That was only in one race at a freak circuit where the car was at it's weakest, it wasn't regularly, a bit like Toyota back in 2009, front runner in most races, but at the back of the field getting beat by Force India and Toro Rosso - both teams back then where backmarkers - at Monaco.

And yeah, Grosjean seems to be a bit underated, I always thought he deserved a second chance, seems much stronger after winning that GP2 title.

Him and Vergne are ones to look out for this season.

I never underestimated Gros-Jean. He's been competitive in every series he ever entered. I think the thing that hurt him in his first season in F1 was KERS and how it influenced the rear braking. And i think Kimi is gonna have his hands full with him. I hope not, cause as i said before.......can't stand the guy.

Maybe you only saw the follow-on rather than the live? i've found them to be pretty good. And half the team are Brits anyway.

The only American on SPEED's broadcast team is Bon Varsha, and all the rest David Hobbs, Steve Matchett and Will Buxton are British, which to me is a good thing....:D

Especially Vergne....if Webber retires after this season or in 2013, he could well be Vettel's teammate.

The only American on SPEED's broadcast team is Bon Varsha, and all the rest David Hobbs, Steve Matchett and Will Buxton are British, which to me is a good thing....:D
Agree, although personally speaking I'd be happy with less Will Buxton.

I've done my best to collect the best times and overall number of laps done by all the teams and drivers using the information on the autosport web-site:

Has anyone got comparisons between the team for team cars. Taking the difference between the 2 cars, then plus that average difference, and you have a positive for a better car, negative for a bad one. Shitty accuracy but interesting.

I've been sitting here reading numerous reports from leading journalists both on the BBC and Autosport regarding the problems Ferrari have. I'm somewhat bewildered.
Both McLaren and Red Bull have said significant parts of their cars are evolutions of last years car. Ferrari on the other hand have a completely new car. No part of the new Ferrari has evolved from last years car. It not only has a completely new aero package, even the suspension, both front and rear has been changed from pushrod to pullrod. Both McLaren and Red Bull have had a far easier path establishing a baseline to work from. It stands to reason Ferrari were always going to have significantly more work to do before they could even start developing the new car and were almost certainly going to run into problems along the way.
Journalists seem to have been reading as much negativity as possible into Pat Fry's comment that he wasn't happy with where they were with their cars performance. Of course he won't be happy, at least not until they start making more progress.
The bottom line of course, which these same journalists seem to be conveniently ignoring, is that at the end of four days of testing Ferrari have a better lap time, than both Red Bull and McLaren. Many are discounting it as a glory run. The argument against that is simple. Alonso's best time was at the beginning of a six lap run, exactly the same as Vettel's the previous day. I stand to be corrected but I believe they also bettered McLaren and Red Bull on average lap times also.
Once Ferrari are able to accelerate their development and start working on setup rather than just trying to understand their aero package, both Red Bull and McLaren could be the ones doing the catching up. Barcelona should tell us all so much more.
One last point. these journalists have also said Alonso's time was set when conditions were at there best. Since when have lap times got slower as temperatures have increased. Sorry, I don't buy that either.

The journo's were very quick to seize on Ferrari's ever-so slightly cautious comments from the first day and from that moment on they were unable to let go of that concept. All their questions and conversations with Ferrari would then have been slanted towards extracting more negative answers and they were also intentionally or not skewing perfectly ordinary comments.

This is a reflection of the wave/particle duality of light and another manifestation of the Uncertainty Principle. The Observer Effect says that when you try to observe something, you will always change something about it, even if you do not want to.

Thanks for that snowy. Just as well we can all read lap times and the length of the run they're on when they set them. Lets us draw our own conclusions. Not suggesting I'm right but thats how I see it at present. Looking forward to four days in Barcelona. Love to actually be there rather than following it from the other side of the world.

We definitely don't have enough information to say anything about the ultimate pace of the cars, there's only three tenths separating Red Bull from Ferrari and McLaren from Red Bull. A couple of days ago I saw some analysis of long runs and Red Bull were a few tenths ahead with McLaren/Ferrari very close to each other, but again the times really don't mean anything.

We can say that McLaren seemed to have better reliability and were more positive in general at this test. There's plenty of time to go though and Ferrari and Red Bull will no doubt sort out the niggles.

Your absolutely right. I wasn't suggesting we could read anything into the times, just that Ferrari had set a faster time than McLaren and Red Bull and therefore the negative comments were unwarranted. I made a comment earlier on a previous thread that we can't start reading anything into the times until the third day of the fourth test and even then we won't know until Q3 in Australia. Despite that, for Ferrari to put in a time like Alonso's in a car that has had no real development, bodes well for them when they do start moving forward with their program.

I can't argue with that. :)

Ferrari's inability to step up to the plate last season diffused what could have been a very tight and nerve-racking run in to the Championship. It is imperative that they are competitive and that at least the top three (hopefully four) teams harass each other right the way through the season. That was the recipe for an outstanding 2010 season.

I have a gut feeling we're in for a cracker of a season snowy. I really don't believe Red Bull will run away this year and I don't believe Ferrari will be caught short for a second year nor will McLaren.:)

I am finding way to procrastinate, so here is the official Jerez championship table (for 2012 cars only)!

The points system is the same as what's used in races (25,18 etc.) with points scored for fastest time and number of laps in each day. The constructors championship uses the best result from one of the team's drivers on the day.

P.S. If you want all the detail, it's in this image:

Comment seen on a university wall:

"Heisenberg may have been here".

Testing times mean whatever you want to read into them.
