It's less than a month to the release of Mass Effect 3 (March 6th). The Mass Effect series for those who are unfamiliar with it is a trilogy of science-fiction games revolving around Commander Shepard and their (Shepard can be male and female) mission to stop the Reapers from exterminating all life in the galaxy.

The Mass Effect series has become renowned for it's excellent mix of RPG and shooter elements. In particular the story of Mass Effect differs from many of it's rivals, because the story is up to you. The game allows you to change many variables with Shepard and their story. For example gender, ethnicity, appearance, background and general nature is left down to the player. Not only that but previous Mass Effect titles will affect the gamer's experience in future games because saved games are imported. How the player interacts with characters is also unique in gaming, there are different options when conversing with characters, you can be polite or you can force them tell what you want. The choice of being a Paragon (hero) or Renegade (results no matter the costs) is up to you. Romance is also another aspect of the game, there are several love interests during Sherpard's campaign, male, female and alien, but be careful because choosing one (or more) may have dire consequences.

Mass Effect 3 is the final installment in Shepard's story. It promises the conclusion of both the main storyline but also Shepards interactment with different characters. Whatever happens in the story, Mass Effect 3 is sure to be one of the games of 2012.

This is a fantastic series that I have followed since it first launched. I enjoyed this game because, as you said, it caters to my interest in shooters and RPGs alike. I don't like it when they shoe-horn you into making certain decisions that can have huge implications. On the whole this is a brilliant game. I'm looking forward to it.

Apparently a Bioware PR guy told people to hold onto their Mass Effect saved files, hinting that although Mass Effect 3 is the conclusion to Shepard's story it may not be the final game set in the Mass Effect universe.

The voice acting is also excellent in this game, in particular Martin Sheen, Seth Green, Yvonne Strahovski and Adam Baldwin are great and really add to the story.

I'm tempted to buy the Collector's Edition but it looks like in the UK that GAME has an exclusive deal or something because they're the only ones taking pre-orders on the CE and the're charging £70 when ME2's Collector's Edition was around £55. Not to mention I'm meant to be saving for the British GP this year...

If anyone's interested in trying this then they can now. The demo is out on Xbox LIVE at the moment(I think it's also on Origin and PSN but I'm not positive). So far there is a 45 minute mission and a multiplayer demo. The multiplayer is a survival mode, it shares some aspects of zombies in Call of Duty but is actually quite different and the AI is actually intelligent. Also whole movement of the player has improved vastly, they're are much more responsive now which really adds to the gameplay.

Overall if you're bored of current games give the demo a go, however I would say that the gameplay is only one piece of the Mass Effect series, it would be hard to comprehend why the series has such high ratings without playing the earlier releases and fully immersing yourself in the story.

I hope it's better than the second game.
The first games ruled story wise. The second game was more about getting your new crew and for me that was in a way disappointing.

Here's another trailer for the game, this time it's live action.

It emerged today that GAME and Gamestation (owned by the same company) could not meet credit requirements with EA (the publisher of the Mass Effect series) and therefore all games (including future releases) under the EA title have been pulled and will not be sold. The Collector's Edition of Mass Effect 3 was exclusively available to GAME and because of their poor customer service and expensive prices I held off, I'm glad I did because I ordered my Collector's Edition from Amazon today (for £65) saving £5 and delivery charge.

It has become apparent that there is 'day 1 DLC' for Mass Effect 3. This has created negativity towards BioWare (the game's developer) because it is seen as unethical to sell downloadable content on release day when it could have been included into the game, however they state it was developed after the game was sent for certification on Sony and Microsoft's consoles. However it if you get the Collector's or Digital Deluxe Edition the DLC is included.

In my first post I stated that the game was released on March 6th, this is true if you live in North America, Europe release is March 9th, Australia is March 8th and Japan is March 15th.

I've preordered the collectors edition. It's the only time I've ever done so with a new game. When I finished ME2 I literally said aloud "that's the all round best game I have ever played". To me it really was that good.

I haven't played the original since I'm a PS3 owner so I can't comment!
Regardless, one's enjoyment of a game depends on what type/style of game one has a penchant for, what what!!

Mass Effect 2 was my first ever Xbox 360 game, so other than it being naturally amazing it will always be a favourite of mine, I also have never ordered a collector's edition before but I felt compelled to with ME3.

I played the original and it was so boring I couldn't even be both......zzzzzzzz

Bro I don't know when you played the original but I tried playing it and I wasn't blown away either. However this was because I was playing it in 2011, 4 years after release when technology has moved on an awful lot. Yet I can still appreciate the brilliant story that was in the original.

Anyways I must get round to honing the perfect save file in preparation for March 9th, when I will not be seen outside the house for at least a week!

I have two full and complete save games. However on each one I lost a party member in the final battle. I think I even managed to get Miranda killed in my second run through so I guess I'll be using my first save game as the reference for ME3 as I lost Jack in that playthrough. I don't have the minimum 50+ hours to play again before the ME3 release to get a totally 'clean' runthrough! Is it even possible that you can have no casualties at all in ME2?

Yes it is. You must fully upgrade the Normandy for when you pass through the Omega 4 relay, because each upgrade will save a member of your squad. You must also choose the correct people for the different roles during the suicide mission and you must have completed their loyalty mission.

When a Technician is required choose Tali, Legion or Kasumi.

When a Fire-team leader is required choose Garrus, Jacob or Miranda.

When a Biotic specialist is required choose Jack or Samara/Morinth.

When a second Fire-team leader is required choose Garrus, Jacob or Miranda.

When an Escort for the Normandy's crew is required choose Mordin because he has the highest chance of dying otherwise.

In the final battle the team that is left to defend the doors has a greater chance for survival is you leave the strong squadmates such as Grunt, Zaeed and Garrus. Therefore take squadmates such as Mordin, Jack and Tali although this will make the final battle more difficult because these squadmates die more frequently.

Ah, I see. Ah well...I'll just live with having lost Jack then and use my first game save as the reference for ME3.

I played my collectors edition of this yesterday and have to say it's been absolutely brilliant so far. Engaging, exciting, heart wrenching, naughty and nice all in one. Best ££ I've spent on a game in a long time. If you're a fan of the series expect some surprises and tough decisions. Would it be Mass Effect if it didn't have!? A sublime game.

Mine came today while I was at college, now it's at the sorting office and it's closed :(. I'll have to get it tomorrow before college again.

Right after playing the game for 9 hours the day I got it I think it's safe to say I'm enjoying it. My save file that I wanted to use got corrupted so I had to use an alternate one but whatever. Anyway must get back to it, the Reapers won't stop themselves you know!

I'm getting a bit worried about the various endings. They're getting universally panned online by, well, everyone. There's even groups springing up demanding EA/Bioware change it. :dunno:

I've just started playing the first one :(
Indeed - I've had the first one for a few years, and although I've done the first few planets I just couldn't get enthused by it. Mind you, I'm likely to be off-work for a spell in the coming weeks, so I may end up starting it again - just to see what all the fuss was about...once I've finished all the Metal Gear Solid HD reissues :D !
