Grand Prix 2012 Australian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Gentleman, start your engines

Despite it feeling only a few weeks since the season ending Brazilian Grand Prix last November the Australian Grand Prix is coming very quickly into view to start of a season which hopefully promises to be a lot closer than the 2011 season where Sebastian Vettel ran away with the Championship and had it virtually won by mid season.

Looking at testing and it is virtually impossible to see who is in the best shape going into the season opener apart from that Mclaren and Red Bull are the two teams in the best shape which really isn't surprising but the big surprise is the continual lack of pace from Ferrari despite a radical new car (the issues I commented on on a previous thread).

As for the midfield it is anyone's guess as all the midfield have all been up and down the testing rankings throughout the winter and it'll only be qualifying where we see a true reflection of where the grid is in terms of reliability. Without a doubt Lotus have had the most work to do after they had to make a major chassis change involving suspension mounts which meant abandoning one of the test sessions but that doesn't seem to have had a major effect on the team and with Kimi Raikkonen at the wheel it is hoped that they can challenge Mercedes after a fairly disappointing 2011 after a strong start.

Once again HRT are the joke of the entire grid as they once again go into the first race of the season without having so much as turned the wheel before after crash test problems earlier this year and it will be a miracle if they actually qualify as they failed to do so in Melbourne in 2011, but they could be joined by Marussia who have also had problems with their new car and have had to test with a modified 2011 car recently and they will also be struggling to even qualify for Melbourne which isn't good news for the team unless they can pull a rabbit out of the hat with the new car.

This seasons cars (apart from Mclaren) are characterised by the distinctive stepped nose due to new regulations about front wing height and this is how the vast majority of teams have interpreted this rule and it seems that only Mclaren are running a 'smooth' nose and it remains to be seen whether this was a correct decision and one that can mean they can challenge for the title after an average 2011 (unless you're Button of course)

For the British viewers 2012 is going to be a completely different viewing experience as Formula One is going to be broadcast on satellite television for the first time. When it was announced that Sky would be broadcasting F1 with BBC showing only half of the races (live) it was met with uproar from all quarters but as more details have been announced, many fans (me included) are rather looking forward to the full F1 package that is being provided this season with the F1 channel being launched in a matter of days!

Sorry. I let the conversation veer off-topic. At least rain should spice free practice up, assuming it does. Who do we think will be the first to go spinning? My moneys on Massa. :p

Felipe Massa spins and ends up in the gravel, some things never change.

Don't know if we can count it as the first, as it depends on your definition of a spin, but I have to admit I am still amazed he is a Ferrari driver. Everyone always references his 2008 world title bid, for obvious reasons, but I can remember as far back as 2006 me saying he spent more time facing backwards, than forwards (remember Silverstone 08?) I think the Ferrari's handling is a separate point, because the spin was the result of car positioning, so Crofty and Ant were a little generous.

As for Ferrari's handling, I think that is one of the 3 biggest talking points of the session. What an excellent save from Fernando! Him and Lewis have always been outstanding at catching a slide, The other 2 talking points for me were the Mclaren 1-2 and Kimi being top 10 with only about 7 minutes of proper running. He seems straight back into his stride.

the BBC 5 live commentary seems very impressive so far. Really like the combination of Ben Edwards and Jamie Alguersuari in commentary and then James Allen in the pit lane getting snippets off Gary Anderson. Ben Edwards clearly knows much more technically than David Croft ever will.

I am a little confused though because I thought James Allen was leading the commentary on 5 live, but maybe they're giving Ben Edwards a warm up for this first race?

Another thing is that Surely Ben Edwards will split off for the Qualifying and Race with DC and let James Allen do the 5 live?

Won't say much on this, as we will end up going off-topic, but pleased to hear it was working so well. Yeah, interesting they have Ben doing it. I suspect James Allen will takeover from here on in.

Pretty slow start to the year, but not a bad session.

HRT look hopeless.
Massa having issues.
McLaren feeling confident.
Red Bull spouting Flo-Vis.
Mercedes getting ready to mount a challenge.

And I think Santander had something to do with that broadcast.

quick update on weather:
just started raining 5 minutes ago, enough to make the track which had just become dry, wet again.
Does not look like its going to stop anytime soon

The teams are not going to like this. I can see a few teams risking it even if it is wet, just to get some data on the board. FP3 is going to be manic at this rate...

Not that he needed it. Interesting day. Mercedes are catching everyone's eye and Red Bull being far from spectacular. I wouldn't like to call this one. I think if Red Bull are not the fastest car it will make my weekend.

Nothing can be read from these times. The track is green. It is wet.The teams have two flyaway races back to back and none of them will risk damaging their cars due to lack of spares.

I wasn't talking of the times when mentioning Mercedes catching people's eye. They just genuinely looked quick, as did Mclaren and Red Bull, but Red Bull really haven't stood out like in the past. I can see Mercedes, Mclaren and Red Bull being split by the smallest of margins.

This is possibly the most I've ever been excited for a season opener. So many good drivers.

You must have been watching something different to me then.To my eyes none of them were pushing their cars at all due to the conditions just touring around gathering data.

Webbers helmet cam was interesting. I recon he has no idea where his nose cone or front wing are, both totally obscured by the high slab of the nose.

I still think the Mercedes looked settled and quick, topping the speed traps, while Ferrari looked like a handful - or am I reading too much into this. Times aren't everything, so I doubt Ferrari are pleased even with their decent times.

Downbeat? I enjoyed the practice sessions. They were slow for the first hour in both, but there was a real crescendo of times late on. Weather caught a few drivers out too - particularly Massa.

This could prove interesting tomorrow. Then the guessing games can stop.

Asked by Sky Sports' Ted Kravitz during The F1 Show whether he thought Mercedes might be about to spring a surprise this season, Horner said it was still impossible to tell where exactly the field was in relation to Red Bull - although did reveal his team certainly hadn't shown their low-fuel hand yet, the same tactic employed by the team to devastating effect last season.
"I've got no idea [about Mercedes]. They've got some very capable people..." the RBR Team Principal said.
"Honestly, until everybody - as Sebastian [Vettel] put it - pulls their trousers down tomorrow afternoon we're not going to know.
"They looked like they've made a good step, Lotus look like they've made a good step, McLaren look in great shape, hopefully we can be competitive too.
"But I think only really tomorrow afternoon - that will be the first time that we've taken the fuel out of our car this winter - that'll we'll see where we are."
