And so we enter the final phase of the 2017 season and we are now at the point where the points leading driver can win the title should his rival finish lower than a certain position (in this case, 4th I believe). It just so happens that we arrive at a track where the Mercedes team have always ran well having won the last 3 races held there. Also, of the 5 races held to date, Hamilton has won 4 of them and his title rival Sebastian Vettel the other.

Quite why Ferrari have managed to implode in the second half of the season remains to be seen. Kimi hasn't really been in the races all year and Seb seems to be losing the plot at every opportunity. The increasing speed, reliability and confidence from the Red Bull camp has not helped matters but any hope of this season being a close two way battle between Vettel and Hamilton disappeared a long time ago. Only a monumental disaster could stop Hamilton from winning the title now.

As for the track, its always been a popular one with drivers, teams and fans and to be honest definitely rates as one of the least worst 'Tilkedromes'. Turn one has given us some exciting moments in previous races and Nico Rosberg credits Hamilton's wide elbows in 2015 for giving him the drive to take the 2016 title as he vowed not to let a driver do that to him again. The remainder of the track contains a few nods to various circuits around the world.

The thorn in Mercedes side at the last few races has been Red Bull and they will be waiting to pounce should they get the chance of a run at the Mercedes cars.

You know that F1 is in something of a state when outside of the top 6 the odds of another car winning a race have been quoted by some book makers as 1000/1. There are many squabbles throughout the midfield with those all important points bringing home an extra few million dollars. With the departure of Jolyon Palmer from Renault all eyes will be on Carlos Sainz to see if he can get closer to Hulkenberg. Meanwhile back at Sainz's old team, Daniel Kyvat is set to make his latest comeback to racing.

Can Hamilton win the title here then?

Is it possible that Honda might have a say in who drives the Toro Rosso? Matsushita?
 
Someone like Alexander Rossi would be good PR... surely they are not thinking of Sean Gelael? Its an odd thing for Gasly to do to improve his credentials unless as someone pointed out Honda had a say in the matter

I'd very doubt Jolyon Palmer will get a chance in a TR
 
OK, so he can stay on track for the required time without getting tired. Do WEC drivers have a super licence?
 
as i saying in suzuka from my calculations constructors over in Austin & Drivers over in Mexico. constructors because realistically anything other than a ferrari 1-2 & its over. then drivers because if Vettel wins with Lewis 2nd in austin, then Lewis with a 52pt lead would only have to finish ahead of vettel in mexico. if vettel didnt finish in top 8 lewis could retire & still be champion with 2 to spare in mexico. but vettel problems in Malaysia & Japan havent been enjoyable, even if he is the "enemy", because this season deserved a fitting title decider. but as i put on chat vettel cant blame unreliability in Malaysia or Japan. because its Singapore that has finished his title challenge as hypothetically Lewis wouldve only had 19pt lead not 59pt lead. as im thinking instead of 1st. probally wouldve been 5th so - 15pts (44pts) & then +25 for vettel likely win in singapore. as he had absoultely no need to make that move acting like he was in austraila not business end of the season

how did red bull academy go from them queuing up. to them ran out of drivers. as thinking i remember buemi got moved on because he had 2 years & the queue as they were talking about as they had Riccardio, Kyvat, Felix Da Costa, Mitch Evans, Brendan Hartley JE Vergne & others in lower formula on conveyor belt. now 5yrs later kyvat still there as there no one else. they are scraping about for ex academy drivers. or other company drivers like matshuita or even sean gelael who shouldnt be within a 100 mile radius of an f1 drive
 
Brendan Hartley does have a super licence! Well done for a sensible suggestion FB!

And only these other 34! Points do not go on until the end of a championship so the likes Russell have not had theirs granted yet......although I'm pretty sure if an F1 team pushed that with the FIA they'd get it early.

Hartley confirmed!

Hartley joins Toro Rosso for Austin F1 race

Has to be the strangest F1 call up since Andre Lotterer did a one off for Caterham. Means we'll have two Le Mans winners in the field.

Hartley had probably all but given up on F1 but now he finds himself in the position where Torro Rosso are desperate to find any alternative to Kvyat. All he needs to do is match him this weekend and I reckon they'll offer him the seat.
 
yeah it very strange calling up a guy who was red bull reserve driver 7 years ago. but do we think he has a shot at toro rosso seat next year if he beats kyvat in austin because there is 1 spot up for grabs because I just cant imagine Kyvat being there in 2018 because it goes against the principles of toro rosso as blooding inexperienced "youngsters" & the reason why red bull got rid of 1 of F1's lost talents in Buemi because he had his "time" there we are with Kyvat at a dead end & walked the plank in spain 2016, just been perched at the end for nearly 2 years,
 
As RasputinLives would probably tell you with increasing frustration, none of the people otherwise suggested have got a superlicence. Due to their policies, he was just about the only option.

All means that Toro Rosso have changed their full driver line-up in-season between two consecutive races. Must be a while since anyone has done that one.
 
I think the honour should belong to Prost in 2001.

They started the season with Alesi and Mazzacane, then changed to Alesi and Burti.

Next Alesi left to join Jordan and Frentzen joined in his place.

Finally Burti left and Thomas Enge finished the season with Frentzen.

The change from Alesi / Burti to Frentzen / Enge took 3 races. Not quite the same as consecutive races but pretty close.
 
As I recall, Jordan had three drivers in one seat in three races that year: Frentzen, Zonta and Alesi.

I believe save for exceptional circumstances, they’re only allowed four drivers a season, which is why Caterham had to bring back Kobayashi in 2014 for their Abu Dhabi crowdfunded swansong. (They’d run Ericsson and Kobayashi mostly, Lotterer in the aforementioned run off, and had Will Stevens in the other seat.)
