Grand Prix 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

So it all comes down to the final race. The prancing horse versus the charging bull. The passionate Catalan versus the efficient German. Red versus Blue. Enough of the clichés, Vettel has a 13 point lead over Alonso going in to the race between the lakes so only has to finish in front of the Spaniard to claim his third title in a row. All the pressure will be on Ferrari and Alonso to give the Spaniard his third title and they probably need something to go wrong at Red Bull to stand any chance of winning, if their pace in the USA was anything to go by.

After his victory in the USA Lewis Hamilton will be hoping to leave McLaren on a high note. Lotus, surely, would love a second victory in 2012 but as fast as the car is it can't compete with the top 3 teams. Felipe Massa is starting to regain some of his old form and will, without doubt, be required to ride shotgun to Alonso. Mark Webber will be looking to win again at Interlagos but I doubt Vettel will suffer similar "brake" problems as he had last year.

The constructors championship is all sown up with Red Bull champions again. McLaren could steal 2nd place from Ferrari but a stronger performance from Jenson Button is needed in Brazil. Last year he was 3rd, two McLaren men in the top 4 could win them a few extra millions from FOM.

The final factor to build in is the weather. Brazil is notorious for changeable weather conditions and a sprinkling of rain could turn things Alonso's way. So tune next Sunday for the final event of 2012, but before then feel free to express your opinions below and don't forget to check out the circuit write up.

Great race today- as much as I'd like to have seen Alonso take the title, Vettel really earned his triple coming back from plumb last. Delighted to see JB bookend his season with another win too, Lewis and Hulk drove well, but lost out due to the conditions- them's the breaks! I didn't watch any of the BBC coverage all year, and thought Sky did a pretty decent job all round.

On a side note, I feel I am possibly owed a nod from the Tooned team for today's episode. That was definitely a view of Ron's command console going on there...(yes, I know I've been a bit slack in reporting from the MTC, but I do have a reasonable excuse...)

In fairness to Schumacher, he was never going to keep Vettel behind him. Vettel had closed 9 seconds in a few laps. why would Schumacher risk taking out the new 3 time WDC in his last race? Look what happened with the Hulk & Hamilton.

Since when did Schumacher become so charitable and accomating . He was less so to Kobayashi

to cap it all

Vettel ; Joins the 3 time WDC club and youngest ever and only Fangio and Schumacher ahead of him in back to back titles in a row

I have to say he seems to have Schumacher's luck now surviving two whacks and managed to keep his cool after lap 1

Webber ; the guy is a de facto No 2 driver now and a hairy moment when he squeezed Vettel. Another season of promise went downhill since his Silverstone victory. The sight of Vettel taking the spoils will sicken him

Alonso; He nearly did the impossible and could not have done more in retrospect in an inferior car and proved why he is the best driver currently in F1

Massa; Signs of the old Felipe coming back could and good to see him on the podium and doing the team job today but could cause a few more problems in 2013 based on the pace he is showing for the team

Hamilton ; today sums up Lewis ' season brilliant and on race winning pace once again and yet through no fault of his own gets taken out and loses another potential race win... he seems to have inherited bad luck compared to Vettel

Button; Not as consistent as last season but showed why in the conditions he is such a master of it and hopefully next season can lead Mclaren and step up to near his 2011 form

Hulkenberg ; Dubbed once " The Next Big Thing" he has finally arrived and made his impression with his impressive pace from the start and leading. Unfortunate his pass attempt cost him a podium which won;t be long. Finishing above his teammate and Williams drivers will give him great satisfaction..and if the Sauber is as good as this year then he could eclipse what Perez did

Di Resta; oh dear embarrassingly into the wall and gambled on the wrong set up but comprehensively beaten by his teammate in the last few races just when he was going to a big team will devalue his stock further. His early season form faded apart from Singapore and must now approach a cross road where next season could be make or break for him

----------------------------------------------

Perez - another no score - Mclaren must be a bit concerned and seriously a lot of work to do for him to be a front runner and potential WDC

Raikkonen - this was the poorest race he's had since his comeback. A great return after his time out but can his team really sustain a full season development if they are going to mount a serious title challenge

Grosjean - another accident , his early season promise has been derailed by his race ban which has shaken his confidence. If he can iron these out he will be a future star

Senna - the name puts more pressure on him and be surprised if he was still at Williams

Maldonado - the man has talent surprisingly and hopefully next season he will be on the grid again and could be the one to bring Williams back to more glory than just the race win in Spain

Kovalainen - it would be a great shame if this was his last race despite all his enthusiasm and magnificent effort to the team. He deserves a lot better than this exit from the sport

Kobayashi - like Kovalainen really forced out for the wrong reasons

Ricciardo/ Vergne - both achieved results less impressive than previous incumbents Buemi and Alguarsuari and certainly not ready to be Red Bull graduates yet although there were glimpses

Rosberg - well all change for Nico whose season ended up very disappointingly after his breakthough win ...big season for him next year against his friend Hamilton which could put his career in jeopardy if he fails to step up

Schumacher - the return did not work and his retirement this time has gone almost unnoticed

Glock - another season in Marussia must begin to demotivate him from his days at Toyota being a front runner

Just watched the race and analysis just there after I got back to work after 10!

What a race! I thought it had Alonso written all over it due to the way the seasons gone, but it wasn't to be and Vettel comes through after a great come back! 2008 Brazil will always pip this race for me no matter what, maybe it's because I support Massa and had much more emotion at that time, and the fact that I watched it live.

First of all, I am gutted on how Hulkenberg's race ended, I was cheering him right from the start, was a real shame that his rears locked up. Certainly (in my opinion) deserved at least a podium. Not sure why he got the penalty, yes he may have collided with Hamilton, but he had the move done, and because of a downshift in tricky conditions the car lost control. Real shame.

Feel for Hamilton too, he was also having a great race, seemed to be flying after the safety car came in, was unfortunate to be taken out, but with the backmarkers in these conditions, something like this is inevitable, and it's a shame it had to be him and Hulkenberg being caught up in it as they both drove blinders!

Button drove a good race, went missing at times, had good battles with the other two. Thought the other two did a better job and were unfortunate, but nevertheless, he kept his nose clean and had the pace to win.

I've noticed people are quick to say Vettel was lucky in this race, but Alonso himself was rather fortunate. Webber taking on Vettel team-mate right at the start, and then Massa holding off the everyone behind when Alonso was really struggling, plus the retirements ahead. Not degrading the lad, but luck went both ways in this race, to call one lucky and not the other is not right. Clearly didn't have the pace to fight for the win or the podium, but a great start made it slightly easier for himself, and with the retirements ahead got himself into a championship winning position. Got to feel for him though, after the mighty effort he and the team have put in, both have been flawless, really shouldn't have been in the championship, but due to other teams and drivers misfortunes, plus some luck, he nearly pulled off an almighty mission.

Massa's emotions at the end where as if he lost the championship and not his team-mate. But woow! Did he do his job today! After doing all what he did, plus Ferrari toying with him, he finishes on the podium (with a bit of fortune). Several great overtakes by him too.
Since Korea he looked like he could have beaten Alonso on merit if he wanted, today he looked like he could have held half of the grid back fot Alonso, eat Alonso for breakfast, play games with the Red-Bulls and run rings around every car in sight.
The last quarter of 2012 he has looked like he is regaining his 2008 form.
If he has a good winter and carries this into next year anyone reckon he may challenge Alonso now and again?

Oh what it could have been for Hulkenberg. Race victory looked to be on the cards as he had the pace on merit and the lead, a slight mistake let's Hamilton through, closes the gap back, nearly had the overtake done until the rear snapped. Got a drive through penalty, whether he deserved it or not is 50/50, in my opinion I don't think he did. Managed to come back and get a 5th, any other time a 5th place would have been a great result for him and Force India, but 5th seems like nothing when you could sniff race victory. Going to Sauber next season who haven't done much the past few races, and with Force India having a strong end to the season, one could say he's made the wrong move, but we will only find out next year.

Ah three titles in a row for Vettel. Last year was a piece of cake compared to this year. Rollercoaster of a race for the World Champion, lost positions at the start, got spun around by Senna, hefty impact on the car, dead last, yet despite all that, was up into 6th by lap 8! Helped by a few retirements along the way, but a mighty effort. The Red Bull team though nearly paid back Ferrari the favour from 2010 by nearly costing Vettel the championship through the pitstops after bringing him in for new dry tyres, then a lap or two later for intermediates which put him out of the points. Nevertheless, came back through to finish 6th with a little help along the way from retirements etc. and was enough to become the youngest triple World Champion.

The maestro pulls another great performance out of the bag. After a puncture and being dead last and 30s behind his nearest rival, he manages to come through to finish 7th, was helped by the unlapping behind the safety car rule as he was a lap down. But despite that, with all his experience, he made the call for intermediate tyres after that and came home to finish 7th. Not a great result to end the career for a legend, but having an awful car like that, the 7th place must feel like a small victory for him and the Mercedes team this season. Should he have came back? Maybe not, but for the three seasons we had him back for, F1 came a little more exciting.

Was a fine performance by Kobayashi for his last race with Sauber. Was flatout from the start, overtaking the Red Bulls and Ferrari's, his pace went away towards the end, and the spun he got demoted from 6th to 9th. A few hairy moments as he often found his car twitching a lot, an achievement that he only spun once. His drive today showed that he's worthy of a place in F1, infact, the championship standings do. Finished the season 6 points behind his team-mate who's moved to McLaren, while he's left with no race seat? Unfair you may say, and I agree. A real shame to see him away from the grid, although he has calmed down on the kamikaze style, the best F1 Japanese driver in my opinion.

Down to Vergne. Was a naughty boy and was lucky to finish 9th. Lucky why? Because he took out Timo Glock from contention for the race for 10th place in the constructors. Cost them £10m, but no penalty given. Understandable if Marussia feel angry by this, as Glock looked to have had pace to achieve the 11th place that Vitaly Petrov got. Some much needed points for Vergne who hasn't scored for a while.

An eventful race for Kimi Raikkonen. Avoided taking out the triple World Champion going into Turn 3/4, in doing so, his race got comprimised from the get-go. The team pitted him too early for the intermediate tyres, where he lost lots of time, and was an uphill battle from there. Had some good battles, especially against his nemesis Michael Scumacher and passed him with a great overtake. Then seemed to have spun, and decided to join another racetrack, only to have realised that there was a gate blocking his way. Comes home with a point, and creates a new record of most Grand Prix finishes in a season by finishing all 20 races, scoring points in all but 1. Not bad for a come back season eh?

Di Resta is not looking too good at the moment, several incidents this race, and has been put into shade by Hulkenberg, being out-scored in the last 6 races by 32 points to 2. Hulkenberg at least had a minor excuse at the start of the season, he had a season out of F1 and hadn't raced with KERS, DRS and Pirelli tyres. But di Resta? He's not done much to catch the attention of top teams, yet was brooding about not getting chosen.

Will Grosjean keep his seat at Lotus? He's only scored 20 points compared to his team-mates 66 since Singapore and has retired from 7 Grand Prixs.

Who will get the Caterham seat? Heikki Kovalianen's seat depended on Caterham getting 10th in the constructors, they achieved that, but he looked dejected after the race and seemed to look as if it was his last race for Caterham, maybe in Formula 1 in total. Then there's Petrov, who brings money, has matched Kovalinen this season, and got that crucial 11th place in Brazil. But rumours are that it will be their third driver Giedo Van der Garde, who has good backing, but doesn't look to be an improvement on the two above mentioned.

Overall great season. Although I did start to lose interest after Belgium, but the past 3 races have been the best of the season, it's a shame that Hamilton wasn't in the title fight this season. A three way battle would have been great, but we've been spoiled enough this season.

Let's hope that the Kimster and Massa are competitive next year, and Buemi gets the race seat at Force India :D

Slightly late to put in my twopenn'orth but here it is.
Firstly congratulations Seb, a solid drive through the field to do what was needed, you can't doubt his skill & courage but he also has incredible luck too.
My heart went out to Alonso, he so nearly did it & he's certainly galvanising Ferrari in the same way Schumacher did.
Oh dear Lewis, what a sad yet typical end to his career at McLaren, taken out in a racing incident which was not his fault.
Personally I don't think it was Hulk's 'fault' either, just a racing incident, too many cars for the piece of track, a poor surface & a car snapping. Seems like Seb & Lewis are the luck personification of Newton's third law (for every piece of good luck Seb has Lewis has an equal and opposite piece of bad luck!)
Radio 5 had some numpty on this morning saying Lewis should have backed out of the manoeuvre - what an idiot! Firstly no-one gives up the lead of a race without a fight & secondly where would he have gone to - into the Marussia behind him or the Caterham in front?!
The end of the race was rather a damp squib & as someone else has pointed out the Force India's were the biggest party poopers. I really don't like endings under the safety car even though there was a good reason this time.
Jenson showed a bit of his character today "a perfect result for McLaren" - hardly! With Lewis going out they lost the second spot in the WCC. A 1-2 would be the perfect result. I have a feeling Jenson's idea of "team" is Jenson.
So driver of the day? For me amazingly for the second race in a row, Felipe Massa. He showed spirit out there and great skill and true teamwork. I really hope Ferrari do the decent thing and allow him to race next year, it was great seeing him back in the zone.
Manoeuvre of the day - oh Kimi undoubtedly! Hilarious watching him pop off into a side road to do a three point turn, that got my smile of the day :)
The race in general was very exciting but the ending was unfortunate & my opinion is I would have preferred Alonso to win the WDC, he's had the harder road to travel this year & was battling against the odds (Seb did have 4x "red bull" cars, 5 Germans & the FIA on his side this year to go with his consummate skill & best car).
Oh well, roll on 2013 where I hope Lewis podiums beforer Jenson (wicked I know!) & one of the minnows manages to score points.

... In which case, shouldn't Vettel have been given a drive through for hitting Senna? ;)

Well yes it was rather inconsistent and in the true sense they were both avoidable (Hulk knew he was going on the wet line and Vettel didn't look in his mirrors). Personally I prefer no penalties in these circumstances. Shit happens right and neither were intentional or wreckless. I think the debate here is whether an apology was appropriate which I think it was in the sense that when you bump into someone in the street you say sorry out of decency.

That said Hulkenberg's version of events wasn't exactly how I saw it... "I obviously decided to make a move into Turn 1 and was on the damp side of the track and lost the rear a little bit. Unfortunately we collided. Looking at the incident I think it's just one of those things in racing. I think he could've turned away a bit. But the way it worked wasn't good for either of us."

Not entirely sure where Hamilton was supposed to go given he had a caterham in front of him and a FI sliding towards him.

Hamberg - I do agree - If one of these was punished then really both should have been punished! Certainly, I don't know where Vettel expected Senna to go when he speared to the apex! Similarly, I don't think there was anywhere Hamilton could go to....
