Movies Film Thread

Can't see me doing it for a while to be honest, DVD quality is good enough and picture quality isn't something I really prioritise. The expense of upgrading my players and even just some of my library is also somewhat off putting.

Absolutely agreed. Picture quality just isn't a priority for me either, it's why I won't go for HD TV. It's just too expensive, and for better quality picture.. no thanks!

I'm sure it's great and all, but personally I'd rather have however many £ worth of DVDs instead of a better quality player, where I'd need new Blu-Ray films to get the best out of it anyway.

We've been HD since 2003.

We hate watching SD now, the level of detail on HD is something we really miss.

Well for non-HD people... WE JUST DON'T CARE. LOL

It leads to other bad things too.. such as the BBC's decision to get rid of red button services to make way for HD. :givemestrength:

Anyway.. back on the film topic. I saw someone mentioned Escape from New York, I saw that movie on ITV late on night last year, was actually pretty surprised by how enjoyable it was. Missed the ending, though.

He escapes. :o

I've had HD for years, it's called a half decent graphics card and a monitor, literally years ahead.

Came back from Fopp with:

Nikita
In The Loop
Insomnia
9
Drunken Master
High Plains Drifter
District 9

Not a bad haul for less than £40.

Which Insomnia is that? The original?

I saw that V for Vendetta was on tonight - any good, someone?

And I'm taping Eastern Promises tonight!

V for Vendetta is very good indeed, well worth a watch.

I got the De Niro / Williams version of Insomnia as they didn't have a copy of the original and my Norwegian isn't as good as it should be :)

Good choice. The Norwegian version is meant to be better, but the US version is very, very good.

I stayed up watching the original a couple of years back and found it quite dull. But then it was 2AM in the morning and watching a film called 'Insomnia' which was a slow burner was probably a bad idea.. :D

I should try to watch it again.

Talking of originals, if you get the chance to see the original Japanese version of The Ring you won't regret it.

I pretty much knew it was going to be great before I put it in but I've just finished watching Hana-bi.

What a marvelous film.

Beautifully shot, well paced, superbly acted and just a wonderfully understated beautiful, shocking, moving, emotional, powerful film.

10/10.

OK, I've no doubt this won't be to everyone's tastes, but...

... I absolutely love the Hitchcock film, The Rear Window

The first time I saw this film astounded me! Some guy sat in his window, being a voyeur and spying on his neighbours! :snigger:
But it was a real gem. The tension just kept building and building...

..Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly. Need I say more? :goodday:

Hmm, just updated my film list, couldn't get it below 29 though...
...
The Incredibles
...

.. There were some other flicks mentioned in the above post , but..
I watched The Incredibles last night on BBC1 and it was, to borrow a phrase, "FANTASTIC"! LOL

It has to be the best animated film for a while. I thought "Finding Nemo" was good, but The Incredibles was ace!
The fact that it was about humanoids helped!, but the interaction of the characters was exceptional!

10 out of 10, from me! :1st:

We watched Inglourious Basterds the other day.

I'm not a fan of all of Tarantino's stuff but we both enjoyed it, although it was fairly brutal.

Watched 'Eastern Promises' tonight.

Good, 7/10 film.

David Cronenberg. Viggo Mortensen. Naked shower fight with pools of blood.

What more could you want?

The plot was wrapped up a bit conveniently, the pacing wasn't great, not as good as I was expecting but worth a watch.
