The Beginning

Toro Rosso took over the Minardi entry in F1 in 2006. Minardi took part in 345 Grands Prix between 1985 and 2005 without a single win, podium, pole or fastest lap but were the starting point for double World Champion Fernando Alonso and race winners Mark Webber and Jarno Trulli.

Red Bull Takeover

At the end of 2005 current Minardi team owner Paul Stoddart sold the team to Red Bull to allow them to create a “Junior” team to bring new driver talent into F1. The Red Bull take over resulted in a change of name to Squadra Toro Rosso and then Scuderia Toro Rosso amidst much complaint from Minardi fans. For their first season in 2006 drivers Vitantonio Liuzzi and Scott Speed used the STR1 chassis, which was essentially the Red Bull RB1 car. These were fitted with rev and air flow limited 3.0 litre Ford engines to allow Toro Rosso to compete in the new 2.4 litre formula in place for 2006.

Liuzzi scored a point for the team at the US Grand Prix, a race where only 9 cars finished. The development of the new engines by the other teams put Toro Rosso in a very uncompetitive position and they tended to qualify toward the back of the grid and run in those positions in the race.

Ferrari Customer

With the senior Red Bull team moving to Renault power for 2007 Toro Rosso picked up their Ferrari engine contract. Speed and Liuzzi continued as drivers. The STR2 proved unreliable and both drivers made mistakes during the year leading to speculation that they would be replaced. Speed eventually lost his seat to BMW test driver, and Red Bull junior driver, Sebastien Vettel. In changeable weather at the Chinese Grand Prix Vettel bought his car home 4th with Liuzzi 6th.

For 2008 Vettel was joined by reigning Champ Car Series winner Sebastien Bourdais as Liuzzi moved to Force India. Bourdais finished 7th at the opening race of the season in Australia and Vettel then took 4th in Monaco. As the season progressed Vettel in particular was a regular points scorer and in wet qualifying at the Italian Grand Prix put his car on pole. The rain continued into race day and Vettel went on to win the race becoming the youngest ever Grand Prix victor. More points finishes for Vettel in the final races of the season put Toro Rosso 6th in the Constructors Championship and earned him a place in the Red Bull senior team for 2009.

Sebastien Buemi joined Bourdais for 2009 and after the highs of 2008 the team came back down to earth in ’09. Bourdais was dismissed mid season due to poor race results and Jaime Alguersuari took his seat for the remainder of the season. The drivers managed a few low points finished but the team dropped to 10th in the Constructors Championship.

Buemi and Alguersuari continued for 2010 and again picked up some minor points placing’s, helped by the revised points scoring system for the season. The team finished 9th in the Constructors Championship but were the lowest placed of the established F1 teams.

2011

Toro Rosso continue with the same driver line up in 2011 and, with the STR6 car and Ferrari engines, hope they can move further up the grid.

While all the focus will be on Ricciardo and his top notch drive today spare thought for JEV who'd driven great strategy wise to jump up to 5th and would have also been well in the points on a 2 stop if his tire hadn't given out.

The Toro Rosso is looking good at the moment and having Webbers seat to aim for will certainly push the guys along. If they need more good news then their possible replacements Felix Da Costa, Sainz Jr and Kuvyt are all being made to look distinctly average in their respective series and are not knocking on the door for the drive at all!

Yeah Webber has championed Ricciardo for the seat ..why not given its a fellow Aussie and someone he can mentor to beat Seb

One will be driving a bright red car (possibly) and the other will be in a purple one? They both have different surnames? One's Christian name is Felipe the other's is Luiz? Their cars will have different numbers on them? Their crash helmets are different designs? One is a talented, up and coming driver the other is a washed up has been who should sod off and let a faster driver have his seat? One will move quickly out of Fernado Alonso's way the other won't?

Although I'd love to see Nasr in the car as he's a great driver I'd eat my Ipod if it wasn't someone from their young drivers programme.

90% sure it will be Felix Da Costa(although he's not been brilliant in the 3.5 series this year) although Kyvat is an outside bet as he stormed to a win in the GP3 at Spa and has put Sainz Jr in his place. I'm sure Red Bull would love to crack that Russian market.

He looks a good prospect and has been the onlg junior driver producing the goos this year.

Still jumping up to F1 from GP3 is rather a large leap.

What now for Felix Da Costa?

According to a dutch website, Torro Rosso wasn't that sure anymore about Da Costa after his bad season, so they approached Vandoorne for a one year seat. But after negotiating with his management they choose to stay with Mclaren, because with Mclaren it was for a long term.

Didn't expect Daniil.

Indeed RasputinLives , after a bad season in WSBR and his chances of getting in F1 can go from good to very slim, just look at Da Costa. And in what team can Mclaren place there young drivers? Maurusia? I rather take a Torro Rosso seat.

You've not seen Kyvats junior record then?

He was one of a group of drivers in the Red Bull junior programme and this year he's got the best results and hence he's got the seat. So not sure what you're trying to say with the dollar signs.

Bushi I'm really surprised at Vandorne not grabbing his chance with both hands. He must trust Mclaren.

McLaren certainly aren't as cutthroat as Dr. Marko - as he has proved again with this decision. Ultimately it should be a meritocracy and da Costa has had a stunning half-season followed by a mediocre full season. His chance though will come again, I think, though probably he only gets one more.

Hard to believe that Kyvat gets the call.

Marko must have really seen something in that epic battle vs Norman Nato to win the 2012 Formula Renault 2.0 Alps Season Championship to make this move.

I think its more of a sign of Felix Da Costa and Sainz Jr not looking great this year that got him the nod. Kyvat certainly stepped up a gear in GP3 from Spa onwards.

Oh and lets not diss Norman Nato! He'll be the DAMS man going for the 3.5 series title next year!

It was covered in Autosport a few issues back about Da Costa not really dominating 3.5 series like Ricciardo and Vergne did and they wonder if it was the car or the team or just that Da Costa was not good

The article was basically saying whether he is not good enough to get into F1 as they are saying he is not going to get the Toro Rosso seat
