Gaming Which console is the best?

Alright, sticking with the i5 than.
Wow, that GTX 570/580 is good looking card, but pricey. I used to be an ATI man, but by the looks of it nvidia is the top dog now.

If you want ATI look at the 6890 or 6970/90, generally ATI is significantly cheaper, but the Nvidia cards are 256bit and 320bit cards and potent.

DX 11 will reduce the processor load on video rendering so GPU will reign again in overall performance, but you want a card that suits that processor, beasts and beasts go well. Just hang around for a while until a good 570ti drops or maybe you have a little extra pocket cash to pamper yourself with a 580.

I understand your position with budget hence why at this point I am step upgrading;

i3 2105
GA P67A UD3R Motherboard
8 (2*4) GSkill Ripjaws

I will keep my Chassis with Corsair VX450w PSU and fans, as well as stick with my 8800GTS temporarily. the P67 is heavily OC bar the fact the CPU is locked, but I am only doing this for 16-20months and seeing how the 2600k or the Ivy Bridges play out. I am looking at a 580ti at the end of the year.

Nah, i will be sticking to the 570/580.

You think the 450w is enough to fully power your system when you fully upgrade?

It is, but only until I upgrade my GPU as the GTX 560/70/80 + are all 2*4pin connectors and my PSU is only a single PCI express connector. I am a fan of Corsair psu and memory,......reputable brand.

When deciding on a PSU consider 1] usage, are you ever going to SLI or Crossfire, OCing etc 2] +12v rail(s) are the most important, if a PSU gives 480+watts on the +12v rail(s) alone you are looking at high Amps and thats all that really matters. Watts mean nothing at the end of the day, a good brand 500w PSU trumps a generic PSU at 1000w, in terms of guarenteed 80+ efficiency, High watt per rail and High Amps.

40+ (or for me 45+) Amps is the minimum you should be shooting for when designing a non multi GPU rig, plenty of play in that sucker 55+ (60+ to be safe) is SLI/Crossfire territory. If you have $200+ (US) to blow on a 1200w Zalman you wont' be dissappointed, thoug for a regular user like myself a good ol Corsair CS600(48A@+12v) is cheap and really efficient.

LOL...there's a world outside your front door, you know - it doesn't rely on a PSU or GPU or several Gig of RAM to access it either...

Its just happy hour, it is the only solace these days since I found out that marriage doesn't give more *cough* sack *cough* time. Now I just wallow between baseball, watching sport, shooting and my of coarse my PC......for it loves me.

Sarinaide - having lost friends to their silicon lovers, I just got worried for you when I saw the signs (a compulsion to discuss hardware specs, refresh rates and a general incomprehensible use of nerd-porn jargon). Just as long as you're not mired in the hideous social blight that is "World of Warcraft"...(I lost a very good friend to that evil pastime).

I do, of course, recognise the irony of communicating this via the medium of an internet forum/PC...

I can assure you that I have a life beyond this, I consider myself very active and out doors. I do consider Computers like my Rifles as a hobby.

Folks - I could use a couple of bits of info, if anyone has an xbox steering wheel?

I cannot find the dimensions of either the wheel or the pedals anywhere! I promise I have Googled it until I am Bing in the face :)

Going back to the OP, I have managed to convince my darling wife that we really do need to upgrade the old xbox for a new one. She has demanded Kinect, which kind of made my mind up in the xbox vs PS debate. The killer argument came when we were on holiday and my sons both (aged 7 and 4) took to go karting like ducks to water. After thinking long and hard about buying a bambino kart, I compromised on a new xbox 360 with a proper force feedback wheel and F1 2011 ;).

I haven't quite bought it yet, as the last obstacle was "how are the kids going to reach the pedals?", to which the answer was not a £700 playseat, but me with some wood, a saw, a drill and an attempt to make a playseat myself that we can all use from the same (reclining) armchair. Hence I need the dimensions (especially the pedals), as I have an old logitec from the days of Geoff Crammond Grand Prix 2, which I can model it on.

I will post pictures once done so you can all have a good laugh, but I fear there are some hurdles before all this is really going to happen. In the mean time, the video of the boys karting (my sons are the last two out of the pits)...!

Off topic, but I too made myself a racing seat back when I had a PS2 :D
You couldn't buy them then though so I had little choice but to make my own.

A missed opportunity there I think...

My pal made this himself. It folds flat (ish) for easy storage.

Folding would be a definite upgrade to what I have so far designed. I'm sure Mrs 101 would be much happier :)

The problem with such an elegant design is that the kids are short, so the pedals wouldn't work there :(

Any suggestions welcome - it's all still on paper, so it's not too late for good ideas!!

You could easily adapt that design by having a series of holes in the lower side panels and where the pedals are mounted.
You could then move the pedals up and down, even tilt them, using large dowels or screws to hold them in place.

You could do the same for the top plinth which the wheel is mounted on.

That way you and the kids could use it.

I was looking to use some quick release mechanism for moving shelves around, but wasn't able to find anything cost effective. If something is moveable, then its not great to use it as structural is it? That's one of the challenges... :s

Use separate cross members for the structural integrity, as has been done at the front of the base on the one above.

Two or three will more than suffice.

I said I would post the end reult, so here is what I ended up with. Not perfect, but usable by my two sons aged 7 and 4 and by me ;)

Designed for use with my Lazyboy armchair

With the legs flipped out for bigger people.

And the stand up against the chair for little people (with short arms and legs) :)

The wheel sits on runners (two different heights) so everyone can fit!
