The 2012 Season

Marussia have confirmed that they will not run their new machine (MR01) in 2012 testing at all due to failing 1 of the 18 crash tests, they also will not take part with their 2011 car in the final test at Barcelona.

The FIA making it up as they go along - last year a test session 8 days before the opening race, this year "not allowed due to the rules". Eh?

Ferrari and Red Bull have been forced to abandon plans for a different final pre-season test programme from other teams.
Both teams had planned to run at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya from 2-5 March, rather than 1-4 March.

From my understanding this isn't a last minute new rule that the FIA have suddenly put in, the FIA just clarified a regulation that the teams either weren't aware of or didn't understand. The testing rules have changed since last season since the FIA are allowing an in-season test at Mugello May 1st - 3rd.

Anyway, we criticize the likes of HRT & Marussia for not being able to build a competent car in time for the pre arranged tests so why should teams like Lotus get to do private tests if they've put themselves in a similar position? Red Bull claimed to want to change their testing dates for 'logistical reasons' despite knowing about these test dates for a long time. I just think that after Mercedes got their private test day, Ferrari & Red Bull want the same but either everyone should get to privately test or noone.

Was the specific rule regarding the timing new this year? I wasnt sure that it was, which would have been a reason that the teams thought they could use the extra day.

I do agree though, that the tests should all be communal, with only exeptional circumstances being cause for a private day. I also agree that Lotus have kind of brought it on themselves.

The wording of the regulation about no testing in the week before the first race was the same in 2011 as it is for 2012. There is a clarification of an unclear rule (isn't that a novelty!) but the scheduling of last year's Bahrain test suggests that this is a change from the previously understood definition.

True, the wording is: "No track testing may take place between the start of the week preceding the first Event of the
Championship and 31 December of the same year."

I'm just guessing that the FIA were willing to allow an exception to that last year as the test was due to take place at the same location of the first race and all the teams were participating. Though as the Bahrain testing or race never took place technically no teams have ever tested outside of the agreed time since the rule was put in place in 2009.

In my opinion the FIA are right to stand firm on this ruling as all the teams should have to test in public with everyone else. If the FIA had allowed the test to take place someone would have eventually pointed out that regulation claiming that the FIA are favouring Ferrari allowing them to do a private test that contravenes the rules.

Apparently Valencia haven't paid the race fee yet and only have a few days left to do so before being excluded from the calendar.

We can live in hope...

I hope not. Thinking of going there. Might not be the best race, but a great place for a holiday and a bit of F1 wouldn't hurt whilst I'm there.

Maybe we will see just how deep the friendship between Ecclestone and Briatore is. I suspect that it's a great relationship until it comes to money.
