Grand Prix 2018 Russian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

23rd February 2014.

The Russian team marches into the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi, having equalled the Soviet Union's record of 13 gold medals at a single Winter Olympic Games, top of the medal table. The organisers even found the time to self-deprecate the technical failure at the Opening Ceremony when one of the Olympic rings did not open.

Four years later, Russia would officially be banned from the Winter Olympics. Its tally of golds is down to eleven.

7th July 2018

Igor Akinfeev is captain of Russia's national football team, who have got much further than anyone expected in the World Cup. He is facing up to a penalty from Ivan Rakitic of Croatia and Barcelona at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi. If Rakitic scores, Croatia will face England in a semi-final in Moscow. Otherwise, Russia still have a chance.

This time, even as Akinfeev dives the wrong way, Russia have made friends in defeat.

So Sochi has hosted two events guaranteed to make your city (and surely thus your country) a sporting centre of the world - the Olympics and the World Cup. And the third item on that list...

Vladimir Putin is, in many ways, a show-off. It is important to him to show that he is a strong man, and by extension that the nation that he most certainly rules is a strong nation. And what do those internationally recognised strong nations do? They host events. Which are the most visible events? Sporting ones.

The Soviet Union hosted the Olympics, of course, in 1980. The Olympics were, until the fall of Eastern Communism, amateur. However, the World Cup was just too professional for the USSR to host, and Formula One was thus right out. A sport for the wealthy, requiring sponsors and capital? Where one of the drivers would eventually become the 7th Earl of Bute?

Putin's Russia has no such inhibitions. It is entirely comfortable with certain people making huge sums of money, particularly those who would support the government. It is entirely comfortable with Mercedes, Ferrari and Rolex turning up, for it is comfortable with the people who'd buy those products. Whether Putin has Red Bull for breakfast is unknown, however.

It does seem that he doesn't actually want to watch any sport he's holding. Is this why he tends to turn up with 20 laps remaining, or is that so the cameras get a chance to linger as he presses the flesh and enters the main stand? He was there for the opener and the final of the World Cup only, and one would have thought he'd have brought an umbrella for the presidents of France and Croatia during the trophy presentation. He probably thought the fact that only was dry made him seem the most important. In fact, it simply looked like Macron and Grabar-Kitarovic actually wanted to be there.

So, Sochi. Is it worth visiting? Well, the Wikipedia page does not state the height of the spire of St. Michael's Cathedral but it has certainly been worth a visit for the Mercedes drivers over the four years it has held a Grand Prix. They are yet to lose, although Sebastian Vettel was on pole position last year. It would be ironic if this was the race at which Ferrari regained composure.

Has this Grand Prix contributed to the image of Russia as a legitimate player? I suspect your answer will be decided by whose news you're watching.

Would have had some sympathy for Bottas if this was at the beginning of the season, but as he was 110 points behind at the start of the race then he can have no complaints about being told to let his championship leader teammate through. Also it would have being a different story if Hamilton had not pulled off that overtaking move on Vettel then it could of been a win for Bottas.

I expect Bottas will win because Hamilton will slightly go off the boil and yeah Abu Dhabi was the worst race I saw because no one could pass because of the aerodynamics last year so this year's race will be more of drab

Bottas can thank Toto for getting him the Merc drive because now Toto is forced to consider promoting Ocon seriously

If Fangio broke down he'd get out of the car and climb into his teammates. Team orders have been going on for decades. We all know it. The FIA tried to stop it and that turned into a farce.

There's no point getting outraged about it. As has been pointed out, if Bottas was a match for Hamilton and still in with a shout of the title himself, there would have been no team orders. Hamilton and Rosberg were left to race.

I'm sorry that Lewis didn't return position to Bottas.
I think that tis action could be more usefull than 4 addition points.
And may be Lewis are thinking so too now

By the way, congratulation with steady victory british driver Russell in the second Formula 2 race
in the support race at the Russian Grand Prix

Not as terribly dull as we thought it was going to be.

Some great wheel to wheel action. Vettel not punished for his double move which I agree with and at least shows that Vettel is not so unfairly treated.

Shame about the team orders but it makes sense from a logical and championship perspective. Too much drama about it all, imo!

Therefore Bottas needs to make sure he tows the line for now as he has two Mercedes young guns after his seat at the moment

Although I read that Wehrlein severing his ties with Mercedes might have been a good thing for him considering Toro Rosso are still non committal about Hartley getting the 2nd seat

Alexander Albon is now ahead of Lando Norris in the standings , pity no F1 team was considering taking a chance with him

team orders have always been a part of F1 and I can understand that. My problem with today's race is that teams orders today were totally unnecessary, Hamilton would have finished ahead of Vettel anyway, and he might even have won on his own merit. IMHO Mercedes actions were silly because they were supremely unfair to Bottas as well as to Hamilton (they made him look really bad), I know they don't care about the fans and I can understand that. What I personally don't like is when a car slows down another car, IMHO what Bottas did when Hamilton pitted wasn't great.

Having said all that when Ferrari did something similar in Austria 2002 everyone was incensed and rightly so, it's sad to notice that over time so many fans have come to accept some not very sporty behaviors.

How is giving team orders cheating given it is not illegal?

giving team orders is perfectly legal, and since we're talking about the past let's not forget that the orders were perfectly legal also in 2002 when Jean Todt went on the radio to ask Barrichello to let Schumacher through (Ferrari was punished for bringing the sport into disrepute for what happened on the podium).

IMHO Austria 2002 and today have one thing in common: team orders were totally unnecessary in both cases, MS would have won the 2002 WDC anyway, and the same applies to Hamilton this season, so why their respective teams decided to tarnish what both drivers had/have achieved for no sensible reason? :disappointed:

It seem with some, it's cheating when it involves Lewis and Mercedes, but with Vettel and Ferrari, that question is never asked with such intensity

really? I thought that it was the other way round if you consider what happened when Ferrari told Barrichello to let MS through in Austria 2002, I'm surprised that you make such a claim

The subtle difference is that this season is a whole lot closer than 2002 was, and there's still a chance of the Merc engine eating itself in the last few races as they're getting rather long in the tooth now.

Nobody likes to see team orders & it empty feeling to see it. Bottas deserved to win the race

But if im being ruthless. Lewis earnt the right to have no1 status over the season, ok bottas has had bit of bad luck but he hasnt been good enough over the season 120pts behind, 8 wins & 7 poles compared to 0 wins & 2 poles. Look at singapore Hamilton won bottas 4th 51 secs behind. With all the performance difference to verstappen he only got 31pts to show for it. So its a no brainer if lewis lost title by 7 points highly unlikely almost impossible i know, mercedes would be pelted. If bottas doesnt want team orders then compete for the title. simple
