They're using a perfectly rational and simple system. In fact it's exactly the system you would use in a meeting with all the drivers but this way it's all sorted out before testing starts and without dragging them in from all corners of the world to talk about it.

Has Vettel chosen yet or is he just keeping number 1 till he retires.

Well I think each year's champion will get #1 for the next year, so Vettel will be keeping it until he retires, whether he wants to or not.

We haven't heard anything about Vettel yet I don't think so he could still take 8 (even if he decides to race with 1 in 2014 he gets first pick the number he'll use when he's eventually not champion). It's also possible that some of the numbers in the table will turn out to be wrong so although it's likely Grosjean will be getting 8 it's not a done deal.

As much as I'd love to see that I'm pretty sure he'll pick some historically significant number, he's a huge F1 fan.

Some drivers such as Perez have only chosen one number and there is no guarantee he will get that, and Kvyat,Bianchi and Kimi have all gone for 7 as their first choice so tough luck to Jules and Daniil if I'm reading the rules correctly...
