Russian GP to be cancelled?

As you may be well aware of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This is now further exacerbated by the flight MH17 being shot down within the region. Bernie is now under pressure from politicians to cancel the race later this year

Knowing Bernie's stance - I think this will fall on deaf ears as F1 again should be not interfere with politics

Nope. Apparently they're paying $60 million to have the race there. Bernie wouldn't say no to that, and a few people saying 'please don't go there' wouldn't stop him.

This makes me laugh. I've seen a lot about "cancel the Grand Prix", "boycott the World Cup" etc.

Knowing the modus operandi of Messers Ecclestone and Blatter, the best way to punish Russia is to inflict the Grand Prix and World Cup upon them, they'll just come away remembering an event they were unsuccessful in and wondering where all their money had gone.

If he won't cancel Bahrain, he won't cancel Sochi.

Should we run a book on attendance?

The Ukraine separatists could attend in shifts over the weekend, plumped up by Russian oligarchs and their retinue!

FFS who in their right mind will want to go there now? Or indeed beforehand?

This is a non-event.

First Russia have not admitted to 'supporting' the russian separatists. This is because they are Russian soldiers acting in an illegal war.

Second, the separatists have shot down an airplane using an advanced surface to air missile system that fires 6 meter long missile and cannot be fired by an untrained man on the street. It is a complex weapons system.

Third this was clearly a mistake by the men on the ground. The aircraft was flying over a war zone. So they shot it down.

If Russia admit blame, they admit to an illegal war perpetrated by Russian soldiers under order, posing as separatists and armed with russian advanced weapon systems that only russian soldiers could have in their control and be trained to use.

Not only do they admit to the mistake of shooting down an airliner of 257 innocent civilians but they also admit to the illegal annexing of Crimea and the instigation of civil war costing over 1000 innocent civilian lives in the Ukraine with the ultimate intent of reclaiming control of Ukraine.

In short, there is no ****ing way Russia will admit any blame for the shooting down of MH17 and therefore no reason to cancel an F1 race because of it.

Formula one isn't a soap box for politicians to stand on simply to advance their own idealism's and careers F1 goes there they race someone wins then they go to another country and race, no politics involved..

If anyone believes that any politician actually gives a stuff about that airplane or the people on it then they are deluded...

Mephistopheles - They stopped going there when Mandela became president, which suggests either Ecclestone is significantly more than 10 years behind, or Madiba was more than 10 years ahead of the silly sods who're still paying for this...

I think F1 should boycott the American GP

Ok Mephistopheles I see the point you're trying to make but if we excluded every country that had committed a war crime or government sponsored domestic troubles we wouldn't have a calendar at all.

Australia
Killed Japanese POW's during WWII

Bahrain
Already well documented incidents of recent civil unrest.

China
Chairman Mao. Enough said.

Spain
200,000 executions during the civil war.

Monaco
The principality is apparently a haven for War Criminals
http://www.rnw.nl/international-justice/article/opinion-monaco-a-haven…-war-criminals

Austria.
Hitler

Britain
Too many to list. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_war_crimes

Germany.
See Austria.

Hungary
Lots of crimes by people called Laszlo for some reason. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Hungarian_people_convicted_of_war_crimes

Belgium
The home of the war crimes tribunal isn't quite so innocent itself. They were instigated in the murder of the Congo leader Lumumba

Italy
Mussolini

Japan
Again too many to mention http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_war_crimes

Russia
No comment needed

USA
See post above.

Brazil
Well documented civil unrest including actual offences committed against an F1 team

So basically none of the major hosts are innocent and the only races that we can go to with a clear conscience are:
Canada, Singapore and Abu Dhabi.

Very true teabagyokel Most countries wouldn't be where they are today without committing some atrocities along the way. Is it possible to come up with a calendar that would be made up of entirely of ethical countries?
