Pastor Maldonado

Courtesy of Planet F1 and Tranquility's post in the Belgian PQR thread here's a place to discuss the Williams' No.2

"Is Pastor Maldonado the scariest man in sport? His post-Spa interview was delivered with a stare that could put a weak-hearted man six foot under from a distance of ten yards and culminated in the remarkable, utterly-terrifying announcement that he regards Lewis Hamilton as "a really good friend."

Jeepers.

Just jeepers.

Fear and pray for his enemies."

Pastor started his racing career in Italy in the Formula Renault and F3000. He would have been Formula Renault 3.5 Champion if he hadn't been disqualified from a win at Misano in 2006. Moving on to GP2 Pastor raced for 4 seasons, eventually taking the title in 2010.

With not insubstantial financial backing from Venezuela's national petroleum company, PDVSA, he took Nico Hulkenberg's seat at Williams for 2011 winning his first point last weekend in Belgium.

On a personal level, he is a self proclaimed Socialist and a personal friend of controversial Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, which probably explains the backing from PDVSA.... Oh, and he's 26 and is still wearing braces on his teeth.

I was looking the pitwall camera on the second practise and noticed horrifying fact about our beloved Crashtor. His career overall points are 49 and he has started 82 races. Now how in the hell he is still driving? Surely a blind man can drive better than him?

i like maldonado but mainly for the entertainment he brings when in china he managed to outbrake himself on pit lane entry & nearly go behind the barrier was brilliant but call me supersitious but i feel its the number 13, thats is costing him he like a bad magnet for bad luck. & its not just him i remeber a few yrs ago in indycar fellow venezuelan EJ Viso had 13 in 09 retired from the 1st 7 races & only managed 1 top 10 for whole 17 races season

As the points are only there for a total of 12 months he was down to 4 before the race, though in theory he had penalties during the race which could attract points so he may end up with a race ban. His next lot of points drop off in November. Not seen any news on him getting points from yesterdays race though?

It is plainly ridiculous that he as a professional racing driver can accumulate so many penalties and they are for stupid things as well
- speeding in the pitlane
- illegally overtaking

on top of the repair bills , is the return on investment negative with him

Here's the complete list of penalty points (couldn't find a better thread where to post them)

Driver’s Penalty Points:

Grosjean – Lotus – 6pts
Maldonado – Lotus – 6pts
Ericsson – Caterham/Sauber – 5pts
Verstappen – Toro Rosso – 5pts
Perez – Force India – 4pts
Vettel – Ferrari – 3pts
Hulkenberg – Force India – 2pts
Button – McLaren – 2pts
Merhi – Manor – 2pts
Kvyat – Red Bull Racing – 2pts
Hamilton – Mercedes – 2pts

If Renault do buy the Enstone team expect Pastor to be given his marching orders. Grosjean will probably stay, what with him being French and all.

Pastor's cash replaced by Renault cash. If he can still bring money to the party I expect he'll find another drive. Force India?

Grosjean is pretend French as he is actually from Switzerland. Don't tell Renault though as I think he's a good driver.

Fenderman wrote a really great post about that over on the Grosjean thread - it appears to be an issue that quite a few drivers have. Grosjean has done a lot to address it but whether it is something that will hold him back from being a true top driver who knows. I don't think anyone doubts Grosjean has the speed but the racecraft needs work.
