Manor Motorsport

When F3 team Manor Motorsport were given a place on the F1 grid in 2010 they commissioned Wirth Research to build them a car. Brawn sponsor Virgin became title sponsor and Virgin Racing was born

Virgin Racing

With Cosworth engines, Xtrac gearboxes and drivers Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi Virgin Racing embarked on their first F1 season. The VR01 chassis was the first ever F1 designed entirely using CFD, with designer Nick Wirth believing computer simulations were sufficient to not need expensive wind tunnel testing.

Inevitably the team had reliability issues early on and they also discovered the fuel tank on the car wasn't sufficiently large enough to allow the team to complete full race distance. Wirth Research got a dispensation from the FIA to homologate a new chassis and by Spain both cars finished the race.

The team regularly finished races but barely troubled the mid-field. By seasons end the team were placed 12th and last in the Constructors Championship based on a count back of minor placing’s having managed a highest finish of 14th.

2011

Russian carmaker Marussia have taken a controlling interest in the team for 2011 and Belgian Jerome d’Ambrosio replaces Lucas di Grassi. With the VR02 chassis Virgin will be hoping to move further up the grid in 2011.

Let's hope they can make better use of a Ferrari engine in the back of their car than Caterham are doing at the moment with a Renault in the back of theirs.

Marussia with Pat Symonds in charge will move more forward than Caterham with Gascoyne

The team will improve more forward than Caterham

Gascoyne is not in charge at Caterham, and has not been for a while now, he seems to be in charge of composites and round the world yachting.

I do agree that Marussia under Symonds should do well though, they seem to have made solid if not spectacular progress, and the focus would seem to be in the right areas.

It will be interesting to see if Marussia can do any better than Caterham at closing in on the midfield.

The Pits

Given what Fernandes is considering as priority - Premier league football with QPR..I see Caterham really struggling to close the gap

I thought given Gascoyne's experience at Tyrell, Jordan , Renault and Toyota the team ought to have done better

We've been waiting for 3 years now and still not anywhere

Marussia have got rid of Nick Wirth and his CFD and put Symonds in charge and seems to be heading in the right direction

Let's hope they can make better use of a Ferrari engine in the back of their car than Caterham are doing at the moment with a Renault in the back of theirs.

It would be quite hard to compare, since 2014 we will have new engines that will have different performance levels and will have radical changes.

OK, I know that it's not the most favoured site for F1 but:

"...staff at the Caterham F1 team, which is based in Leafield in Oxfordshire, have been assured the football club’s plight has nothing to do with the F1 team.
An insider said: “The two businesses have always been run separately, so QPR’s relegation will not affect the Formula One team."

Considering the financial quicksand that QPR are about to find themselves in, anyone with any interest in Caterham better hope that is true.

However, QPR are going to need to be subsidised to a huge degree because they can't continue paying those wages in the Championship. Fernandes' personal wealth has to be affected.

A lost bet!

All teams are equal (But some teams are more equal than others)

Interesting talk from Marussia regarding the deal with sponsorship, Bernie and CVC. It does appear Ecclestone doesn't really think the team bring much to the table and it may be them he's refering too when he says the grid shoukd be more elite. Caterham doesn't seem to have the same issues and Bernie seemed very keen to welcome American team Scorpion to the grid though. hmmmm.

Interesting bit of this from Bernie: "we used to pay all the teams because we had an agreement with Max. Now he's gone its just the top 10"

Are we missing Max again?

Mr Ecclestone does not like Marussia so he decided not to pay them. Unfortunately for him he can't always control the results, if things stay as they are now Marussia will get paid and one of Mr Ecclestones favourite, Caterham, will not.

There have been a few things this year which have not gone his way, circuit owners seem to be reluctant to pay his fees, hence the gaps we are getting between races. Now it sounds as though he might just be admitting that there is a possibility that his freedom could be curtailed. If he were to be away for a couple of years things could change in ways he does not like.

what have Marussia done to upset Bernie ? Its not like HRT :no: who got onto the grid when clearly they were not in a position to do so
I guess he realises Marussia don't have any millionaires or billionaires to join the circus
