Team History

Before Red Bull

In 1997 Paul Stewart, aided by his father Jackie and the Ford Motor Company, made the leap from F3000 to F1 as an entrant. Jonny Herbert won 1 race for the Stewart team before it was sold off to Ford who re-branded the cars as Jaguar.

Ford stuck with it through thick and thin (mainly thin) through to the end of 2004 before selling the team to Dietrich Mateschitz, who owns the Red Bull drinks brand, for $1 on the understanding he invested $400 million over 3 years

Red Bull Racing

With Christian Horner installed as team principal, McLaren refugee David Coulthard and Christian Klien as the drivers Red Bull went racing. Their first season was certainly more successful than Jaguar had managed, even with the same Cosworth power plant, with Coulthard managing a 4th place at the European Grand Prix and the team finishing 7th in the Constructors Championship.

Adrian Newey joined from McLaren as chief designer for 2006 and Red Bull swapped to Ferrari engines. Coulthard managed a podium at his "home" race in Monaco prompting Christian Horner to jump naked, other than wearing a red cape, into a swimming pool.

Christian Klien, who shared the car with Vitantonio Liuzzi in 2005 and Robert Doornbos in 2006, departed the team for 2007 and was replaced by Mark Webber. The RB3 was the first full "Newey" car and was coupled with a Renault motor. The car was very unreliable, suffering from a variety of different problems but Webber managed a podium at the European Grand Prix and the team finished 5th in the WCC.

Retaining the same engine and drivers for 2008 Red Bull slipped back to 7th in the WCC and again only managed a single podium, for Coulthard in Canada, but the reliability issues which plagued the car the previous season were mainly resolved.

2009 was Red Bull's break through year. With Coulthard having retired Webber was joined by Red Bull junior driver Sebastien Vettel. The new rules allowed Newey to design a car which challenged for both the Drivers and Constructors Championship. Webber won 2 races, Vettel 4 and the team climbed to 2nd in WCC taking 3 pole positions en-route.

In 2010 Red Bull justified Mateschitz's investment winning the Constructors title and Vettel the Drivers Championship. They won 9 races through the season, 5 for Vettel and 4 for Webber and took 10 poles. Webber led the title race for much of the season but it was the 23 year old Vettel who stole the title in the last race of the season and became the youngest Champion as a result.

2011 sees the team retain the same driver line up as 2010 and continue with Renault engine power in the new RB7 car.

You did Batman and I said I thought the contract had been cancelled which now appears to not be the case. I can't believe every single F1 media source out there has convinently glossed over that fact.

I guess it doesn't sell papers

F1 news: Red Bull back in talks with Renault over F1 engine supply

ROFL

RasputinLives I think we all got fooled by Renault's statement about engine supply and assumed that the split was irreconcilable but the words never came from Red Bull that the notice to terminate had been formally accepted by Renault and Red Bull would have to pay the compensation.

rufus_mcdufus Who was it that just said Renault were 2 to 3 years behind Mercedes recently? ROFL:embarrassed::oops::facepalm: Oh dear looks like someone has to eat their words:spank: because it's comeback to bite their ass.

Be funny if Renault demand that they will work with Red Bull if only Foghorn Leghorner is removed because he is a disruptive influence and destroys team harmony

Well this article has a quote from Renault which implies there is still a contract, but they are debating whether to honor it (which means they get paid for more engines) or not honor it (in which case they have to pay RBR, but end their name being dragged through dirt). It also implied RBR may have had to pay penalties if they choose to terminate the agreement for 2016 too.

F1 news: Staying with Red Bull for F1 2016 would be tough sell for Renault

Batman That is why Red Bull should publicly apologise :embarrassed:and somehow Renault will accept it :aww:. Having said that Renault have shown serious restrained from a typical French company who either would have walked or gone on strike

I do think Renault should turn up the ante and demand Horner be sacked . How can you work with someone who wastes no time in mouthing you off at every race

I see Red Bull as the school boy gangleader bully to Renault at the moment where they would pay them to be part of the gang and then kick them in the balls each day to show whose in charge

Why would Renault want to go through that again?:wave:

Not just bully to Renault but to the whole sport. First they bully Renault. Then they tried to bully Mercedes and Ferrari to give them engines with threats to quit.

I think they should just make them sign an agreement to not mouth off with financial penalties involved, and maybe also require them to engage in advertising that credits Renault for their 4 world championships.

Better still Renault should blackmail them into selling the team to Renault cheap.

I hear of a MBO by Christian Horner of the team but it still does not answer the problem of who would supply that team the engines?

I would have to say being logistically close Honda would be forced to supply engines being that close because surely Renault would not want to be dealing with Horner?

In any other sport I call it ludicrous with about as much chance Mark Warburton being the next celtic manager absolutely zero
But this is f1 & impossible normally possible especially with Bernie in charge. Red Bull do have a 2016 contract with Renault (that they are quickly try to get it out of shredder) & it wouldn't surprise me stranger things have happened

But I did enjoy ted kravitz interview with horner pre qualifying all of a sudden horner being nice & kravitz said you cant seriously believe they are going to take you back after last few yrs

So clearly if a deal with Renault is still on the cards, then all the threats of leaving unless they get a better engine were quite simply bullshit. They don't want to leave and have had their bluff called.

At this point nothing would surprise me. Even running a Honda engine next year wouldn't surprise me.

rufus_mcdufus Trust Christian" FogHorn Leg" Horner to say something stupid:facepalm:

What if Renault come back and tell Red Bull we will have you back but the asking price for the engine has doubled to cover brand reputation damage. I'd like the look on Christian's face if he was asked in public about it
