drop.

Petrov and Riccardio incident - Was just a racing incident really. Nothing any of them could do about it.

Kamui deserved his 5 place grid drop for Sliverstone tbh - Really thought he was driving a wee bit dangerously today.

On to the two drivers who are actually my two drivers of the day:

Vettel - Leading the race by 20 seconds and didn't have a care in the world. Looked well comfortable for the win but whatever was up with his car it's a crying shame for him and Red Bull as they looked brilliant.

Grosjean - My heart went when he had to retire his car. After Vettel retired he was the man i really did think would win the race. Grosjean was awesome and had the beating of his teammate.

Sorry yet again for the essay but like always had alot to say.
