Nico Hülkenberg

Never have I known so many people rate a test driver as a future world champion so I thought I'd start a thread for people to pass there opinions on young Nico.

Has an incredible record in other Formula's - won A1 Go in 06, won F3 euro masters in 08, won GP2 in 09 and then came into F1. There was a lot of hype around Mr Hulkenberg in arriving in F1 as he was seen as the next 'Lewis Hamilton' but in all honest in the car he was driving he was never going to be able to match what Lewis did as a rookie the question remains though did he do enough? He scored 25 points to his experienced team-mate Rubens Barrichello's 47 which doesn't look good - however is it unfair to judge a rookie against the most experienced F1 driver in history? Especially a driver who was having a resurgent after being a world championship contender the season before.

To be fair to Hulkenberg he got better as the season went on and it was clear he was getting to grips with F1 - the icing on the cake of course was the brilliant pole he scored in the wet in Brazil. Although tactical he was advised as when to go and on what tyres he still had to produce the time and being on pole by over a second is pretty impressive. I think if Williams could have afforded to keep him on they would have done but needs must when the bank manager drives and poor old Nico was shown the door.

Currently testing with Force India and you have to think that right now he's breathing down Sutil's neck for the race seat. I really hope they take a gamble on him earlier than later as want to see how he fares against Di Resta - I actually think that might be the making of both of them. Currently Di Resta is being praised and lined up for the Merc drive at the moment but you have to say if Hulkenberg comes in and beats him surely Merc would take the Nico option?

Is he as good as he's hyped or does having Will Weber as you manager help you become hyped up? Interestingly back in 2009, when he was being considered for replacing Luca Badoer at Ferrari, Weber stated that Hulkenberg would not take the seat now but he would sign for Ferrari in 3 years time - that makes 2012 - next season!

As mentioned on another thread there have been 2 world champions who have had a season of F1 and then dropped out to take a test driver role for another year - Mika Hakkinen and Fernando Alonso - will Nico make it a hattrick?

I asked that very same question on ask the apex's page 115 and pob answered it.

There had been some rumours last week that Alonso would do likewise and run at Le Mans as well as F1. Don't see it myself but that would certainly represent some sort of throwback to motorsport's past ways, and one that I'd personally welcome...

If I was Hulkenberg I would seriously consider what he needs to do next season to get the top F1 recognise his abilities which are being wasted at Force India

But where is there an opening for Hulkenberg?

Mercedes: already have two top class drivers contracted.
Red Bull: Hulkenberg is not one of their drivers and is now too old to become one, i.e. his age is in double figures.
Williams: similar to Mercedes except that the drivers are not quite as good; Hulkenberg isn't so good that either of the Williams drovers would have his contract broken.
Ferrari: why would anyone go there unless it was to avoid another beating from their team mate?
McLaren: could well be a frying pan/ fire situation. McLaren have one excellent driver and on OK driver they know.
Toro Rosso: see Red Bull.

There's always Force India, they may produce an unexpected winning car which would enhance their drivers reputations.

It just puzzles why Hulkenberg is being overlooked as he is better than a midfield driver . He was shafted out of Williams because Pastor bought in more money. I do wonder what he could have done with the Williams in 2012 instead of seeing Pastor crashing all the time

He did indeed beat Perez in the early part of the season (excluding Bahrain where Perez had Force India's only podium finish of the year) up to Canada. From then on they scored equally.

Incidentally Mclaren dropped Perez because he was not a good enough driver.

Better drivers than Nico Hulkenberg have been overlooked for top seats in F1 and worse drivers have got them. I suspect he will hang around the mid field teams for a few more season before going off to DTM. No point in getting vexed about it and you also have to question some of the decisions he has made, albeit probably because he couldn't get a driver elsewhere.

FB the Williams decision was not his fault. The Sauber decision actually enhanced his reputation although he did not get the Ferrari drive . The Force India return seems to have been vindicated seeing how Lotus his other choice was in all sorts of disarray

I am not sure how he will land a top team drive currently as he is not considered the top German driver at the moment and the next generation of young drivers have excelled this season

Come to think of it Porsche are part of VW Group it will be interesting to see if he wants to angle himself an opportunity with Audi should they come into F1

As i put on le mans thread Finally watched final 4hr of le mans 24 i had to miss while at work & i really chuffed for Nico Hulkenberg is a great talent in my option 2nd best German on grid slightly behind vettel on natural talent seen him excel in many different series A1GP F3 GP2 F1 le mans how a race winning team hasnt picked him up by know is beyond must be like Stevie Wonder to not take him & if he leaves F1 without even a podium Nevermind a win he will be biggest unfulfilled talent F1 had since Stirling moss

I thought he was managed by Willi Weber who use to be the Schumacher's manager and knows a thing or two about getting a good drive and money

It seems like Rosberg has nailed the Merc seat for another two seasons as he is unlikely to fall out so badly with the team they want to turf him out of the team

With Toto pretty pulling the strings with either Bottas or Pascal lined up potentially. I am afraid Hulkenberg has missed his opportunity there

Whilst at Mclaren they already have K Mag and Van Doorne lined up and it is unlikely he will get a seat at Ferrari now .. his options for a decent team seems to be fading even at his old team WIlliams seems to be a long shot

Really a great talent who never got the drives he deserved... how things would have been different if he had won the Brazilian GP in 2012 then rather than hitting Hamilton?
