Grand Prix 2014 Spanish Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Hola amigos!!

The F1 circus rolls into not-in Barcelona for the 2014 Spanish Grand Prix, the fifth round of the championship. As it is the start of the European season, this Grand Prix is usually the scene of technical updates from all teams, or last-minute bits and bobs to hopefully reverse the awful job the engineers did at the start of the season, depending on your cynicism. Now, all teams say that they can get half-a-second per lap, so the field theoretically shouldn't change order, but inevitably this is never the case. So, it will be interesting to see which teams have been overly-optimistic. I mean, there's one thing talking the talk, but can they walk the walk (or in this case just go really fast).

Often hailed as a 'complete' circuit which tests all aspects of the cars - i.e. a byword for producing awful races - the circuit often used to hold pre-season tests, so teams had a reasonable ides of what to expect, but some guy in the FIA decided that it does rain in Spain, and it doesn't necessarily fall mainly on the plain. So the tests were shoved off to the Middle East, and the teams only now have an almost-certain ides of what to expect. Something to point out, though, it is often said by some people that those cars who are good in the (unfortunately) tight last sector should be good at Monaco.

In terms of classic races, er, well I suppose 2011 wasn't bad, nor '91 and '92. Oh, and of course everyone's favourite safety ambassador won in 2012.

Usually it's bone dry here, with the last wet race in 1996, and thus is inevitably more boring and predictable than usual. Stick a hairpin at the end of the main straight!!! But I suppose it'll be good to see a dry quali for once!!

Ready....Steady....Discuss!!

Are we all expecting a good result for Williams this race given they posted the fastest time in testing around here? I am. I hope they can slay some giants. Don't know if they can get a podium though.

On the basis that they are unlikely to heed our calls for a circuit revamp, I'll settle for a Merc win with Hamilton taking over the lead in the WDC, and a podium for Felipe Massa. Perhaps, if he were to find himself catching his former team-mate at some point, he could get his new team to send a radio message to his old one, 'FELIPE.I.F.T.Y. do you understand?'

My anticipation of some good team-mate battles this season is starting to play out quite well:
Will Rosberg be able to stop the rot and prevent a four-win streak by Hamilton?
Can Vettel start his fightback at Barcelona against the young pretender Ricciardo?
Who will get the radio message from Williams this time, Massa or Bottas?
Will the Hulk or Chico come out on top at Force India?
Can Magnusson re-find his Aussie form and with it re-ignite his challenge to Button?
Can Maldo... no, that one's just too far-fetched.

This race must go, even though Valencia was so poor, it produced more action in it's last race than this one has since it joined the calendar.

Or anywhere in Spain, maybe put Portugal back on the calender Estoril has that Bulls head shape they seem to like in that part of the world and is a superior track in my opinion..

Edit

The Portuguese Grand prix was last run in 1996 Damon got pole but JV won with Damon second and a certain Mr Schumacher third, and it was in the running for a comeback in 2013.

It was a great win in 2012 for Pastor and I was really happy for Williams. Really really happy for Williams.
It also showed that Pastor can drive a solid sensible race when he wants to. It also gave some of us hope he was growing up.

Unfortunately it was very much the exception and he continues to drive like a dick 99% of the time.
After 4 seasons now you have to say he won't change now. He needs kicked out of F1.
