Grand Prix 2011 Indian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Is the season over yet?

Unfortunately the answer is no as the F1 circus rumbles onto India for a brand new track, but after problems with the construction of the track, there is a degree of hesitation as not everyone is overjoyed about the prospect of a race there at the current moment in time. Added to the fact that it is another Tilke track, many fans aren't optimistic for an exciting race, but we've been proven wrong before. After all, we thought 2011 would be a close championship!!

Red Bull reasserted itself as the best car on the track after a dominant win in Korea with Vettel taking yet another win as he continues to rewrite the record books in the same way as Schumacher used to, just not as controversially as the elder German. Mark Webber had his strongest races recently pushing Hamilton very hard for second place, perhaps showing that he still has it for next season.

Hamilton put a long list of poor races behind to finish second in Korea after taking his first pole position of the season and it turned out after the race that he was running with tyre bits in the front wing which was costing a good couple a tenths a lap, something which would surely have cost him a true crack at a third race victory of the season, but at the very least it shows that he's getting back to his best, but a split with his partner might explain a less than happy mood recently.

Ferrari are constantly lingering as the team behind the top 2 and they are almost in a race with themselves as they are far quicker than Mercedes but not quick enough (mainly Massa) to challenge the Red Bulls and Mclarens for victories, particularly on a consistent basis after the problems with the EBD after Silverstone.

In the midfield there is a serious log jam as Mercedes, Renault, Force India, Sauber and Toro Rosso fight over points and championship places as a lot of money is at stake for 4th-8th in the championship and it's probably the best place to see action at the moment as the racing has been close and extremely well fought with different cars being better at each different circuit with none having the best all round package of the 5 teams. Now even Team lotus is getting involved in the action as they are starting to beat some of these cars on pure pace which will no doubt please the owners, and Kovalainen beating Petrov on pure pace in Singapore would particularly have pleased the team after the rows with Group lotus this season.

No-one knows what to expect from the Indian track, but early reports indicate it's better than previous Tilke tracks, but then it can't be worse than Bahrain and Abu Dhabi really.... We hope so anyway.

So,no penalty for Button because a flag was waved erroneously and he 'said he lifted'. Penalty for Hamilton whilst an erronous flag was waved and Lewis said ' yeah penalty, bring it on'. Great consistency here.
Firstly, the telemetry may prove that Button lifted. Also, there is no word that the yellow flag in Lewis' case was erroneous. To be fair, Lewis was using DRS there, when there were yellow flags, which is even more dangerous than not slowing down. But, after watching the Senna movie for the first time (great film btw ) the stewarding now is a lot more consistent than it was then.

I may have missed this but I believe both incidents would have been looked at, both drivers were the victim of erroneous flags, one chose not to risk the yellow and obviously by telemetry was shown to have lifted (Button) and the other didn't and actually admitted to activating his DRS at that point (Hamilton). Hamilton admitted his mistake and received a penalty after it was investigated by the stewards, Button was found not to have transgressed.

Unless there's something else surely that's it?

I think lives are more important than keeping key players in the game.

As Keke's posted video shows........when Lewis went through the area in which he was penalized, Maldanado's car was already removed, and it was behind the safety barriers, along with the course workers. During the incident in which Hamilton IMO was given an unwarranted penalty, posed no danger to course workers at that time, but the same cannot be said for......Jenson!

Yeah, good for you? There was still a flag being waved though and he did use the DRS! Maybe if he and Mclaren had complained he wouldn't have gotten a penalty. Jenson obviously did slow down, they most likely used the telemetry to be sure. there were no course workers on track when Jenson went past the incident.

I'm not going to discuss this any further as any discussion about Hamilton always ends up going in stupid circles and I, and probably quite a few other people are sick of it.

What time do I set my alarm to? I'm seriously confused with the clocks going back! If my phone goes back automatically, I wake up an hour early, if they don't I'm on time/late an hour! Decisions!

I've got the same problem as you. What I will do is set the phone for 8:30 as normal. If the phone doesn't switch then you'll wake up on time for the programme. If it does change automatically, you will wake up an hour early but you can then set the alarm for an hour later and go back to sleep. That's what I'd do, as I can never remember if my phone changes automatically.

If that makes any sense.

But he lifted did he not? Isn't this the reason why he didn't get penalised? Seems more plausible than because his name isn't Hamilton?

The question is when did he lift?.....It seems that it wasn't because of waving yellow flags, but a slowing HRT.

Why were yellow flags even shown to Hamilton, even though the area is clear of Maldanado's car and the course marshals, and both being behind the safety barriers.......and the question that track safety lights were being displayed green not yellow, but.....green......when Lewis drove through that area.

I can't remember either! BBC coverage starts at 8:30 which would be 7:30, I'm going for 8:30 which mean start of BBC or start of race! Good night! Hopefully see you in chat tomorrow morning!

Look, all I can do is take it in good faith that he lifted at the right time as did Alguersuari in P1. I have to admit, I'm not sure how much safer 0.7 seconds slower is for a marshall but hey, thems the rules, apparently.

And that Hamilton not only ignored flags (rightly or wrongly), and remember this is flags not lights, he also opened DRS which I imagine is an aggravating factor.

I can't really argue for Hamilton when he has accepted full responsibility.
