Current Fernando Alonso

Suprised there's no thread (although I had one for his blogs), so i'll start off:

A double world championship vs Raikkonen and then Schumacher in 2005 and 2006 respectively elevated Alonso's status but, apparently, no one told his rookie teammate at his brand new team of a theoretical 'pecking order' the following season ... and the Spaniard was 'seen off' by the young Englishman, Hamilton, into two years of Wilderness while both Hamilton and an even younger Vettel began to make their mark through '08 and '09.

Arguably, Alonso was in the Top 3 of all the Formula One 'Aces' in the 2000s following Hakkinen's retirement - up there with either Schumacher/Raikkonen and, then, Raikkonen/Hamilton - and remains so in the early 2010s along with Hamilton/Vettel...with only Kubica knocking on the door until the Pole's horrible Rallying accident.

A question mark initially over 2004 during which Trulli lead him in the standing until the Italian fell out with ex-manager and team boss Flavio Briatore (Alonso's then business manager) under dubious circumstances after the French Grand Prix.

Another question mark is...Who has progressed more since the end of 2007: Hamilton or Alonso?

A fan. Then came the unfortunate blackmail allegations against McLaren boss Ron Dennis on the morning of the 2007 Hungarian GP which came to light at the highly costly FIA 'Spy-Gate' hearings before Spa...followed by the odour of the deliberate crashing of the Number 2 Renault car at Singapore in 2008 which lead to Alonso finishing 1st in the event and ended in the banning of Briatore and Pat Symmonds a year later.

2009 was a poor year with 'Nando's' mind likely on the prospect of Santander paving the way to better prospects at Maranello one year earlier.

2010 was a fresh start at Ferrari (who no longer had Schumacher walking through the premises regularly) but first half season mistakes ultimately cost him a title inspite of being infamously aided by a Team Orders switch w Massa at Hockenheim (which lead to more world-wide criticism).

Relatively fast, relatively consistent but prone to mistakes and a possible insecurity complex (*) based on wanting sole focus from a team and being only happy with a Number 2 in the other car running behind him. Anything else and it seemingly rattles him.

(*) This is my own personal opinion.

..and so to 2011...

He's underperformed only at Malaysia (hit Hamilton) and China (invisible while Massa challenged McLarens and Red Bulls) and, arguably, Canada...but has maximized his chances in the other 6 races culminating in the British GP win.

He said in his post-Monaco blog that 'Silverstone would be the WDC cut-off'...and so, after some major upgrades, the Ferrari looks a winner again. It might be too late for 2011 given Vettel's finishing rate...but the 2012 regs means they should keep the hammer down at Maranello.

He's signed on through to 2016...So hopes are high of a WDC at some juncture...but not yet.
 
gethinceri - No I don't if your referring to Mark Webber, though I'm much closer than most through a close personal friend of Webbers. I've always been privy to many of the inner rumblings at Red Bull, and there have been plenty, but in fairness to Webber and to protect his confidentiality I've always stayed silent. To be honest Mark Webber is an open book when it comes to judging his personality. He and Alonso are very similar in some ways, Alonso a lot more private and more difficult to read, but the fact that they remain close and very good friends tells me all I need to know.
 
gethinceri - Sorry, my above posting doesn't answer your question. I've just realized your referring to Alonso. No of course I don't know him which is why, unlike others, I don't judge him. I've often said on this site we watched Alonso grow up in public and it sometimes wasn't a pretty sight, but it's also the very reason I choose not to judge him. None of us would look very good during our formative years if we were placed under the scrutiny the press applied to Alonso. Hamilton also hasn't always glowed due to his past behavior and I haven't judged him either, in fact since joining Mercedes it's been a pleasure to watch him mature on and off track. How easy it is for us to sit anonymously behind our keyboards criticizing others, I try not to. The British press appears to love tearing people apart, if they can't find a negative they'll create one which is why i'm very choosy which publications I read.

Who can blame Alonso for trying another tactic... He has watched his peers be just that little better than Ferrari over the past four seasons... He has wrung just about everything out of those cars' potential... He has towed the corporate line every time he is interviewed... being honest about where he and the car are at... he must be dreaming of a time when the Ferrari is half a second clear on pole and easily seven tenths a lap better than anyone else on long run pace to respond to 'how does it look for tomorrow's race' without talking about trying to keep in touch and not lose too much ground to the four cars ahead of him....

Sometimes you need to give your team a little shot... If anything the Ferrari has regressed is season at this stage of e championship compared to previous seasons...
 
What a shame some have decided to ruin this thread. A driver can only do so much with a car that's not responding to development. The 6 tenths comment is tiresome.
 
Kewee I'd argue he is one of if not the best driver at the moment. But I'm not going to believe what he says now due to his history of telling porkies. That's no reflection on his on track ablity.
 
Hamberg - Fair comment. Where we sit on this depends on whether you or I believe what comes from Alonso in one on one interviews we can actually listen to or read, or whether we believe what goes to print in the tabloids. I've even become picky as to which journalists I read.
 
They just don't seem to be the package they were last year, both team and driver.

Both have made mistakes, especially early on in the season and it's cost them, while last year they were faultless.
 
During this little spat it has emerged that there are some rumblings in the Ferrari garage suggesting Fernando could maybe get a little more out of the car in qualifying.

Consider this. I think most people would agree that Lewis and Nico have been pretty close in Quali this season. Hamilton's average grid spot is 2.1 while Rosberg's is 4. I think most people would also say that Alonso has handled Massa fairly easily this year, but they are actually marginally closer together in average Quali than Ham-Ros. Fernando's average grid spot is 5.3 with Massa at 7.1

(Note-I have not included Massa's P22 at Monaco where no time was set.)

I personally do not believe there is much left to extract from the Ferrari, but I do find it interesting that anybody in the Scarlet Camp would even suggest it.
 
Ferrari have got 3 weeks to sort themselves out otherwise the driver's title is gone

After SPa and Monza its off to Asia and Vettel hit the purple patch that was the deciding factor to the drivers title last year

Alonso can make noises about joining Red Bull. Has anyone thought if Alonso did join Red Bull would not Ferrari simply counteract and buy out Vettel unless Seb does fancy taken on Fernando then?

Otherwise I know he burned his bridges at MClaren but Ron Dennis does not hold as much influence now and the Bahrain backers plus Honda may put pressure on Whitmarsh to get him to replace Button

Not that long ago a team in scarlett did pretty much the same thing to F1... goose gander medicine kettle black shoe other foot ... etc ... etc ... :whistle:

They have? I'm sorry where did you see Red Bull say Alonso's manager came to see them?
 
Josh ...... Luis Garcia denied having discussions with Christian Horner regarding Alonso at Hungary. Their meeting related to Carlos Sainz, Red Bulls junior driver, who is also managed by Luis Garcia. The other point to consider is there will always be room for mischief making regarding contact between the two teams due to the link Garcia has to both Alonso and Sainz and the link between the teams with Toro Rosso being Ferrari powered. It's very much a case of why let the truth get in the way of a good story. You can be sure of one thing, Christian Horner is having a hell of lot of fun with the story and everyones feeding off it including the fans.
