Team History

Before Red Bull

In 1997 Paul Stewart, aided by his father Jackie and the Ford Motor Company, made the leap from F3000 to F1 as an entrant. Jonny Herbert won 1 race for the Stewart team before it was sold off to Ford who re-branded the cars as Jaguar.

Ford stuck with it through thick and thin (mainly thin) through to the end of 2004 before selling the team to Dietrich Mateschitz, who owns the Red Bull drinks brand, for $1 on the understanding he invested $400 million over 3 years

Red Bull Racing

With Christian Horner installed as team principal, McLaren refugee David Coulthard and Christian Klien as the drivers Red Bull went racing. Their first season was certainly more successful than Jaguar had managed, even with the same Cosworth power plant, with Coulthard managing a 4th place at the European Grand Prix and the team finishing 7th in the Constructors Championship.

Adrian Newey joined from McLaren as chief designer for 2006 and Red Bull swapped to Ferrari engines. Coulthard managed a podium at his "home" race in Monaco prompting Christian Horner to jump naked, other than wearing a red cape, into a swimming pool.

Christian Klien, who shared the car with Vitantonio Liuzzi in 2005 and Robert Doornbos in 2006, departed the team for 2007 and was replaced by Mark Webber. The RB3 was the first full "Newey" car and was coupled with a Renault motor. The car was very unreliable, suffering from a variety of different problems but Webber managed a podium at the European Grand Prix and the team finished 5th in the WCC.

Retaining the same engine and drivers for 2008 Red Bull slipped back to 7th in the WCC and again only managed a single podium, for Coulthard in Canada, but the reliability issues which plagued the car the previous season were mainly resolved.

2009 was Red Bull's break through year. With Coulthard having retired Webber was joined by Red Bull junior driver Sebastien Vettel. The new rules allowed Newey to design a car which challenged for both the Drivers and Constructors Championship. Webber won 2 races, Vettel 4 and the team climbed to 2nd in WCC taking 3 pole positions en-route.

In 2010 Red Bull justified Mateschitz's investment winning the Constructors title and Vettel the Drivers Championship. They won 9 races through the season, 5 for Vettel and 4 for Webber and took 10 poles. Webber led the title race for much of the season but it was the 23 year old Vettel who stole the title in the last race of the season and became the youngest Champion as a result.

2011 sees the team retain the same driver line up as 2010 and continue with Renault engine power in the new RB7 car.

You would have though Red Bull might have recruited someone to this position a bit sooner

If Daniel is back then Red Bull will win the constructors if Merc don't improve..however I don't see him being given a fair shot at the title

and Alex Palou is being lined up for the second seat at Alpha Tauri.
alex palou has been outstanding so far. leigh diffey was saying in pre race at mid ohio, nobody has dominated indycar in the way he is currently won 3 in a row & 4 of the last 5. if it wasnt for someone crashing into him in pitlane at the indy 500. he would be going into this week in Toronto with the chance to equal indycar record of 6 wins in a row.

in the championship standings he has 110 point lead to put it into perspective Scott Dixon in 2nd is closer to felix Rosenquist in 13th than he is to Palou.

but the only issue is the complicated chip ganassi/mclaren contract & we are still taking Jacques Villeneuve maybe Montoya as the last person to be successful from Indycar / CART / Champ Car

i think that if Riccardio goes back, consider where verstappen is now. it would be fully in the Irvine, Barrichello mould. schumacher era
My point exactly he will be fast enough to take points off everyone else but won't be allowed to challenge Verstappen

A sort of Ronnie Peterson and Mario Andretti partnership back in 1978 because Ronnie was faster but kept being Mario because he was contracted No 2 and Lotus saved his career after a poor seasons at Tyrell more like that then Barrichello and Schumacher

He would be do a better job at Red Bull to Verstappen than what Kimi did at Ferrari to Vettel

No Colton Herta talk then?

I thought that the reason he left RB because they favoured Verstappen and he had no chance of the WDC, however much like Alonso he picked the wrong teams, probably due to lack of choice and the problem he had with the McLaren car, whatever that was. Now it seems he has to accept a No2 position if he goes back to RB and assuming he has the old speed.

recent test apparently showed he would have line up 2nd fastest on the grid

I have not found anyone who disagrees that he will have to accept No 2 to Verstappen or Red Bull will remind him they saved his career

I will say that it is impossible to be even better coming back to F1 as Magnussen and Hulkenberg have proven

Now that would be a rude shock if Ricciardo was

no unfortunately, the speed is there from colton herta in indycar. because he is 1 of the best American drivers. anyone has watched indycar would agree

he's taken the last 2 poles but reminds me abit of leclerc there is always something that stops him from fulfilling his potential. because he is undoubtedly underperforming. should be much higher in the championship. lost the lead 3 times crashed at st Petersburg, poor pit strategy in road America, pit limiter broke in mid ohio. for me he has to challenge for the championship to be considered but its mad a man of his talent is yet too

but it was more rubbered in track & potentially a C4 & C5 tyre. so we cant compare with anything

but what we cant underestimate Riccardo is under more pressure than at any point in his career. because if he doesnt beat tsunoda in the slowest car on the grid, so its even tougher as he will be likely going out in Q1 alot this season. he is finished

That is interesting given all the positives
