Pastor Maldonado

Courtesy of Planet F1 and Tranquility's post in the Belgian PQR thread here's a place to discuss the Williams' No.2

"Is Pastor Maldonado the scariest man in sport? His post-Spa interview was delivered with a stare that could put a weak-hearted man six foot under from a distance of ten yards and culminated in the remarkable, utterly-terrifying announcement that he regards Lewis Hamilton as "a really good friend."

Jeepers.

Just jeepers.

Fear and pray for his enemies."

Pastor started his racing career in Italy in the Formula Renault and F3000. He would have been Formula Renault 3.5 Champion if he hadn't been disqualified from a win at Misano in 2006. Moving on to GP2 Pastor raced for 4 seasons, eventually taking the title in 2010.

With not insubstantial financial backing from Venezuela's national petroleum company, PDVSA, he took Nico Hulkenberg's seat at Williams for 2011 winning his first point last weekend in Belgium.

On a personal level, he is a self proclaimed Socialist and a personal friend of controversial Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, which probably explains the backing from PDVSA.... Oh, and he's 26 and is still wearing braces on his teeth.

Have to say I feel sorry for Maldonado, he certainly could have had a podium today, if it wasn't for the KERS failure, yes he finished fifth, but that mainly because of the incidents ahead and Massa spinning.

Still raced well, with all those incidents you would have expected him to be involved in at least one LOL

Pastor has def cleaned his act up. Although he seems to have lost a little race pace with it....or maybe thats down to the Williams.

hmmm I think he faded in the middle and was lucky to get back up the field again. But I know what you mean. I mean we haven't seen him on Spain like pace recently.

In Abu Dhabi he had a KERS problem, otherwise he could have been on the podium as he was faster than Alonso until the failure.

As for Austin, think he got mugged at the start.

Maldonado was racing hard but fair... there were a couple of moments coming into and out of Turn 12 where he was VERY close to another car... but he kept it clean... he was trailing Hulk and Senna for a number of late laps and then got Senna then Hulk... but Hulk repaid him before the start of the next lap... I think through Turn 13 and into 14... they were all having a nice litle stoush...

Depends on the outcome of the elections to come. I think if Pastor finishes some races this year it won't matter as he's fast enough to have a good seat without the money from Chavez, but if he continues retiring from most races he will be done regardless of what happens in Venezuela.

EDIT: I think the better question is how does this affect my 79 cent slushies at Valero?!?!?!?

When I saw the headline on this article I thought it was going to be Maldo complaining about obesity in Venezula but its not its basically saying that after his win in the Spanish GP last year he's pretty much a national hero so despite the president dying he doesn't have to worry about his backing.

While I agree for now I will say that most hereos tend to fall. Unless your David Bowie.
