On Italian Job - Definitely the Original

Gladiator - If ever you wanted a chill out Sunday... try it - best afternoon nap you'll get! I like to stay awake for it too though

Keeping Mum - Yup, Patrick Swayze, Rowan Atkinson, Kristin Scott-Thomas and Maggie Smith - How do you go wrong from there?

Man Who Would Be King - Yes Michael Caine again! He features quite a bit in my film collection

The Peacemaker - Clooney and Kidman, terrorist dirty nuclear weapon, very fast, but action is throw away rather than instead of a plot

Saving Grace - Welcome to Port Wen (or however they spell Port Isaac) - the movie that spawned Doc Martin, but Martin Clunes plays a comic stone head doctor

Without a Clue - Caine & Kingsley, A classic take on Sherlock Holmes

Can I recommend "All about my my Mother" if you fancy trying a foreign language film and "Eraser Head" if you want something enigmatic but you won't understand in the slightest (but it is a David Lynch film so it shouldn't make sense)

Seeing as this is motorsports forum, what appropriate racing films do you own/would you recommend?

I don't actually own any (unless you count Top Gun which is just Days of Thunder with jets and volleyball) but I'd recommend Race for Glory (bikes) and obviously GP, which I've shockingly never seen all the way through.

Dust to Glory. It's a 2005 documentary/film about the 2003 Baja 1000 off-road race. They followed a bunch of teams/drivers throughout the event and even Mario Andretti, who was Grand Marshal for the event. There's a funny anecdote from the film..............
....early in the race, the leader in the Trophy-Truck Division, Alan Pflueger, was running away with the lead when he got pulled over by two Mexican policemen outside of Ensenada. (Remember, all the roads in Baja, from the desert ranch roads to the pavement highways, are open to the public, and there are speed limits....like they actually follow them!!) As the documentary's narrator puts it, "But Alan quickly saw the error of his ways, and was deputized." Over the course of a few hours, the two cops, plus Pflueger, pull over all the other TT's onto the side of the road. As fellow TT racer Todd Clement said, "And then we heard on the radio, 'There's a bunch of cops on the highway who've pulled over all the heroes of the sport, and they're all sitting on the side of the highway havin' a doughnut convention!!' "

The amount of DVDs I own.. I have like 25 unopened films to watch :o , and that's before I start counting the late-night BBC4 stuff I often record onto my DVR.

Amélie
Some Like it Hot
Corpse Bride
Sunshine
Russian Ark
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Catch Me if you can
Pirates of the Caribbean : Curse of the Black Pearl
The Usual Suspects
Garden State
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Solaris (RUS)
Memento
Brick
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and... Spring
Pan's Labyrinth
Kikujiro
Hana-Bi
City of God
The Bourne Films
Gohatto

There are plenty more I can mention but these are the best, in my view, that I've seen, with perhaps a few exceptions, or ones I've forgotten.

If you're ever looking for a film I recommend any of those ;)

Another Brick fan, always nice to see.

To watch this weekend:

Public Enemies
Gattaca
No Country For Old Men
Dead Snow

Possibly more, depending on whether I lift my self imposed Fop ban.

Actually that might sound rather seedy if you don't have one locally. :D

Fop is a shop that sells cut price DVD's, music plus a range of books and t-shirts. Pretty much identical to HMV but without the games. Average cost of films is about £5, but even recentish titles and multi film sets are sometimes as little as £3. It's an odd pricing structure as they'll often have the same film for several different prices, for example I bought a boxed set of Spaced last time I went in, there were three next to each other priced at £10, £11 and £12; all identical, no extra discs in any of them, no directors cut or anything.

The only trouble is, when things are only a few quid each it never seems like much when you pick another 1,2,3.... Hence the self imposed ban since mid January.

Fopp, Bulldog. 2 p's! As opposed to fop with 1 p - fop (noun) a man who is very consciously elegant in his dress and manners; a dandy.

I thought you were filling your time up watching movies due to the afore-mentioned "fop ban" LOL

There used to be a Fopp nearby Tottenham Court Road in London, which got closed. But apparently it might be returning. It used to be pretty good, and I think there's another one nearby. Pretty good store.

It's an interesting film and I should probably watch it again.

Can I enquire how many of you have "upgraded" from DVD to Blu-Ray? If you haven't I can thoroughly recommend it, picture quality is AWESOME and the upscaling even on standard DVD's from a Blu-Ray player gives them a new life.

Beware if you have a surround sound system though. The one I have, which is integrated into my old DVD player, won't work with the latest upgrade of Dolby DTS the Blu-Ray pumps out and many discs don't offer a different audio output beyond DTS (unless I want to listen to it in Spanish or German)

Can't see me doing it for a while to be honest, DVD quality is good enough and picture quality isn't something I really prioritise. The expense of upgrading my players and even just some of my library is also somewhat off putting.
