Site Suggestions & Updates

The Google +1 button has been removed.

In the 6 months since it was installed, it has been clicked 11 times and as it adds hugely to page loading times, it's not worth keeping.

The FB and Twitter buttons aren't that much better so they too may disappear to improve site performance.

Hi Bro, more a bug than a suggestion, not sure this is the correct forum. Anyway here goes.

I had a weird buggy issue last night when cutting and pasting my going for gold quiz from a word document into the website. The 'hit the buzzer' spoiler buttons were appearing 3 times but were only typed once. Once I deleted the buzzer text completely and retyped it. It was resolved. Bit of a strange one. Is this a word compatibility issue?

I am guessing the answer is to use simple text instead of word.
Cheers.

I would suggest that, if you ever introduce blog type article pages that they will be of more use there. People are generally less likely to share conversations where they are actively engaged in a community than an article which provides a composed insight.

Have you thought about social bookmarking aggregators, such as ShareThis or AddThis?

Another consideration might be a dedicated social page including Twitter feeds, Facebook page feeds and (not available yet) Google+ feeds as well as links to those social properties. Google+ launched "Business Pages" about two weeks ago in the same vein as Facebook pages. If executed well (not much effort required) then these can be huge traffic drivers. Google+ has been growing steadily since it's launch, to the point that Facebook have taken quite a lot of notice. they do have a long way to go but as Google continue to integrate their huge range of services and with Google Music and other services on the way there are undoubtably opportunities to be taken advantage of by stealing a march.

I've often wondered how I could best contribute to this site outside of the donations and being an active member of the community and social is something that I would gladly assist with, should you want to pursue this area of site promotion.

Yes, if you copy and paste from Word, all of the formatting will be retained when using the WYSIWYG editor.
So stuff like fonts, sizes, etc.

That can really mess up the post content so the answer is to use a plain text application such as Notepad, or to switch to the plain text editor by clicking the [sup]A[/sup]A in the top right hand corner.

I offered blog functionality and it was rejected: http://cliptheapex.com/threads/would-anyone-like-blog-functionality.2246/
Like you I think Blogs would have been a nice addition.

Try clicking the Share link on the right. Even so, we had them on the old site and they were never used then either.

Thanks, I'm not exactly sure what you mean so if you want to speak in private about it, please send me a message.

We now have a real home tab which remains focussed when on the home page.
What we had before was just a link.

The new feature opens up the possibility to add any forum or page to the nav bar with a focussed tab, so there may be a few more changes as others are added.

Sorry I haven't got back about the social bits. I'll give you a nudge when I get a mo.

In the meantime, well done with the home tab. That used to really annoy me (expectation failed). This leads me to my next suggestion. Given that the home tab does not have a sub-nav this leaves you with an empty bar. Perfect real-estate for a news ticker rotating the top 5 stories or latest threads. There are lots of examples of this.

Not a great site but you can see an example on www.whatdigitalcamera.co.uk. Whilst this demonstrates its placement, the version is not WCAG compliant, so you can look at another example on www.bbc.co.uk/news. The BBC implementation is below the nav so you would effectively want an amalgamation of the two executions.

You may possibly find an out of the box solution for this in the xenforo libraries.

Regarding the ticker below the navbar, we had that on the last site.
The current implementation of that is the RSS feed in the sidebar on the home page and forum list.

I'm reluctant to install any add-ons which I'm not absolutely 100% happy with.
Too many of them are poorly coded and add too many queries to the page, etc.
I'm not saying that one is though as I haven't looked at it.

No calendar yet unfortunately.
I could embed a Google calendar in a Page for now, if anyone would find that useful?
It would need someone(s) to update it though - I just don't have the time to add all the series to it.

I did look at the Google calendar before we migrated but I ran into problems with the CSS.
Google have the annoying habit of forcing you to use the style sheets located on their servers, making it impossible to style items to match the site.
Overriding the style sheets for the tables and charts in the Race Hub took a lot of time and effort.

As a trial, the RSS feed has been removed from the forum page and replaced with a Twitter feed.

The RSS feed is already on the home page anyway, so at least now there is an alternative stream of news.

Why dont you follow us members?
The site Twitter account only follows motorsport related Twitter accounts.

For the new Twitter feed, the following accounts have been added:
https://twitter.com/#!/GPUpdate
https://twitter.com/#!/autosportnews
https://twitter.com/#!/MBrundleF1
https://twitter.com/#!/ScarbsF1
https://twitter.com/#!/CroftyF1
https://twitter.com/#!/5LiveF1
https://twitter.com/#!/Jamesallenonf1
https://twitter.com/#!/F1
https://twitter.com/#!/FIAPressRelease
https://twitter.com/#!/SkySportsF1

From experience, those accounts tend to have good information, without being full of rubbish.
As and when the commentary teams for BBC and Sky get sorted out, we can think about adding some more.

If anyone has any particularly good accounts to suggest, please do so.
I don't really want to add teams and drivers though, as the interesting news snippets will just get lost in the avalanche of Tweets.

If there's any call for it I could see about setting up a page with different feeds on; one for teams, another for drivers, blogs, media, etc.
