Grand Prix 2022 Italian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

The French may have invented motor racing, the British held the first World Championship Grand Prix, but the Italians give the sport its heart. This weekend the F1 circus visits Monza, a circuit affectionately referred to as the Temple of Speed, and with good reason. In 2020 Lewis Hamilton took pole at Monza with an average speed of 264.362 kph, or 164.267 mph, and Lewis claimed he could probably have gone quicker. If you would like to enjoy watching this lap again just click on the video below, it doesn't take long, and you will notice that it was only in the middle sector that Lewis set the fastest sector time!


Monza is the home of the fastest F1 race. In 2003 Michael Schumacher averaged 247.585 kph, 153.842 mph, which included a pit stop on lap 15.

In 2005 Juan Pablo Montoya peddled his Williams up to 372.6 kph, 231.523 mph. To put this in to a context which you can visualise, that is 103 metres per second. So if JPM were racing Usain Bolt, Bolt would have covered about 10 metres when the Williams crossed the finish line.

There is only one team to support in Italy, and that is Ferrari. There may be other companies who make racing cars in Italy, but there is only one which reaches in to the very soul of what it is to be an Italian motor racing fan. It doesn't matter who is driving their beloved red cars, the Tifosi (which literally translates as "fans") they will arrive in their red shirts, they will cheer the cars round every lap, and more often than not they will go home disappointed. Ferrari have won 20 times at Monza in the World Championhips era, in the last 20 years they have only won 6 times.

Monza has also given us some odd winners. In 2008 Sebastian Vettel won his first Grand Prix driving for Toro Rosso. Pierre Gasly also took his first race win at Monza in the Alpha Tauri in 2020. For those who know their F1 history, both these teams can trace their lineage back to Minardi who are based in Faenza. For the Italian fans, even though this team is also based in Italy, them winning the race is still a disappointment as they are, very simply, not Ferrari.

To find the last Italian driver to win in Italy, you have to go back to 1966. Ludovico Scarfiotti won the race in a Ferrari. But Ferrari has never been wedded to the idea that it needs to have Italian drivers, rather they want to have the fastest drivers in their car. Ferrari has won the World Drivers Championship 15 times, but the only Italian to win the World Championship in a Ferrari is Alberto Ascari, way back in 1952 and 1953.

Last year we had what will probably be the last ever win for Daniel Ricciardo, driving for McLaren. It will be interesting to see where Ricciardo ends up next season given Oscar Piastri will be taking his seat for 2023. The 2021 race is probably more famous for the incident at the first chicane between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, where the Mercedes ended up underneath the Red Bull with the halo saving Hamilton from what could have been a far more serious injury.

What can we look forward to this year? I'm going to stick my neck out here and suggest that Max Verstappen will take pole, will probably lead every lap and take the fastest race lap as well. Come on Ferrari and Mercedes, prove me wrong!

it fairness whereas i did agree. longer version it was an entertaining story about queen surprising horner & saying what is wrong with your drivers. post multi 21
 
The application of penalties is bizarre. The Haas cars qualified 19th and 20th. yes, they can’t go any further back on the grid, but Magnussen had a 10 place penalty, Schumacher a 5-place penalty, but somehow, Magnussen starts ahead of Schumacher. Something doesn’t make sense there.
 
GR has been having a charmed season in that he has consistently been gifted by lucky circumstances that have nothing to do with actual on-track racing. He has often been benefitted by safety car periods (notably over his teammate, as again happened at Zandvoort). And now all but one of his main competition (namely CL) have received penalties, thus leaving him with a good chance for the win. Despite qualifying 6th behind Lewis, he finds himself starting on the front row due to all the penalties. And the penalties on all but one of those main competitors are so severe that, barring something miraculous, they’ll be starting too far back in the field to be able to compete with GR for the win. Max has only been pushed back to 7th so one would expect that with the speed (especially on a straight line, which is critical for overtaking at Monza) of the RB he’ll be competing for the win, providing he doesn’t get tripped up (as especially can happen at the first chicane). CL’s Ferrari is faster than GR’s Merc but it goes through its tires quicker than the Merc and there’s always the chance that Ferrari will self-destruct with another of its disastrous strategy calls. Of course, if there are safety car periods this could allow some of the severely penalized drivers to join the fight at the front with GR. Most expect that CL or Max will win though the way that GR’s rabbit’s foot has been working its magic it wouldn’t be that surprising to see both of them hit trouble, opening the door for GR to come away with the win. Will his good fortune continue in the race?

And if I've said it once I've said it a hundred times, this is why penalties should be applied before qualifying and not after. That way at the end of Q1 we already know the first 5 out based on penalties alone. It would be qualifying time minus grid drop. Easy.

I know I go on and on about this but for the life of me I can't work out why the are applied after.

Even such madness as interviewing Verstappen and Sainz after qualifying knowing full well they hadn't actually qualified 2nd or 3rd.
 
I know this has been suggested before, but if all the teams believe the budget cap and the engine restrictions are excessive why don't they agree for all the drivers to take a new PU and gearbox at the same race so it cancels out any grid penalties. But then, of course, it would mean all the teams acting in the best interest of the sport, and we know they are incapable of doing this.
 
I would imagine Latifi's management are thinking along exactly the same lines.
yeah yesterday was the final nail in coffin of his 2023 chances because it looks like its a shootout between de vries or sergeant

FB its typical F1 isnt it, if not all teams basically say that they know they start the season they wont make it on 3 so they budget for 5 power units a season as they expected to use 4 & 1 to blow up. so these 3 rules are pointless but the teams as always dont help themselves as problem is that as Karun chandhok has said you give them 4 they'll want 5 you give them 5 they'll want 6

Wombat is Russell leading a charmed life or is it that he makes great decisions in the car. in same way Button winning many races in wet & changeable conditions wasnt lucky. you cant blame russell for taking advantage for Ferrari incompetence
 
The race is going to end behind the safety car, but only because of the incompetence of the stewards. The car needed to come out to pick up Verstappen, and then slow the pace right down.
 
I’m not sure why they’re banging on about red flagging the race. The two problems were
1. SC didn’t pick up the race leader which wasted laps
2. They were far too slow moving Ricciardo’s car, we all saw it look less than half a lap to do so.

Otherwise there is no problem finishing behind a safety car, in this case it wasn’t necessary.
 
I'm very confused, I though as soon as the leaders were behind the safety car, those in between them were let through and we then went "motor racing".

Is it the race director's responsibility to tell the SC when to go out? A bad end to a not particularly interesting race, but the fastest driver in the fastest car won again, which is what we have come to expect. It really is up to the other teams to raise their game and challenge the Red Bull car, there are plenty of other drivers equally as talented as Max, perhaps event better than him.
 
Nyck De Vries deserves a big round of applause for that performance. Great driving

Hamilton's double overtake on Norris and Gasly was great to watch.

Other than that, the Red Bull is so quick with Verstappen its unbeatable.
