Grand Prix 2012 Chinese Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Racking up the air miles now

Going into the third race of the 2012 season and it is still unclear where everyone lies in true race pace over a normal dry race without the intervention of a safety car apart from that McLaren have done the best job of the teams with Red Bull and Mercedes not too far apart but Mercedes seem to be struggling with higher levels of tyre degradation compared to the other front runners.

Despite all the highly publicised problems at Ferrari, Fernando Alonso currently leads the Championship after a 5th place in Australia and an against the odds victory in Malaysia where the rain early on managed to put Alonso in the lead when the others struggled. However this doesn't mean things are rosy in Maranello as when the track dried up Alonso started to fall back and was being hunted down by none other than Sergio Perez in the Sauber who was closing in rapidly on the Spaniard only to make a minor mistake with a couple of laps to go which ruined his chances of a maiden victory, but he was understandably delighted to finish in second place. Lewis Hamilton showed that he is a more rounded driver than he was in 2011 with a second consecutive third place showing he has the maturity to make the best of a bad job when circumstances were against him when he was caught out by the pit stops (like he was in Australia) to not make any mistakes and bring the car home in third place for 15 points which could be crucial at the end of the season.

On the other hand, team mate Jenson Button had a characteristically poor race after running second early on, but after outbraking himself he broke his front wing trying to overtake an HRT who was running there on position after an early gamble for wets paid off as when the red flag fell, Narain was running in 10th place which shocked fans worldwide. The red flag was also (im)famous for the introduction of gazebos all down the grid, something previously pioneered by Mercedes in Canada last season.

2012 has seen (so far) probably one of the most competitive midfields in many seasons with Force India, Sauber, Williams and Toro Rosso all pushing the top teams for points and Sauber have already claimed a podium through Perez and it could be said that on pure one lap pace, most of these teams are as quick as if not faster than Ferrari, certainly faster than Felipe Massa who is really coming under pressure for his seat after 2 mediocre performances so far while Alonso continued to drag the car to places where it shouldn't really be.

Looking ahead to China and it has been a track which has favoured McLaren in recent years with Lewis Hamilton winning in 2008 and 2011 and Jenson Button winning in the rain affected 2010 race. Hamilton should have won in 2007 but famously threw it away in the pitlane after running wide on very used tyres when he was in a position to win the Championship, something with now Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen took advantage of to win the race and eventually steal the Championship in Brazil.

China will also be an importunity to be the first true comparison of Sky and BBC as it is the first race that will be shown live on BBC and it will certainly be very interesting to see where the two broadcasters shape up over a full race weekend and it will show to people in their own minds which one is better and it is pretty clear that it certainly won't be a clear cut thing and will be down more to personal preference than the overall package compared to the other.

It is going to be a weird race really, as by no means will the Mercedes be easy to pass. The big difference here is the long 7th gear they need to make best use of super DRS, won't be completely wasted in the race, as they were hitting the limiter about half way down that long straight. They'll have the other half of it to make full use of it.

Great job by Nico! Did anyone see Kravitz get blanked by Ross Brawn in favour of Gary Anderson?

Was it live on Sky Sports? I'm glad they still know where most the viewers are...

I'll be interested to see the reaction of everyone at Mercedes, particularly Rosberg, if Schumacher wins tomorrow!

I think Mercedes will build a gap in the first half of the race and then the second half of the race will be about the McLarens closing it back down. Not sure who will end on top.

I'm going to be very wary of making "I think..." statements for tomorrow, because I think I don't have a clue what is going to happen. Got to love F1.

A great lap by Nico, well deserving of the Pole. Also a great lap by Lewis, I think with the form that Nico was on, and the pace of the Mercs in qualifying, it was as good as he could really have hoped for. Also great work by Kobayashi, and Raikkonen, both of whom should be good value against the Mercs at the start of the race.

The Red Bulls looked out of sorts, with only Webber getting through to Q3, I was surprised at Vettel, despite the car changs he seems to be having difficulty getting it all hooked up. Jenson I think was on the back foot from using the extra set of tyres in Q1, which he did not really need to do, he payed for that in Q3, especially as the track seemed to get slower as the session went on.

Anyway, it looks like it is all set for an exciting race, with the teams who have the stronger race pace (so far this year) being slightly further back than they would like. just need to see what the weather throws at us!

just when you start to doubt Rosberg he always surprises you, it's good that he blitzed MS as well and his happiness was good to see.
LH did well again, Kob is stepping up to the Perez challenge, what a boost for the humble customer Saurrari, looking better than the senior Ferrauber team, Vettel is maybe taking risky punts with his setup this season, Webbers is obviously more 'normal'
If the temperature is anything other than hot JB could be looking at a Korea 2010, he really should have done better to take full advantage of LHs setbacks, I can't understand why he can drive so well when everything is perfect but so average when there is any type of adverse variability. I thought he had overcome this weakness and was now achieving his potential

Should be a great race from the start, probably better for the McLaren chaps to steer well clear of KK, MS ahead and from behind, Alonso, Massa and ofcourse SV, and wait for later in the race to make any bold moves

Kimi is also lurking with intent and could be the first time we really see him do something

The big advantage of being a man of few words is people rarely speak of you. Quietly into 4th for Kimi. Considering he's had a decent couple of race days, we could see the return of the ice man to the top of that podium...

What?! I was clueless about who was P4! Well done to him!

the Mercs can;t use the super drs system they have in quali so it will be interesting if they can get away and stay ahead
Must have missed something!

Super-DRS is active whenever DRS is active (it's the same piece of kit), which means it's available all through Quali!

I'm confused by what you mean.

they' can't use it in the race unless it is doing an overtake where as in quali off course it was unlimited use
