Grand Prix 2012 European Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Valencia........ :bored:

Even Abu Dhabi and Bahrain are more exciting in comparison. Valencia is the only grand prix on the calendar that I genuinley do not look forward to. It's dull, boring and hasn't provided an interesting race at all since its inception on the F1 calendar in 2008. Thankfully it won't be a regular feature in the future as it will be alternating with Barcelona in the future.

Going into the Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton is back as the Championship leader after becoming the 7th driver to win in 7 races with victory in the Canadian Grand Prix. After missing out on the podium in recent races he was back with vengeance after fighting back from starting second and being third with 10 laps to go but thanks to fresher tyres he made easy work of Vettel and Alonso in the latter laps who fell away after a gamble to one stop failed. In the end Roman Grosjean and Sergio Perez finished on the podium and it is testament to the unpredictably of 2012 that it wasn't the first time either of them have been on the podium this season.

From race to race no team has been consistently at the very front, in Spain it was Williams, in Monaco it was Red Bull and in Canada it was McLaren. Both Ferrari and Lotus have probably been the most consistent package over recent weeks but not enough to win races with podium places the highest they can manage, but considering the start to the season Ferrari made, that probably isn't a bad thing and Alonso is only 2 points off the championship leader with world champion Vettel just one point behind in third.

It's a complete reversal of 2011 as this time last year Hamilton left Canada with a world of problems after a DNF which involved a collision with team mate Button who went on to win one of the best races of his career passing Vettel on the last lap. But 12 months later Hamilton won the race with Button finishing a lapped 16th. What's worse for the 2009 champion is that was on merit as well and not down to any car failures or pit problems, it marks a horrid fall from grace after winning the opening race in Melbourne and an early run of podiums but now he is struggling to even get into Q3 and convert that into points finishes. Button appears clueless as to where the problem lies and it may not be a short term fix as the car isn't slow as Hamilton is currently proving. It could be already over as far as Button's title hopes are concerned as he is currently 43 points behind Hamilton and has roughly half the points total.

It is also interesting to note that Button was further behind the leader last season and he was second in the championship, while at the moment he lies in 8th behind both Lotus drivers who are the only front running drivers yet to win a race (excluding Schumacher) and having come close in Bahrain and Spain they will want to be the next winners and take the total to 8 winners in 8 races and with both Raikkonen and Grosjean closely matched it's hard to say who is the more likely. But it's Grosjean's form which is the most surprising, a lot of people questioned why he was given the driver role given the way he was outperformed in 2009 and a lot of people said he would be outraced by the returning Finn, but after 7 races he is only 2 points behind and that is despite several first lap incidents where he has been the innocent part in some cases but not others (Malaysia). With the pendulum swinging from race to race it is hard to predict who will have the upper hand in the Spanish heat.

Gotta admit that Force India need to covert both of their top 10 positions into points this weekend. They need to get themselves on par with Williams as i think Sauber are just that little bit outta sight.

Am mightly relived that Hamilton avoid another penailty and will start in his rightful place. Looking forward to seeing Hamilton and Vettel going at it hammer and tong into turn 2.

Also top performance from Maldonado today.

This might not be a classic race coming up tomorrow, but i'll be watching it as knowing my luck i'll decide against watching it and it'll end up been a cracking race.

Have to say as regards qualifying today Heikki Kovalainen today showed what a good driver he is by finishing ahead on merit of the Torro Rosso's. Was surprised that the Ferrari's never made it into Q3 but with the field so tight a few 10ths here and there make all the difference at the moment. Hoping for an exciting race tomorrow at the front between Lewis, Sebastian, Kimi, Romain, and Pastor, who knows we may have 8 from 8 by this time tomorrow.

I am still amazed that over such a long lap, there was so little margin between the idrivers. Also, there were only a couple able to better the q2 time in q3, maybe something to do with the temperatures. The optimist in me thinks that this could lead to an interesting race. However, as stated on my avatar, that is quickly snuffed out.

A couple of things I am looking forward to though. Can Heikki maintain a strong showing in the race, and better his current best placing? Will we have another new winner? and the front runners look to be close, and will all keep each other honest, so who knows. I am going to be pint half full on this one I think!!

Why not lodge a complain? You saw how close Rosberg was to Hamilton and how close Maldonado was to Rosberg, it effectively cost Rosberg a flying lap.

I don't know the full story as I'm not a steward, but I would have conplained aswell, I've seen worse penalties for blocking a car in qualifying given before.

Well Mercedes have the absolute right to lodge a complaint/protest and to be honest they would not be doing their job properly if they had not done so, it is within a teams remit to make sure that they try and gain any advantage that they can, also they probably do feel that Rosberg was hindered it is also possible that despite the stewards decision he was.

Is it just because the complaint was made against Lewis that it leaves a sour taste or do you not agree with the complaints/protest procedure as it stands in F1 in general?

I don't see how it could be blocking in all honesty.

They were both on out laps, and the incident happened at the final corner. There is no way Hamilton was going especially slow around the final corner on his out lap. If he was, he would have compromised his flying lap - which he obviously didn't

Whether it was or whether it wasn't doesn't concern me although I did kind of question it in my mind when I saw it live, actually at the time I thought that it was the McLaren behind the Merc (Both being silver.) and I sort of muttered to myself Lewis is going to lose out on his flying lap here! The fact is at the end of day Mercedes had the right to protest ..

As I said it was six of one and a half a dozen of the other, with Maldonado possibly suffering the bigger penalty. Right to lodge a complaint and reasonable cause for complaint are not synonymous. I'm sure in the future Mercedes will look at the data and the bigger picture before running to the stewards. This is akin to diving under the slightest of touches to get the opposition booked. As it turned out, Rosberg was actually guilty of setting a slower sector time than Hamilton in a previous lap.

Dash it all, Dario Resta, I missed that, had to go out. Saw yesterday's crashfest though; hope the GP isn't like that one.

Felt really sorry for Calado yesterday, but at least he salvaged reverse-grid pole for today with the aid of Valsecchi's penalty. No idea yet how he did, as the sprint race must have only just finished and I can't find the result anywhere.

Maybe Marussia should have brought in a reserve driver yesterday. I know they didn't have one, or at least not one with a super licence (which is odd), but a deal like the one between Sauber and McLaren last year concerning de la Rosa in Canada could have been possible I guess.

The standard of driving at times was a bit poor, but an exciting race. The safety car was out more than once (no surprise there). You may feel sorry for Calado again...........

Oh such a shame about Glock not feeling great. Mind you Charles Pic should do a good job on his own for the team. But like GermanF1 says maybe Marussia should have taken it outta Glocks hands and decided before FP3 to get a second driver in for the rest of the weekend. Nevertheless I really hope Timo's feeling 100% for Sliverstone.
