I'm not sure if it's just coincidence but there's an increase in the fastest lap time from 1971 to 1972 of 12.5 seconds for Monza and 17.8 seconds for Monaco.

Did anything occur between these 2 years which would account for the significant increase?
Or were they both wet races perhaps?

Again, Monza has been far from unchanged down the years.

1955: Curva Vialone replaced by Parabolica (shorter lap and faster corner)

1955, 1956, 1960, 1961: Grands Prix were held on the combined road/oval course, dramatically increasing the length of the lap.

1972: Chicane added on the main straight and at Ascari.

1974: Ascari Chicane opened out.

1976: Rettifilio double chicane replaces the chicane on the main straight; Roggia chicane added.

1994: Second Lesmo corner tightened.

1995: Roggia chicane and Lesmo corners reprofiled for greater runoff.

2000: Rettifilio replaced by current very tight right-left chicane

These graphs briliantly illustrate the effects of rule changes and car development in F1. Isn't it interesting how the profile of the Monza fastest laps is almost identical to the profile of the overtaking graph from 1983 onwards.

Again, thanks for the list of changes, GM.
I'll make a note of the link for the next circuit I do.

I was aware of the 4 races held on the combined road/oval course which accounts for the significantly longer lap time.

So the 2 chicanes added in 1972 account for the large increase in lap time of 12.5 seconds from 1971.

Same goes for 1975 to 1976.

I was thinking exactly the same thing c_a_t.

I'll do an overlay at some point so we can see just how close they are.

Monaco 1972 was very wet - Jean-Pierre Beltoise won his only GP.

That explains it then, thanks Brian.

It's quite addictive this stat's stuff :D
