It is actually possible to compete for the WDC with your teammate and remain friends indeed it is possible to become friends with a teammate during a WDC title fight if those teammates are mature enough to do so.
I refer you to Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve they became friends during their time together in 1996 they even used to dine together with Damon's wife and Jacques partner and they remain good friends to this day Jacques doesn't even mind Damon pronouncing his name Jack.
