Grand Prix 2011 Belgian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

It's a long summer and the key discussions aren't about the F1.

As we are in the middle of the summer break, the SKY/BBC deal continues to take precedence over any on track action we saw at Hungary, which is a shame as we saw a cracker of a race where Jenson Button eventually won his second race of the season ahead of Sebastian Vettel who extended his lead at the top of the championship yet again and surely it takes a miracle for anyone to overtake him now with less than half the races to go.

However with Belgium coming closer on the calender, it seems as if Red Bull has lost the dominance it held over the first half of the season with McLaren appearing to have the best all round package with 4 wins now this year with 2 for Button and 2 for Hamilton. Ferrari aren't far behind and are perhaps the best team in warm conditions but that remains to be seen after a series of damp and cold races. However it would still be a foolish person to bet against Red Bull going into the Belgian Grand Prix where the fast sweeping corners and technical hairpins will no doubt play to their advantage.

Spa Francorchamps is regarded (quite rightly) as the best driver circuit on the calendar with the famous circuit having many variations from its original form to the current version which was last changed in 2006 to incorporate the new pit area and final chicane, the final chicane wasn't popular as both fans and drivers miss the challenging bus stop chicane and the 'new' pit lane which can cause problems.

The grand prix has been famous for it's unpredictable weather with violent storms and half the track being dry and the other wet at the same time and completely random showers, the big example was 2008 where a late shower caught out the entire field and cost Kimi Raikkonen (and eventually Hamilton) the win. In 1998 torrential rain caused one of the worst starts in F1 history where half the field was wiped out on turn 1, eventually (after a restart) Damon Hill won for Jordan in a 1-2 with Ralf Schumacher second, Michael Schumacher famously nearly started a fight with David Coulthard after crashing into him trying to lap him.

Michael Schumacher has an impressive record at this track, winning his first race at the track in 1992 and taking several wins at the track with his last coming in 2002 where he took his seventh world championship. However at the moment it is unlikely that he will add to his list of wins with the Mercedes well off the pace of the leading trio of Ferrari, Mclaren and Red Bull.

Mercedes might find themselves behind Force India at the race as the track suits them down to a tee, in 2009 Fisichella took a surprise pole position and then took second place just finishing behind Raikkonen in the Ferrari (who always seemed to win at Spa when he was driving there)
Sutil and Di Resta have shown impressive pace recently, with both achieving season bests at the last few races and are closing the gap to the flagging Renault team who have really lost performance since the start of the season with Heidfeld and Petrov dissapointing.

On a personal level I am really looking forward to this race as I have weekend tickets and will be at Pouhon all weekend to bring you the best coverage from the track, (better than these Sky lot anyway)

Difference between those two...are that Kobayashi got extra speed and halfway down the straight came back at Hamilton, Hamilton had done the move much earlier than Massa did.

Massa had much more speed than Maldonado there, and Maldonado was ahead and looked in his mirrors and moved over.

I tried to look at the video above again Fenders, but it seems to have changed to a 4 minute clip about "savouring Spa"

He braked?
Because Kobayashi braked earlier and turned sooner I believe?
Somewhat too late, but that's only my humble opinion. What the videos I pinched from YouTube illustrate, and I had hoped I would not have to explain it, is that as mentioned by other poster's today, Kobi should have known he would never make a pass around the outside work, let alone stick, because he had left it too late. Lewis was entitled to think that he would have been tucked up behind since that is what the experienced drivers do.

I would not have wanted Kobi penalised but the way this hangs in the air is, sending yet another poor signal that the hunting season is open and whilst LH is target No.1, precedents are being set for what remains of this season, so who is to say which other driver will find himself in the same situation. I'm now waiting for the inevitable "clarification of the rules" as FIA twitch into "Nanny State" mode as they try to further please all of the people all of the time.

I have a point that may back up kobayashi's position. You tend to see drivers hang around like that near another car so they can have an opportunity to pass in the next, I seen it happen on that corner before, and I have also seen overtaking on that next corner like that.

The closest thing I can recall is the Red Bull crash of Istanbul 2010, where we were [wormcan=open]unanimous in that Seb was at fault.

However, I think the stewards made the correct decision in this case. No punishment for anyone.
I'm sure Maldonado was a lucky boy with his penalty.

However, it is difficult to imagine what certain people expect Lewis to do. I feel sorry for both him and Alonso, who have to drive like vicars if they're to avoid the widespread disgust both achieve, and even when they don't do anything wrong are pilloried. (And I know vis-á-vis Fernando I've been guilty of this, and I apologise)

Having said that, Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull are so good that, with regard to Lewis' ultimate ambition, the incident was irrelevant.

I don't know about everyone else but I thoroughly enjoyed the race today but, yet again, we end up talking about one incident involving Lewis Hamilton which is a bit sad. How about some positive comments about the great races Button, Vettel, Webber and Schumie drove today? The battles through Eau Rouge where incredible, what a great circuit and what a great race.

I love the scenery and especially the aerial views, always spend a lot of time admiring the Ardennes forest

its fantastic at ground level but is also very magical from above

Shame about the fact that the trees along all the roads all die off due to the exhausts

Good race, 6 observations:

1) The DRS zone was far too long, they should have placed it at the Bus Stop, far too easy to overtake.
2) I think the Hamilton incident was just a racing incident, yes Hamilton should have seen Kobayashi and not moved too far left, and Kobayashi should have backed off - it was a case of 6 of one and half-a-dozen of the other. But what was really impressive was that Kobayashi could keep up with Hamilton on the straight after HAM had used his DRS.
3) Massa is so unlucky, isn't he?? From challenging for second in the first few laps he ends up in 8th - could have been ninth.
4) Conversely, Vettel lucked in with the Safety car and drove fantastically to win with blistering tyres (why only blisters in spa?)
5) That first corner was a mess, wasn't it???
6) I think that the stewards got all of their decisions right today.

One thing I was surprised at was Mark didn't put the soft tyre on at his last stop.

Surely he could have challenged for the lead if he had?

Hm...never noticed that at all Brogan.

What might have been the case is that he pitted earlier than the others and since he's harder on his tyres they had no option but to put him on the primes?

A lot happens in 44 laps, so i am not sure what time he pitted relative to the others.

Sorry FB :)

I was totally cheering on Rosberg when he passed Vettel. I never saw that one coming. Too bad he ended up so far back.
Another great race by Vettel and Schumacher was really impressive - I watched the video of his start and it was amazing.
Webber's overtake on Alonso into Eau Rouge was awesome, that was some brave stuff.

I felt really bad about Alguersuari though, he was on a good streak and could have picked up some good points here.

He would have done 13 laps on those tyres and 13 laps around Spa is a lot, plus the tyres were blistering a lot on the Red Bull where they not?

Been a long time since we've seen a good old mess of the first corner, shame for algesuari of course but nethertheless spectacular. Loved the Hamilton crash, nothing against hamilton just that I love to see those advertising boards being ripped to shreds. I'd love to run onto the track and destroy them with a sledgehammer, it looks so much fun!!!! LOL
