Nico Hülkenberg

Never have I known so many people rate a test driver as a future world champion so I thought I'd start a thread for people to pass there opinions on young Nico.

Has an incredible record in other Formula's - won A1 Go in 06, won F3 euro masters in 08, won GP2 in 09 and then came into F1. There was a lot of hype around Mr Hulkenberg in arriving in F1 as he was seen as the next 'Lewis Hamilton' but in all honest in the car he was driving he was never going to be able to match what Lewis did as a rookie the question remains though did he do enough? He scored 25 points to his experienced team-mate Rubens Barrichello's 47 which doesn't look good - however is it unfair to judge a rookie against the most experienced F1 driver in history? Especially a driver who was having a resurgent after being a world championship contender the season before.

To be fair to Hulkenberg he got better as the season went on and it was clear he was getting to grips with F1 - the icing on the cake of course was the brilliant pole he scored in the wet in Brazil. Although tactical he was advised as when to go and on what tyres he still had to produce the time and being on pole by over a second is pretty impressive. I think if Williams could have afforded to keep him on they would have done but needs must when the bank manager drives and poor old Nico was shown the door.

Currently testing with Force India and you have to think that right now he's breathing down Sutil's neck for the race seat. I really hope they take a gamble on him earlier than later as want to see how he fares against Di Resta - I actually think that might be the making of both of them. Currently Di Resta is being praised and lined up for the Merc drive at the moment but you have to say if Hulkenberg comes in and beats him surely Merc would take the Nico option?

Is he as good as he's hyped or does having Will Weber as you manager help you become hyped up? Interestingly back in 2009, when he was being considered for replacing Luca Badoer at Ferrari, Weber stated that Hulkenberg would not take the seat now but he would sign for Ferrari in 3 years time - that makes 2012 - next season!

As mentioned on another thread there have been 2 world champions who have had a season of F1 and then dropped out to take a test driver role for another year - Mika Hakkinen and Fernando Alonso - will Nico make it a hattrick?

I think Nico is jumping ship quick sharp because VJ and Force India are going down the pan.

Plus I think this makes Nico Ferrari's official fall back driver.

http://www.sauberf1team.com/en/news...er_F1_Team_signs_on_Nico_Huelkenberg_for_2013 Hinwil, 31st October 2012 – Nico Hülkenberg has been confirmed as one of the two team drivers for the Sauber F1 Team in season 2013. The 25-year-old German won the GP2 Series in 2009, made his Formula One debut in 2010 with the WilliamsF1 Team and managed to capture a pole position in his maiden year. He is currently driving for Sahara Force India and ranks 12th in the Drivers’ World Championship with 49 points after 17 out of 20 races. Hülkenberg’s best Formula One race result this season was at the Belgian Grand Prix, where he finished fourth on the challenging Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

Very true but I would argue that Kimi is the only one that did it successfuly.

In fact it could be argued that only 3 sauber drivers have ever left for better things, Kimi, Massa and..........Heinz Harold Frentzen! The truth is out there!

Well my logic is that he's not done it successfully yet! And you know me I don't do rash predictions

(there are still enough GP left for Grosjean by the way)

Hulkenberg's take on him colliding with Hamilton yesterday is interesting to say the least.

"I think Lewis ran out of space with Heikki and was a bit irritated there. I obviously decided to make a move into Turn 1 and was on the damp side of the track and lost the rear a little bit. Unfortunately we collided.

"Looking at the incident I think it's just one of those things in racing. I think he could've turned away a bit. But the way it worked wasn't good for either of us."

Madness. hulk out braked himself thinking he would be able to take the normal overtaking line of blocking the outside line by coming across from the inside to the outside. This only works when there is not a car on the outside. Hamilton took the outside line behind Heikki with fine car control and no reason to panic. Hulk just ran out of talent, grip and braking area and consequently ran into Hamilton. It was a misjudgment on his part and to take the leader out of the race in the process is further justification for his penalty. Great drive from Hulk, otherwise, and I am sure he will cut out this sort of mistake if he gets a chance to get used to fighting at the sharp end of the competition. I put this one down to a lack of experience and if he wants to learn from it so should he.

I think he lost more than a little of the rear. If he hadn't used Lewis as a wall he was heading backwards into the barriers. Maybe he didn't realise because he just sort of bounced off Lewis and was suddenly going the right way again.

Yes, that was disappointing, but that is a wonderful 5 points finishes from the last 6 races of the season, only Raikkonen, Massa and Vettel have done better, and only Alonso has matched that!

He is definitely showing some promise and I'm watching him with keen interest. Just a shame that he wasn't able to retrospectively see that his car was in the process of swapping ends when it knocked the race leader out of contention.

He really does like Interlagos, doesn't he, though?
