Grand Prix 2013 Japanese Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Korea almost provided an exciting race, helped with a liberal sprinkling of safety cars, but nothing could stop Vettel scampering off into the lead which he only lost for a few laps during the obligatory pit stops. Japan, at the traditional and technically demanding Suzuka circuit, is up next and last year Vettel took the Grand Chelem so I suspect the race winner, mechanical problems aside, is almost pre-determined.

The real race then looks to be for second. Lotus managed two on the podium in Korea with Romain Grosjean being a bit unhappy on the 3rd step. Mercedes flattered to deceive in qualifying, as they have done so many times this season, and struggled in the race with more tyre issues. Fernando Alonso has to have a good result to keep his wafer thin Drivers Championship chances alive.

Sauber performed well at Suzuka last year and after 4th in Korea Nico Hulkenberg will be looking to keep himself in the shop window for a better drive in 2014. Behind this lot there is not much going on. McLaren will qualify badly and then do better in the race. Will Paul di Resta manage a 5th consecutive dnf? Who will Adrian Sutil run into this weekend? I'm sure both Toro Rosso drivers will have different motivations; Ricciardo to prove Red Bull made the right choice promoting him to the senior team, Vergne to show they made the wrong decision.

I'd love to see Williams do well this weekend but somehow don't think they will. Caterham and Marussia must be hoping for a wet race to stand any chance of getting close to some points, we'll have to wait and see if their luck is in. Have I forgotten anyone? Oh yes, Felipe Massa. He was second last year but there is about as much chance of that happening again as I have of making the British Ladies Olympic Netball Team - go on Felipe prove me wrong and I'll go for the try-outs!

Strange fire in the sauber garage in Q1. Put out quick but must of damaged EG's car.

edit. and now JEV's car is on fire on track. Red flag. What on earth is going on.

Mark on pole. Out qualified Seb fair and square. Just to wait and see if Mark gets a grid place drop for a trivial reason now.

Number 2's doing well

Webber ahead of Seb
Massa ahead of Alonso
Grosjean ahead of Kimi
Rosberg ahead of Lewis

The Sky team saying Webber was running less rear wing and the set up appears to have worked. It would be good to see Webber win a race fair and square in his last season.

Comentary said they had KERS failure for the first lap but fixed it for Sebs second lap.
EDIT: C.H. just said no KERS for both laps which says it all. Mercs can't even beat a RB with no KERS. Race over.

[health and safety mode on] I was quite surprised to see team members not in fireproof suits all running towards the car on fire while the (refuelling?) guy in the fireproof suit was putting the fire out as is his job. I see they were rushing to save some of the removable parts but it did seem a little on the risky side.

Well if the team tell Webber to move over to let Vettel past, I can imagine the response they will get! So I suppose a spot of sabotage , such as a sloooooooow pit stop, might be on the cards.

Red Bull used to take Pole Position while being the slowest through the Speed Trap. Now they take Pole while being quickest through the Trap. Scary stuff.

And Titch, I would be pretty surprised to see Mark in P1 even after the first corner.

... oh dear, does that mean the Ferrari's trying to lap him will be mistaken for Caterham's and fought off thereby destroying 'Nando's last chance to prevent yet another WDC crowning at Suzuka event?

Webber has said he won't aid Vettel in his title charge ..why should Vettel take any unneccessary risks when Alonso is back in 8th place anyway

If Webber makes his poor start then Vettel will profit again unless Mark immediately sweeps to the inside just as long as he does not force Seb to the wall

I don't envisage Vettel trying to do a Senna go for a gap that was not there because why do I get the impression that could happen because Webber won't get a chance to win many more races after this and he'll fight hard

It maybe good for Vettel to show what happens when he has to chase for a win and not disappear into the distance

I think Hamilton and Grosjean could pose problems in the race if they keep up

Alonso - needs a miracle I'm afraid because he has a mountain to climb

Mephistopheles Do you think Webber is really gonna to say Seb payback time and squeeze onto the grass ... I remember Button was not happy with Vettel forcing him onto the grass in 2011 and Seb's response was to mention Alonso did the same thing to him which is double standards

To be honest I don't think Webber gives a shit about the team or Vettel I'm not sure he will deliberately run him off the road but he definitely won't give him any quarter I think it is Vettel who should be cautious tomorrow at the start.....
