Grand Prix 2014 Belgian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

The Formula One season hosts its greatest irony every August; that its race in Belgium is famous and successful partly because it is built into the side of a hill. And while the supposed difficulty of naming 5 famous Belgians is a cliché, naming 5 famous corners at Spa is easy. Pouhon, Stavelot, Blanchimont, Bus Stop and La Source, for example. There's a lot of debate about that other corner's difficulty in 2014's F1 cars, but Eau Rouge is and always will be an inspiring sight.

The battle at the front is, as always likely to involve Mercedes cars. Lewis Hamilton has won the Belgian Grand Prix a number of times more than 0 and less than 3 in the past, but will surely hope to actually be in with a sniff of victory after Saturday's qualifying session. Rosberg's run of poles has been rather unchallenged more recently, but his last few opposed sessions have also resulted in starts from the front. He has an 11 point lead to defend, which makes this rather more fun than certain other teams dominating.

Who is most likely to challenge? Or, even more likely, finish third? Well, on a high-speed circuit such as this, Mercedes customers surely must stand a massive advantage, meaning Williams in particular look likely to take out that second row, unless more poor prime tyre work as they did in Hungary. It is traditionally Force India's best chance to take the good points at Spa and Monza too, so watch out for them.

Red Bull and Ferrari are, as usual, most likely to lead the charges for their respective engines. Ferrari seem to have decided to coincide their perennial bloodletting with their best result of the season, which is an odd choice, while Seb Vettel will be hoping to come good on the promise of the last two weeks and finally start to beat Ricciardo. It is a better circuit for the Bulls than Christian Horner would have you believe.

With the chance of rain never zero and a range of corners guaranteed to entertain, the Belgian Grand Prix is a perennial highlight, long may it reign, and lets hope 2014 will be as good as some of the great moments of Spas gone by.

I hope I am wrong, but I get the feeling that 1 (or both) Mercs will be heading for the pits with damage within a couple of laps. They have yet to touch this year but its getting more crucial that they both beat the other. I'm sensing a Nico chop/Lewis dive resulting in broken front wing/rear puncture.

I would much prefer a lights to flag slogging it out though.

Drivers the other way around but at least my prediction skills are good today :)

Having seen it again it was a bit naughty by KMag so probably fair. Although I will add that Alonso only got the run on him because he gained an advantage by having all four wheels off the track at the previous corner.

Alonso was akready complaining about KMag even before that though and Vettel also gave KMag a bit of a squeeze. It reeks slightly of the age old tradition of bigger name drivers bullying a new younger driver psychologically by making accusations of them being dangerous.

Also - 20 seconds for someone squeezing someone off the track but only 5 for pulling mechanics on the grid in the line of two thirds of the pack? Hmmm.

Very bizarre indeed. The Stewards gave Fernando three gifts today.

First by waiting so long to mete out punishment for his obvious infraction. Second by doling out out the most lenient punishment imaginable. Third by delivering a position post race in a decision costing the other guy 6 places.

But given that Rosberg and Hamilton are in the lead (WDC) it doesn't really amount to a row of beans does it?

Ricciardo - top drive again from Daniel - Helmut Marko must be very glad with his decision. He just seems to go from strength to strength with each race

Rosberg - a lucky recovery given it was his error which ruined his team mate's race. The look when he was out of the car was someone who knew he could incur the wrath of his bosses. Again benefiting from his team mate's misfortune>:(:bangfists::facepalm:

Bottas - another strong drive onto the podium again but another opportunity missed by his team for a potential win

Raikkonen - a return to form and outraced Alonso for once. More of this Kimi for the rest of the season and you might just keep your seat because Spa is your track

Vettel - good race but the rub of the green seems to all fall to his teammate at the moment . His pace after the first stint went away compared to his teammate. His error allowed his team mate by which probably proved crucial in the end . Strangely has not lead a lap this year and could face the possibility of being asked to support his teammate in the driver's title pursuit -surely 60 odd points deficit he aint going to make that up:thinking:

KMag -an impressive showing and defended resolutely on the limit against ALonso and his teammate. That will impress Ron to help him secure his future.

Button - his strategy nearly worked to beat his team mate by going long but seems to be coming up under increasing pressure for his poor qualifying in relation to team mate

Alonso - race was ruined from the moment he had an issue at the start and spent the race stuck being K Mag

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Force India's - their strategy going lone aint going to work now that Mclaren have caught and passed them in terms of performance

Massa - what happened to him . He seemed to go backwards

Well. Looks like its confirmed then. Hmmm.

I can't say it looked calculated but who knows.

Maybe Nico said it in the heat of an argument trying to make a point.
