Sports Personality of the Year

Yeah, it's a waste of time now. Totally agree.

As you say, when it was a big event covering the widest range of sports it was quality. It was where you got to see all of those sports that disappear between the Olympic years and find out who won what and when.

I was expecting it to be on a weekend not shunted into a Thursday night in a middle of nowhere slot.

Plus the shortlist is now only six people. It's all a waste of time.

I remember the days when you had to buy the Radio Times, and send in a list of nominees yourself by post. This discouraged "spamming" of the votes, and put the viewing public in charge. No shortlists. No "expert judges". The sportsperson who had made the biggest impact was voted in to win.

Back in the day, anyone could win - not just one of the six people judged by "experts" to be the most worthy.

I remember they started voting by email and a prank was going around university to vote for Justin Fashanu in 1996 ahead of Damon Hill and Steve Redgrave and the votes were disqualified

A lot has been said about this years SPOTY being box ticking

Rory probably was the right winner because if Lando had not stumbled towards the line and it is payback I guess for 2014 when Lewis beat a very disgruntled Rory back then to the trophy

The big debate is why Luke Littler was not even in the top 3 or the Young SPOTY award ahead of Michelle Aubemeyang. One can only surmise the BBC don;t want someone from a sport where they get no coverage at all winning the trophy

I also read on Facebook Paralympian Richard Whitehead was denied an invitation to the event as he wanted to the BBC to raise awareness about paralympian's success as well . This is disappointing to hear

I have thought about the number of fixed wins the BBC manage to contrive over the years namely

2008 team of the year - British Olympic cycling team - they are a squad competing in multi disciplines

2012 team of the year - The whole of the British Olympic and Paralympic team for the medal hauls at London

2009 SPOTY - Ryan Giggs for 18 years in top flight football ahead of Jenson Button who actually became F1 world champion

Worst one

2005 - Seb Coe for winning the bid to the Olympic Games
2012 - Seb Coe for putting on a great Olympic Games

- Tell me what is the difference between these two awards and why do you need two ?
