Nico Hülkenberg

Never have I known so many people rate a test driver as a future world champion so I thought I'd start a thread for people to pass there opinions on young Nico.

Has an incredible record in other Formula's - won A1 Go in 06, won F3 euro masters in 08, won GP2 in 09 and then came into F1. There was a lot of hype around Mr Hulkenberg in arriving in F1 as he was seen as the next 'Lewis Hamilton' but in all honest in the car he was driving he was never going to be able to match what Lewis did as a rookie the question remains though did he do enough? He scored 25 points to his experienced team-mate Rubens Barrichello's 47 which doesn't look good - however is it unfair to judge a rookie against the most experienced F1 driver in history? Especially a driver who was having a resurgent after being a world championship contender the season before.

To be fair to Hulkenberg he got better as the season went on and it was clear he was getting to grips with F1 - the icing on the cake of course was the brilliant pole he scored in the wet in Brazil. Although tactical he was advised as when to go and on what tyres he still had to produce the time and being on pole by over a second is pretty impressive. I think if Williams could have afforded to keep him on they would have done but needs must when the bank manager drives and poor old Nico was shown the door.

Currently testing with Force India and you have to think that right now he's breathing down Sutil's neck for the race seat. I really hope they take a gamble on him earlier than later as want to see how he fares against Di Resta - I actually think that might be the making of both of them. Currently Di Resta is being praised and lined up for the Merc drive at the moment but you have to say if Hulkenberg comes in and beats him surely Merc would take the Nico option?

Is he as good as he's hyped or does having Will Weber as you manager help you become hyped up? Interestingly back in 2009, when he was being considered for replacing Luca Badoer at Ferrari, Weber stated that Hulkenberg would not take the seat now but he would sign for Ferrari in 3 years time - that makes 2012 - next season!

As mentioned on another thread there have been 2 world champions who have had a season of F1 and then dropped out to take a test driver role for another year - Mika Hakkinen and Fernando Alonso - will Nico make it a hattrick?

He took a gamble and it didn't pay off, I won't knock him for that. To place responsibility on someone else when they had no control over the situation is not on and I wonder if something is never your fault how you learn which is a concern.

Hulkenberg has been showing some promise for years and I believe he's proving his worth in F1. Given the machinery he will do extremely well and give some of the top lot a run for their money. Definitely one to watch.

After a bit of a back of the grid clear out this winter that unless Force India sign and old boy in the next few weeks that the Andre De Cessaris belt for most Grand Prix without winning one will be jointly held by Paul Di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg who both have 39 starts.

I think they jointly hold the pierluggi Martini belt for most races without a podium too.

Has more to do with the amount of rookies then anything else though, if you consider Jenson Button scored his first podium in the 70th race in his career and Mark Webber only won his 130th race.

Wasn't a criticism of either just fact. Like I said with the clear out of the likes of Glock, Kovi, Kobi, Senna etc and with Rosberg and Maldo winning last year it pushes it down the line.

Perez is only two races behind on the no win thing and then Grosjean is next in line before Ricciardo and Vergne. All the other none winners are Rooks.

Maybe this should be on the Sauber forum

How things change so quickly in F1

If Hulkenburg was still at Force India he would probably be neck and neck with Di Resta now

As discussed on the Sauber thread it appears that Sauber are awaiting the signing of a deal with a massive Russian gas company which should sort there cash flow problem.

However suppose the situation does continue and Sauber find they can't pay Hulkenberg and part company with him to bring in a paying driver to keep them afloat leaving the Hulk a free agent. Do we thing the boys at Enstone would be tempted to give Grosjean the old heave ho and do a deal with the Hulk to have him drive for the rest of the year?

Would let Nico show what he could do in a race winning car with Kimi as a yardstick and it might give the team a chance to view him as a replacement should Kimi leave.

I do feel sorry for the Hulk but that is F1 I'm afaid

No doubt at Force India he would be still competitive

He better hope there is a lifeline for him either at Ferrari or possibly a Mercedes powered car- there are 4 teams using Merc engines next year

Interesting for Hulk at Lotus - not a bad suggestion given he is young and fast and is not going to demand more than Raikkonen for his services

It would not be a bad team for him although they are bit more organised than Sauber so allows him to compete at the front

Hmmm. Lets face it The Hulk could go to Ferrari, Red Bull, Merc, The enstone based team or even back to Force India before next season. None of then would surprise me.

They have talked about him before. He certainly has the speed and the personality to fit the brand. Don't think he'd play ball with Seb though!
