If I recall correctly it was never free use in the race but they could use it freely in qualifying which was subsequently banned because they were doing stuff like that.

But they are the best drivers in the world, praised for pushing their cars to the limit. Sometimes they overstep the limits and learn not to do it again.

Which is why, I'm in a huge minority, but I've always had a soft spot for Jacques Villeneuve.
