The Qualification World Championship 2009

I have had a look at the first three sessions of qualifying in F1 2009 and completed a qualifying championship with these rules:

A grid-drop for a previous incident or gearbox/engine change is not taken into account
A grid-drop for obstructing an opponent is taken into account
Disqualifications for technical resons (eg. Toyota in Australia) are counted...
A 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 system with countback as a tie-breaker

Have a guess who is leading...!

  1. J. Button GBR Brawn 24
  2. S. Vettel GER Red Bull 22
  3. R. Barrichello BRZ Brawn 18
  4. J. Trulli ITA Toyota 11
  5. M. Webber AUS Red Bull 9
  6. N. Rosberg GER Williams 9
  7. F. Alonso ESP Renault 8
  8. R. Kubica POL BMW Sauber 6
  9. T. Glock GER Toyota 4
  10. F. Massa BRZ Ferrari 3
  11. K. Raikkonen FIN Ferrari 3
All other drivers on 0.

  1. Brawn 42
  2. Red Bull 31
  3. Toyota 15
  4. Williams 9
  5. Renault 8
  6. BMW Sauber 6
  7. Ferrari 6
All other teams on 0.

I will endevour to update the Championship after every qualifying session. I know its a pointless bit of trivia, but lets have some pointless trivia rather than lie-gate slanging matches please!

Re: The Qualification World Championship

Good idea TBY. It might not be pointless (pun not intended) if those in power are serious about bringing back the point for pole.

There is one thing that slightly concerns me though - 3 wins from pole out of 3. It seems that if drivers have the pace to get pole in qualifying that they have the pace to scamper away (not quite JB in Sepang but he still found himself way in front after the first stint). The new rules are working in the midfield but we aren't really seeing a serious tussle for the win. It's early days yet and the weather hasn't exactly helped but I will become more sceptical of this season if this trend continues.

Re: The Qualification World Championship

Thanks tby. Williams should definitely have scored more points than they've managed so far. :(

Re: The Qualification World Championship

What's interesting is that Williams feature in both the drivers' and constructors tables and McLaren don't yet in the real tables McLaren are above Williams in both.

Re: The Qualification World Championship

Hmmm. Intresting
It really shows how poor the Willams has been in race Trim so far. Top 3 are obivous there doing good all round. It'll be inresting so see how It differs from the Real Championchip's over the course of the season.

In a loosely based point, I have always believed that a point should be given to pole, under the current rules that would certainly mix things up a bit more in Quali 3 I think, Teams going short on fuel to gain the extra point?

It would be interesting, maybe 'Nando would go on a glory run for pole with no sustainable race strategy...

It will differ from the real Championship, unless its halted in the middle of Q2 and abandoned as a bad job I will not be playing the half-points game!

QWC standings round 5 - Spain

QWDC
1. Button 39
2. [bg=#110044]Vettel 36[/bg]
3. Barrichello 27
4. Trulli 23
5. Glock 15
6. [bg=#110044]Webber 13[/bg]
7. [bg=#EFFF00]Alonso 11[/bg]
8. [bg=#AA0000]Massa 9[/bg]
9. [bg=#000055]Rosberg 9[/bg]
10. Kubica 6
11. [bg=#CCCCCC]Hamilton 4[/bg]
12. [bg=#AA0000]Raikkonen 3[/bg]

Others on zero.

QWCC
1. Brawn 66
2. [bg=#110044]Red Bull 49[/bg]
3. Toyota 38
4. [bg=#AA0000]Ferrari 12[/bg]
5. [bg=#EFFF00]Renault 11[/bg]
6. [bg=#000055]Williams 9[/bg]
7. BMW Sauber 6
8. [bg=#CCCCCC]McLaren 4[/bg]

More quali success for Jenson Button and Ross Brawn gives him a 3 point lead in the QWDC.

This statistic was brought to you by teabagyokel, who feels that it might not be as good as Brian W. Lawrence's stats (so I added colour)!

Re: The Qualification World Championship

Ok, so I've given up on the colour, but after Monaco the QWC stands thus:

DRIVERS' CHAMPIONSHIP
  1. BUTTON 49
  2. VETTEL 41
  3. BARRICHELLO 33
  4. TRULLI 23
  5. GLOCK 15
  6. WEBBER 14
  7. MASSA 13
  8. ROSBERG 12
  9. RAIKKONEN 11
  10. ALONSO 11
  11. KUBICA 6
  12. HAMILTON 4
  13. KOVALAINEN 2
CONSTRUCTORS' CHAMPIONSHIP
  1. BRAWN GP 82
  2. RED BULL RACING 55
  3. TOYOTA 38
  4. SCUDERIA FERRARI 24
  5. WILLIAMS 12
  6. RENAULT 11
  7. BMW SAUBER 6
  8. McLAREN 6

So that's all good for Button/Brawn after Monaco, but Vettel/RBR are much closer in Quali than in Race trim!

After European GP...

  • Alonso ahead of Hamilton on countback
  • Glock ahead of Kovalainen ahead of Massa on countback
  • 8 Drivers with no points listed; Toro Rosso only constructor on zero
Sebastien Vettel still leads this Championship, whilst reigning double Qualifying World Champion Lewis Hamilton is bounding up the order with recent results. He has scored 19 of his 23 points in the last 3 Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso, Robert Kubica and Adrian Sutil have scored all their teams' points thus far, whilst the top 2 of Vettel and Button are the only drivers to score at every event.

Re: The Qualification World Championship

Current scores for Qualification World Championship

Barrichello given points for 5th place for Singapore Grand Prix, results hereafter adjusted accordingly.

EDIT 27/9: Nick Heidfeld's point at the Singapore GP has been stripped for the weight issue and given to Robert Kubica. BMW's point score is, of course, unaffected.

Re: The Qualification World Championship

Since no-one seems to know who will start where in the race tomorrow, I will hold fire until we find out what is going on. I intend to punish all drivers for their indiscretions as I don't like the idea of accelerating in yellow-flag zones.

Re: The Qualification World Championship

On your Back Catalogue thread though you factored out grid penalties.
Don't you need to keep it consistent?

Or is it only certain penalties which you're not counting?
