Pirelli have revealed what tyres will be used in 2012. Super-soft (red), Soft (yellow), Medium (white), Hard (Silver), Intermediate (green) and Wet (blue). Apparantly Pirelli had to cater for the lack of EBDs as it affected the amount of downforce put on the tyres so now the tyres will have a squarer profile. Also the performance gaps between the tyres have been reduced compared to last year, the gap will be roughly 0.6-0.8 seconds unlike the 1.2-1.8 seconds seen in 2011.

That is what I hope tyres that are not too much different but also they don;t last 50 or 60 laps so Sauber will run a 1 stop strategy and become a mobile chicane

Cheers Bro - my friend just looked at me funny when I was watching that and said aloud "ahh I hope there will be less marbles this year"

This change will probably make the Scuderia happy, and enable the teams to get some use of the harder compound, and cut down the number of pitstops. :cheer:

According to Adam Cooper, Pirelli said the longest runs in Barcelona were 22 laps on the Hard, 20 on Medium, 24 on Soft, and 10 on Supersoft.

Strange how the Soft tyre lasted longer than both the Medium and Hard. However I suppose we don't know what laptimes they were doing at the latter end of those stints, they may have been trundling around. I'm hoping Pirelli are more willing to bring the softer compounds to the boring tracks like Catalunya, Yeongam and Buddh.

I still think they've not got the rules on tyres right. I kind of like the two compounds/race rule but I think it should be for the teams to chose the compounds used and not have it imposed. Why should a team that has a driver or car with specific characteristics not be able to capitalise on it? In order to keep costs down the teams should nominate in advance of the event which tyres they intend using.

I also hope as someone else has stated that the compound choices are not too conservative and last forever!

Lotus seem to think that the new compounds could mix up strategies this season.

Pirelli's aggressive choice of tyre compounds this year will open up the possibility of more varied strategies from teams, reckons Lotus trackside operations director Alan Permane.

With Pirelli's range of tyres being much closer together in performance this year, there is less chance of outfits all opting for the same tactics as happened on numerous occasions in 2011.

I'm not so sure it will shake things up that much but I'm sure well see a few good bad choices made in the heat of the moment.

According to a post on Twitter, the changes to the tyres this year are as follows:

Compared to the Super Soft:

This year
Soft - 10% harder
Medium - 25% harder
Hard - 31% harder

Last year
Soft - 25% harder
Hard - 70% harder

Any definition of "harder"?
