The 2012 Season

I'm not aware that anyone else's DRS has failed in the open position, so I don't quite see your point. But I would expect any driver to get the black and orange flag in such an event if they didn't come in voluntarily, then a black flag and accompanying penalty if they continued to ignore that.
Here's an extract from the relevant technical regulation:
3.18 Driver adjustable bodywork :

3.18.1 The incidence of the rearmost and uppermost closed section described in Article 3.10.2 may be varied whilst the car is in motion provided :
- The design is such that failure of the system will result in the uppermost closed section returning to the normal high incidence position.
- Any alteration of the incidence of the uppermost closed section may only be commanded by direct driver input and controlled using the control electronics specified in Article 8.2.

Alonso's DRS was seen opening by itself in China last year at the exit of the corner following the straight. He wasn't penalised because it was ruled it hampered him rather gave him an advantage, or something along those lines I seem to remember.

I don't think so. If the hydraulics failed then the DRS flap wouldn't shut at all, doesn't matter which car it's on. Now they need to find a way of making the flap close no matter what happens.
Very simple to do.

The hydraulics would be used to hold the flap open with a spring acting as the return.
If the hydraulics fail the flap will automatically close.

Not sure that would work. If the failure was the valve sticking then the hydraulic fluid would not be released from the actuator cylinder no matter how many springs were on the flap.

The solution is simple, dump the hydraulics and use an electric solenoid. If a charge is applied the flap opens, if there is no charge such as in a failure the flap would stay closed.

Build in fail safes such as two valves or more.
The odds of two or more sticking are outside the realms of probability, unless it's a faulty batch.

If the rules say it must fail in the closed position, it is up to the teams to ensure this occurs, whichever way they achieve this. The teams are involved in setting the rules, and would have been aware of the implications before any design work was undertaken.

Not sure that's much different from the existing set-up, with the downforce on the flap acting as the "spring".

Article by Mark Hughes in Autosport today suggests that the McLaren is the fastest car and if race wins had occurred without strategy and pit errors, they would have gone: Button, Perez, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Hamilton, Schumacher, Hamilton

Of course it's impossible to say what could have happened, but Hamilton must be annoyed that he only has one win so far when it could have been as many as three.

Alonso really stole a march on the others with the Valencia result didn't he? Does put me in mind of Korea 2010 though when once again the opposition destroyed itself and Fernando looked in pole position.

Lets not forget how dominant Seb and Red Bull looked before his alternator went though. He looked pretty much untouchable again. Shows how quickly things change when we had a predictions on this thread earlier that Red Bull weren't even going to win a race this season. I think they've very much jumped to the front and the others have to catch up. However the next Grand Prix being Silverstone I'm not going for Vettel to win but Webber as thats one of the few tracks Mark usually gets the better of Seb. I think in the long run though Webber title challenge won't hold and it'll be between Alonso, Vettel and Hamilton although I predict one of the Lotus drivers to have a late run at it as they look pretty strong and the Enstone based team have been known for the development over the seasons. Not that they need much as they've had the pace to win 3 out of the 8 we've had so far. I do really hope Grosjean gets a win this season because I think if Lotus can build him the right car next season or season after he would be able to put in a pretty handy title challenge.

Anyways loving this season. Even Valencia was exciting......although lets remember without a broken Red Bull it wouldn't have been!

It's quite surprising how Webber's form this season has gone under the radar so to speak after people were very quick to criticise him in 2011 and say he had no chance this season

To be fair, he would have been hammered this race if not for Vettel's alternator failing.

Although Webber did have hydraulic problems in qualifying.

Just a comment on the alternator thing. During the Le Mans race the commentators said that whenever there was an engine failure the press release always said it was an alternator problem as the teams didn't want their competition to know they had motor problems. Wonder if the same is true here?
