Current Fernando Alonso

Suprised there's no thread (although I had one for his blogs), so i'll start off:

A double world championship vs Raikkonen and then Schumacher in 2005 and 2006 respectively elevated Alonso's status but, apparently, no one told his rookie teammate at his brand new team of a theoretical 'pecking order' the following season ... and the Spaniard was 'seen off' by the young Englishman, Hamilton, into two years of Wilderness while both Hamilton and an even younger Vettel began to make their mark through '08 and '09.

Arguably, Alonso was in the Top 3 of all the Formula One 'Aces' in the 2000s following Hakkinen's retirement - up there with either Schumacher/Raikkonen and, then, Raikkonen/Hamilton - and remains so in the early 2010s along with Hamilton/Vettel...with only Kubica knocking on the door until the Pole's horrible Rallying accident.

A question mark initially over 2004 during which Trulli lead him in the standing until the Italian fell out with ex-manager and team boss Flavio Briatore (Alonso's then business manager) under dubious circumstances after the French Grand Prix.

Another question mark is...Who has progressed more since the end of 2007: Hamilton or Alonso?

A fan. Then came the unfortunate blackmail allegations against McLaren boss Ron Dennis on the morning of the 2007 Hungarian GP which came to light at the highly costly FIA 'Spy-Gate' hearings before Spa...followed by the odour of the deliberate crashing of the Number 2 Renault car at Singapore in 2008 which lead to Alonso finishing 1st in the event and ended in the banning of Briatore and Pat Symmonds a year later.

2009 was a poor year with 'Nando's' mind likely on the prospect of Santander paving the way to better prospects at Maranello one year earlier.

2010 was a fresh start at Ferrari (who no longer had Schumacher walking through the premises regularly) but first half season mistakes ultimately cost him a title inspite of being infamously aided by a Team Orders switch w Massa at Hockenheim (which lead to more world-wide criticism).

Relatively fast, relatively consistent but prone to mistakes and a possible insecurity complex (*) based on wanting sole focus from a team and being only happy with a Number 2 in the other car running behind him. Anything else and it seemingly rattles him.

(*) This is my own personal opinion.

..and so to 2011...

He's underperformed only at Malaysia (hit Hamilton) and China (invisible while Massa challenged McLarens and Red Bulls) and, arguably, Canada...but has maximized his chances in the other 6 races culminating in the British GP win.

He said in his post-Monaco blog that 'Silverstone would be the WDC cut-off'...and so, after some major upgrades, the Ferrari looks a winner again. It might be too late for 2011 given Vettel's finishing rate...but the 2012 regs means they should keep the hammer down at Maranello.

He's signed on through to 2016...So hopes are high of a WDC at some juncture...but not yet.

Well I would feel mortified Jen, but I think it's Alonso who is doing the shilly shallying. He's going to make mega bucks wherever he goes.

I know and, also, suspect that he really doesn't need to make any more money.

One of his greatest enjoyments now comes from keeping the buggers guessing.

Fernando Alonso is on the verge of sealing a deal to join McLaren.

The two-time champion, who is to leave Ferrari two years before the end of his contract, had been deciding between McLaren and taking a year off.

But a deal for Alonso to return to the team he left after one acrimonious season in 2007 is now all but done.

Within McLaren the internal debate has switched to whether to retain Jenson Button or Kevin Magnussen alongside him - the Dane is emerging as favourite.

Negotiations between Alonso and McLaren over the fine detail of his new contract are not completely finalised but insiders say they have gone so far that it would now be a major shock if the 33-year-old did not sign.

They reported on Sky that he had met with the senior management of Honda at the Japanese GP so I can imagine that they are pushing to get Fernando into the car.

Well I for one will be glad to see Alonso on the grid. He was hugely entertaining to watch in yesterdays Grand Prix, his overtaking battles were a large part of stopping the race from being totally dull.
I wonder what he will be able to do with a Honda McLaren, and with a moody Ron Dennis.

I will start by saying I Like JB, he was my hero at one time, but he doesn't have what it takes anymore. Yes I know he has a crap car, but he verges on being Raikkonen the second. He's a Journeyman.

Youch! a bit harsh, he did manage something that no-one else has, including Alonso.

Not saying he is the best, but he is far better than the majority on the grid at the moment, and I certainly believe him to better than the current incarnation of Raikkonen.

The Pits that's what happens when you stop being a hero, the rose tinted light fades, and the sad fanboy (girl) in this case, see's all the cracks.
Yes, it probably was a bit harsh, and in truth, I would rather he stayed than KMag. But he still isn't the driver I thought he was.
:)
I can be quite fickle though, I'm sure he'd be back in my favour if he did some racing.

Not being at the front does not mean not racing Titch.

Dont get me wrong, I think Alonso would be the better choice for McLaren, and kmag is a strong prospect for the future, but virgin has outscored Kevin strongly this season, and I think He is not yet at the point where he does not still have a lot to offer. Maybe not the best, but by no means the worst.

Anyhow, Sorry to derail, hopefully all will be revealed soon!

The question is, what sort of frying pan is Alonso leaving the Ferrari fire for? Looking at this season, McLaren is the third best Mercedes runner. Only ahead of Force India on podiums thanks to Ricciardo's disqualification in Australia and on points in total, thanks mainly to Jenson Button. That means in terms of chassis development they are a long way behind the curve and without the Merc engine who knows where they would be running. Couple that to the fact that Honda will have to be quick out of the box to challenge the front runners and it looks like a lot of ducks will have to align in order for Alonso to be on it from day one.

I just can't get even remotely excited about Alonso in a McLaren, even if they pair him with Jenson (which they should, frankly). There- I've said it! I feel slightly less despondent now...:nah:

Sorry, my phone is used by the kids, and they do some funny stuff with the settings, it spell checked button to virgin for some reason.

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/116593 Kimi said he can't pinpoint the problem with the Ferrari and that Alonso is not bothered by the handling of the car. Maybe Kimi is a better representative of the performance of the Ferrari than Alonso because Alonso has a superhuman ability to drive around a cars problems? If this is the case (bear with me, I'll make a point soon) maybe Alonso would be that much faster in the McLaren than he is in the Ferrari? Button has double the points as Kimi but what if Button and Kimi have similar abilities? That would mean that Alonso in the McLaren could have a lot more points than he currently has. Maybe I should move this to the "I'm drunk and here is my idea" thread?
