Grand Prix 2012 European Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Valencia........ :bored:

Even Abu Dhabi and Bahrain are more exciting in comparison. Valencia is the only grand prix on the calendar that I genuinley do not look forward to. It's dull, boring and hasn't provided an interesting race at all since its inception on the F1 calendar in 2008. Thankfully it won't be a regular feature in the future as it will be alternating with Barcelona in the future.

Going into the Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton is back as the Championship leader after becoming the 7th driver to win in 7 races with victory in the Canadian Grand Prix. After missing out on the podium in recent races he was back with vengeance after fighting back from starting second and being third with 10 laps to go but thanks to fresher tyres he made easy work of Vettel and Alonso in the latter laps who fell away after a gamble to one stop failed. In the end Roman Grosjean and Sergio Perez finished on the podium and it is testament to the unpredictably of 2012 that it wasn't the first time either of them have been on the podium this season.

From race to race no team has been consistently at the very front, in Spain it was Williams, in Monaco it was Red Bull and in Canada it was McLaren. Both Ferrari and Lotus have probably been the most consistent package over recent weeks but not enough to win races with podium places the highest they can manage, but considering the start to the season Ferrari made, that probably isn't a bad thing and Alonso is only 2 points off the championship leader with world champion Vettel just one point behind in third.

It's a complete reversal of 2011 as this time last year Hamilton left Canada with a world of problems after a DNF which involved a collision with team mate Button who went on to win one of the best races of his career passing Vettel on the last lap. But 12 months later Hamilton won the race with Button finishing a lapped 16th. What's worse for the 2009 champion is that was on merit as well and not down to any car failures or pit problems, it marks a horrid fall from grace after winning the opening race in Melbourne and an early run of podiums but now he is struggling to even get into Q3 and convert that into points finishes. Button appears clueless as to where the problem lies and it may not be a short term fix as the car isn't slow as Hamilton is currently proving. It could be already over as far as Button's title hopes are concerned as he is currently 43 points behind Hamilton and has roughly half the points total.

It is also interesting to note that Button was further behind the leader last season and he was second in the championship, while at the moment he lies in 8th behind both Lotus drivers who are the only front running drivers yet to win a race (excluding Schumacher) and having come close in Bahrain and Spain they will want to be the next winners and take the total to 8 winners in 8 races and with both Raikkonen and Grosjean closely matched it's hard to say who is the more likely. But it's Grosjean's form which is the most surprising, a lot of people questioned why he was given the driver role given the way he was outperformed in 2009 and a lot of people said he would be outraced by the returning Finn, but after 7 races he is only 2 points behind and that is despite several first lap incidents where he has been the innocent part in some cases but not others (Malaysia). With the pendulum swinging from race to race it is hard to predict who will have the upper hand in the Spanish heat.

Is it fair to say that Malodonado was a bit of numpty for trying to pass where he did but Hamilton was similarly as stupid for protecting a position he was inevitably going to lose?

Why would Lewis just hand the podium to Maldonado? It's not like he had been battling him for laps on end.

Hamilton handing Pastor P3 on a silver platter is an absurd proposition.

If you're in Formula One, you should be able to make a clean move on a guy with shot tires.

2008 then. I'm sure you are fully aware of the incident I refer to. Its a good job you are not a Marshall Bill Boddy. I don't think the fans, drivers or teams would put up with your perspective for more than a coule of laps.

So anyway, a great win for Alonso which puts him well clear of the pack with Webber in second.
Hamilton would have held second if he had given the place up and/or without the pit stop problem.

Vettel must be rueing his car failure as he had that race wrapped up yesterday afternoon.

This season still makes it impossible to pick a clear favourite for the WDC or WCC.

What's next? Exciting races at Abu Dhabi and Korea :o

I still think Alonso is the best all round driver in Formula One at the moment though, although it's still very one sided in the team

A boring race that was only livened by the safety car. Vettel was incredibely unlucky, as was Grosjean who had a very good chance for a maiden victory taken away from him. Hamilton should have known better, but hindsight is a wonderful thing and he did nothing wrong. Of course Hamilton should have even been in that position, I fail to see why McLaren are seeking tenths of a second in their pit stops when every other race they're losing whole seconds due to stupid mistakes. Alonso was fantastic, he played the pit stop game brilliantly.Raikkonen was fairly average I thought, he showed little conviction and was again in Grosjean's shadow. Schumacher and Webber were both lucky to recover points, still their results speak for themselves. Solid drivers from Rosberg, the two Force Indias and Perez. What was Maldonado thinking?! I won't deny that he has the speed to be in F1, but he has these idiotic and crazy moments in which he does something absolutely stupid (he has long history of them...), it is these moments that will stop him from truly ever being a contender. Button was dissapointing, he was lucky to grab 8th. Behind the usual midfield gaggle there is again Felipe Massa, lapped by his team-mate ...

Let's hope Silverstone's offers us a better race, 90% of that was an absolute bore fest.

I agree, but you also should be able to know when you've already lost a place. Hamilton had already lost because his tyres were shot and there was no point in defending. He should have done the sensible thing and let him past. We've seen other top drivers do this so why couldn't Hamilton?

Once again it's that bad pits stop that set off a chain of events. Suddenly Hamilton was in a place he really should not have been and it was an uphill struggle from there. It's no surprise that all his battles prior to the Maldonado incident ( and even during the last race in Canada)involved clean mature driving.

Alonso is a monster right now and his determination is quite simply an inspiration.

no-FIAt-please The only reason Massa was lapped and behind the midfield was because he was hit by a Sauber. He drove a pretty good race up to that point, his race was over after that.

Very similar to Singapore 2008 I thought without all the race fixing scandals. Driver races away early on but the safety car changes everything and the second half of the race was very entertaining

I can understand Lewis as a racer wanting to defend the position, but he was always going to lose that, and probably other places. There was zero grip from his rears. Without the traction, he was a sitting duck.

Why is it that Alonso is never even in a position to be hit by other cars? His results speak for themselves, and to me they say he must surely leave at the end of 2012.

I'm not talking about conceding the place there, I was referring to earlier.
Fighting with tyres which have hit the cliff just makes them worse.

I fully expect Maldonado to be penalised for the collision.
