Grand Prix 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Who was saying 2011 was boring?

It's amazing how a few non Red Bull dominated races can change the complexion of F1 and suddenly it's exciting again. However before we get too carried away, Vettel still holds a massive points lead and despite a poor (by his standards) race in Germany, he is still hot favourite as the F1 circus rolls into Hungary.

Hungary isn't known for it's exciting races (apart from 2006 possibly thanks to the weather) due to the dust bowl and lack of overtaking oppurtunities, but if 2011 is anything to go by, the phrase 'no overtaking' has been thrown out of the dictionary.

Despite recent set backs Red Bull will be favourites to bounce back at a circuit which suits them to a tee with weather conditions that will be beneficial to Vettel who struggled with grip at the chilly Nurburgring. However Ferrari and Mclaren have shown that they won't just stand still and let Red Bull walk to the championship with Hamilton and Alonso winning in the last 2 grand prix.

Indeed Mclaren seemed to be in trouble going into the German GP as they were off the pace of the Red Bulls and Ferraris, but in Hamiltons hands the car made a miracle recovery to not only take a front row position ahead of Vettel, but take the teams third win of the season after very stiff competition from Alonso and Webber. Is this the start of the established teams fightback?

Even beleagured Ferrari driver Massa has showed improved form recently with two 5th placed positions in the last 2 races but they could have easily been 2 fourth places had it not been for a strong defensive rearguard from Hamilton in Silverstone and a pit stop mess up in Germany which enabled Vettel to get past on the last lap. As Ferrari plan to take the fight to Red Bull, they will need Massa to take points off Vettel and Webber if Alonso is to have any chance of a miracle fightback.

Mercedes are in a league of their own at the moment, but not in a good way. They are faster than the likes of Renault and Force India, but slower than Ferrari, Red Bull and Mclaren and the 7th/8th place almost has a Mercedes name penned in if there aren't any incidents, (which knowing Schumacher is rare)

Renault have dropped off badly after a strong start to the season and after a crash from Heidfeld and a poor race from Petrov, they now find themselves picking up the scraps in the midfield for 5th place in the championship as Mercedes start to pull away from the black and gold outfit, maybe a tweak of the exhaust might bring them better fortunes in Hungary.

One person who drove a great race in Germany but hardly got any recognition was Adrian Sutil who drove probably the best race of the German drivers. 6th place after a strong qualifying will no doubt relieve the pressure that had been building on him and will show to Di Resta that he won't have things his own way at Force India and that Hulkenberg might have to wait a while for a race seat.

No doubt that there won't be any uncertainties about the weather this weekend as more often than not Hungary provides a race weekend with 30 degree sunshine with not a cloud to be seen, apart from the 2006 race which was notable for Jenson Buttons first win in the Honda.

It was a good race and think Button was the only one that could have challenged Hamilton for the victory. Until Hamilton made his mistakes he was the only driver i could see winning this gp, but think that Button did fantastic to gap Vettel after he took the lead and the rest was history.

Think the stewards got it right in giving Hamilton a drive through but really hope that if someone else repeats what Hamilton did that their remain consitant or else this would turn ugly if they don't.

BTW good races to send us off for the summer break. Can't believe we have to wait 4 weeks til the next GP.

Thanks for the welcome :)
Good point about getting the Renault car out of the pit lane, I hadn't thought of that, scary stuff though wherever it happened.
Very glad Button ignored McLaren instructions, putting inters on may have gifted the win to Vettel.

Hi guys, also my first post and I have a few observations:
Firstly (and I don't mean this in a spiteful way) this forum is obviously heavily Hamilton-centric. You could just say 'HE had a good race . . .' and I would know who you were talking about.
On the spin/ drive-through, I believe he was sitting off the racing line and should have stayed there until he saw a gap. But this isn't the first time he's been guilty of such a move (0:42 at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbjRFd205qo&feature=related)
Bad tyre call but apparently his own choice, would have had to make a stop anyway because the super-softs weren't going to last. I'd like to point out that Webber suffered just as much by switching to inters (dunno if it was his choice) and back, practically trading 3rd place for 5th.
And to inject a bit of aussie bias, Ricciardo finishes ahead of his teammate for the first time. Onwards and upwards.

I am surprised how no one has mentioned sebastian buemi, started 23rd with a penalty he shouldn't have had, nearly got into Q2 with just the prime tyres which is 0.8-1.2s slower than the options, while the drivers infront of him were using the primes.

Made a great start from 23rd to i think it was 13th? Finishes 8th and ahead of his team-mate from that far down, great performance by him.

I wish the Toro Rosso drivers would put their heads together and decide which of them will choke to let Ricciardo in. Just when you think Alguersuari is getting his foot in the door, Buemi pulls a great drive out of the bag. Maybe they are collaborating to look equally good so neither loses their seats . . .

Welcome. To be fair, this forum is quite Alonso/Hamilton/Vettel centric which is pretty natural in most F1 discussion given that they are the lead drivers for the top three teams and widely regarded as the most talented of the pack. I think you'll find people will be happy to engage with you in discussion about all drivers. I look forward to some good chat in the future.

Welcome to the community :)

Feel free to recruit some other non-Hamilton fans :D

Thanks guys, hope I didn't come off as anti-Hamilton because I love the way he drives and he dominated the earlier parts of the race today. But (mainly referring to Monaco & Canada) I don't think he should get the praise for risky overtakes without also receiving criticism for the ones that are too adventurous.

Great race. Brilliant drive by Button, Lewis making life difficult for himself, Alonso was the tortoise today and Vettel managed to use his magic finger on the podium even though he was 2nd :D. Bigger lead for Seb in the WDC, Red Bull walking it in the Constructors, what happened to that Renault? Well done di Resta, showed "slasher" Sutil who's boss and great avoidance of Lewis doing his spin turn. Finally, as mentioned in my Driver of the Weekend post, big up for Daniel Ricciardo beating his team mate and one of the Virgin's in only his 3rd race.

One final thing, I'll post up Jake Humphrey's "farting" question to Sebastien Buemi before Q3 yesterday when I can get it off my son's phone.

Very equanimous

Lewis was...........Magnanimous...(where have I heard that before?)....in his post race interview

Like to see a race won on racing...

Though the word/s I can think of for Whitmarsh & co are not so nice..letting hIm down again on strategy

Is it just me........... just hate man hugs......about as manly as a wimpish, limpish handshake UGH

putting ss on hamitons car when they should have put softs on was a very strange decision, very strange.thats what untilmatly lost him the win.i mean once he had those softs on he was super quick, but it was too late then.
i think the win was handed to button on a plate.he did drive really well tho and deserved some luck.but putting ss on hamiltons car was when things started to go wrong for lewis.they should have known the softs would have lasted for hamiltons final stint after what hamilton did last week on softs.

Truly remarkable decision by 'Mission Control' back in Woking. "Lets make the race leader push at 10/10ths for an entire stint to clear a gap to his TEAMMATE!"

As I said earlier, they cooked up a brilliant scheme to keep their drivers away from each other and it backfired magnificently.
On Lewis

Let's not make it personal, shall we?

Anyway, it was an entertaining race I thought. The drive-through was a bit harsh but he did get in the way of Paul. I personally thought he would get a fine, but oh well.

I thought it was nice to see Button win on his 200th GP on the same track as his first win :). Well done to him.
Bad day for Sauber though :(. No points for them today.

It didn't cost Paul a place/points so the only harm was to Lewis.......who always gets a penalty..

All this talk of Hamilton losing it because of the intermediate call is rubbish. The fact of the matter is that if he was on the prime tyre, like everyone else, he would have been leading and would no way have been the first person to come in and put intermediates on. The reason he did in the circumstances is because his super-soft tyres were almost due for a change anyway and so he had kind of lost the race either way and may have well of gone for the more risky strategy as if it did rain harder, it could have paid off.

The primary and largest reason by far that he lost the race was when his team decided to put him on super-soft tyres, even though they'd seen that Webber and Vettel were putting in good times on the prime tyre. The lap later, Button goes out on the prime tyres, which Button confirmed was a decision made by the team and not him. Therefore, McLaren were expecting Hamilton to pull out a 20+ second lead on the super-softs to get a gap to pit again. Quite frankly, it was a ridiculous gamble that was unnecessary. The golden rule when you are leading is to follow the decision of everyone behind, that way you can't get it massively wrong, but ensure you maintain your lead. Had Hamilton of gone onto the prime tyre, he may have struggled at the end, but that was far less of a risk than trying to get a 20second gap on the option tyre. The fact of the matter is neither Button or Vettel appeared to struggle on the prime tyre and it looked like it could have gone much longer.

Well done McLaren you've lost another 1-2 through a stupid brainless decision!

Lewis went well in Quali on the prime....

It seems the Golden rule at Mclaren is for the golden boy......Whitmarsh has not given up
