Most Undeserved Grand Prix Winner

Thierry Boutsen (remember him? No, thought not) .

Yeah i remember him won 3 races, 2 in the wet & and one quite epicly in Hungry 1990 with Senna kissing his jacksy for almost the entire race!

The great thing about knowing of Thierry Boutsen is if anyone poses the infamous "name 3 famous Belgians" question you can respond with Boutsen, Jacky Ickx and Eddie Mercx. After those three I'm onto Tin Tin :snigger:

Here's a file I maintain that shows the race winners in each decade.

Champions are in bold red, while the Indy 500
winners are in green.

%age is the percentage races won in that decade only
0-4 & 5-9 indicate wins in each half of the decade
* shared wins
+ won again in following decade

Interesting stats too - It adds support (not that any were needed) to the usual entries in the eternal question of 'Best drivers ever', and the commonly-recognized best of each era clearly lead each decade, with the caveat of Jackie Stewart and Ayrton Senna crossing decades.

The Nelson Piquet figures make me smile. Won at least one race every year between 1980 and 1987. Go to Lotus as reigning world champion to replace Ayrton Senna. The car uses the same Honda engines as Mclaren and is an update of the previous years race winning 99T. What do you get? Two rubbish years in two rubbish cars, failing to qualify alongside Nakajima and not a great deal else. Move to Beneton for 1990 and resume winning again.

Funny world.

And here's another table showing the winners in each season.

Indy 500 excluded

First wins are in bold italic, champions are in red, solo wins are in bold green.

The return to form at Benetton may have been influenced by Nelson's pay-per-point contract...

You can also use italics and underline if you want something to stand out better, e.g.
Normal
Bold
Italic
Underlined
Bold, italic, underlined
Or even change the background colour, e.g.
Normal
[bg=#AA0000]Red background, white text[/bg]

Great stuff, Brian, good to see you back.

Has anyone mentioned Giancarlo Baghetti in connection with this thread?

Debuted in 1961 in a Ferrari that was far superior to anything else out there; qualified slower than his three team-mates at Reims (5 1/2 seconds off pole in the same car..!) and yet inherited victory when they all ran into problems. Even then he tried his best to throw it away, battling with Dan Gurney's far inferior Porsche.

OK, he won on his debut, which is rare, but he never looked remotely like winning again in a career that went quite steeply downhill.

And I think some of you have been a little harsh with poor Thierry Boutsen. :D

Shall we have a vote at some point people?

I'm going to look at the 21 'one hit wonders' (excludes the Indy 500 winners), and see if they
ever started from pole position:

Alesi did twice, and Bonnier, Pace, Brambilla, Kubica & Kovalainen did once.

Of the others, who set a fastest lap?

Beltoise (4), Ginther (3), Bandini, Cevert, Mass, Nannini (all 2), Taruffi, Musso, Baghetti, Ireland, Scarfiotti &
Nilsson (once each).

That leaves three others:

Luigi Fagioli, who did lead 3 GPs (8 laps),
Peter Gethin, one GP, 3 laps,
Olivier Panis, one GP, 16 laps

It has to be Peter Gethin.

A win by a comfortable margin of 00.01 seconds from Ronnie Peterson!

His best grid start was 5th, and he only scored 2 other points in Formula One.

In 33 GPs, he scored 1 win and 2 sixths, qualifying in the top 10 three times.

That is a pretty persuasive case BWL!

And I think some of you have been a little harsh with poor Thierry Boutsen

I read in Tommy Byrnes Autobiog that Boutsen was one of the drivers he was up against at the 1980 year end Mclaren try out. Byrne beat Boutsen by a considerable margin despite the Mclaren mechanics being ordered to put throttle stops in the car before Byrne had a go. Boutsen wins 3 Grand Prix, Byrne disappears into oblivion - life just ain't fair.

Can I just throw back in Jochen Mass. His one win was half points in at the tragic Spanish GP of 1975 and thats because all the good drivers had crashed or refused to race (I may be embelishing a little here LOL ). At least Peter Gethin won a race fair and square rather than happening to be in the lead when the race was stopped.
