Team History

The Mercedes team history splits into two parts. In 1954 the famous pre-war Silver Arrows entered the F1 world championship and recorded a 1-2 at their first race. Fangio went on to win the drivers championship that year and again in 1955. Mercedes withdrew at the end of the 1955 season after the accident which killed 80 spectators at Le Mans which involved one of their cars.

The current team entered F1 in 2010 after Mercedes bought Brawn Grand Prix. Brawn Grand Prix, winners of the Drivers Championship, with Jenson Button, and the constructor’s championship in 2009, grew out of the ashes of Honda’s F1 entry after Honda had withdrawn from F1 at the end of the 2008 season after only a single Grand Prix win for Button in Hungary 2006.

Prior to the Honda takeover in 2006 the team had raced under the name of British America racing which had acquired the assets and race entry of the Tyrrell F1 team in 1999. BAR competed in 118 races without a single victory. The high points for the team were 2 pole positions (both for Button – San Marino 2004 and Canada 2005) and 2nd in the constructors championship in 2004.

Tyrrell were amongst the most successful private F1 teams taking part in 463 Grands Prix, scoring 33 victories and 3 Drivers Championships, all with Jackie Stewart.

2010

Having replaced Button and Barrichello with Nico Rosberg and 7 times WDC Michael Schumacher many expected great things of the new Mercedes team in 2010 but they had an indifferent season.

Rosberg managed 3 podiums for the team but Schumacher, coming back from retirement, struggled with the new cars, tyres and limited testing under the revised regulations. The team finished 4th in the Constructors Championship.

2011

For 2011 Mercedes retain the same driver line up and are hoping for better things from their MGP W02 chassis.

It is for real. I think Merc have deliberately made it look ludicrous to highlight the stupidity of some of Bernie's comments and ideas. Here's the prototype.LOL

What happens when they get to Monza. The noise levels are a bone of contention there, I would not be surprised if the anti-noise campaign took out an injunction over these monstrocities.

I think what Merc are saying to Bernie Ecclestone with this new exhaust is something along the lines of ......you asked us to produce a new spec engine which we did to superb effect. The speed of this V6 turbo will likely match last years V 8 by the end of the year, or even sooner. In the meantime we have some excellent racing with drivers having to work harder for car control. And yet you moan about the noise, ok, we'll give you noise as well. But actions speak louder than words. That trumpet speaks volumes.

It's worth pointing out that this isn't Mercedes - it's a joint attempt by the FIA, the engine manufacturers and all of the teams.
Mercedes just happen to be the test bed.

Although Mercedes is conducting the test, all three engine manufacturers have been part of the process leading to this experiment.

"We are fully involved and engaged in the work that's going on, led by the FIA," Renault Sport F1 deputy managing director (technical) Rob White told AUTOSPORT.

"Mercedes have shared their initial results from a dyno test of this device and the FIA have got some acoustic consultants who have visited us and have had access to our existing dyno test results, including sound measurements.

"They are doing some further work at our factory. We are in an exploratory phase, trying to respond to the subject."

Why did they buy their homes next door to an F1 circuit then, if they wanted piece and quiet why don't they just **** off and live somewhere else? F1 has been racing there for 64 bloody years it beggars belief that some people can move into an area where they know there is going to be noise and then proceed to complain about the bloody noise..

That's what happened at Croft circuit. Houses were built next to the circuit, people moved in, and then complained that the noise was too loud; hence why croft is on restricted days per year!

After viewing the Trumpet Merc I've decided I'm more depressed at the fact that some people think this is ok and acceptable than the fact its actually happening.

Why not paint over the mona lisa in bright orange and greens eh? I mean people will see it better and no one will notice.

I'm surprised they've done that so early. I'd have thought they'd have waited to see how the season plays out before they committed to the same line up next year.

It's one way of keeping Nico on board and 'engaged'. Perhaps, they are also hoping that he will play ball - once they decide what ball that is!

Maybe Nico saw it as a play fair ticket - the next two years will give us the answers.
