Team History

The Mercedes team history splits into two parts. In 1954 the famous pre-war Silver Arrows entered the F1 world championship and recorded a 1-2 at their first race. Fangio went on to win the drivers championship that year and again in 1955. Mercedes withdrew at the end of the 1955 season after the accident which killed 80 spectators at Le Mans which involved one of their cars.

The current team entered F1 in 2010 after Mercedes bought Brawn Grand Prix. Brawn Grand Prix, winners of the Drivers Championship, with Jenson Button, and the constructor’s championship in 2009, grew out of the ashes of Honda’s F1 entry after Honda had withdrawn from F1 at the end of the 2008 season after only a single Grand Prix win for Button in Hungary 2006.

Prior to the Honda takeover in 2006 the team had raced under the name of British America racing which had acquired the assets and race entry of the Tyrrell F1 team in 1999. BAR competed in 118 races without a single victory. The high points for the team were 2 pole positions (both for Button – San Marino 2004 and Canada 2005) and 2nd in the constructors championship in 2004.

Tyrrell were amongst the most successful private F1 teams taking part in 463 Grands Prix, scoring 33 victories and 3 Drivers Championships, all with Jackie Stewart.

2010

Having replaced Button and Barrichello with Nico Rosberg and 7 times WDC Michael Schumacher many expected great things of the new Mercedes team in 2010 but they had an indifferent season.

Rosberg managed 3 podiums for the team but Schumacher, coming back from retirement, struggled with the new cars, tyres and limited testing under the revised regulations. The team finished 4th in the Constructors Championship.

2011

For 2011 Mercedes retain the same driver line up and are hoping for better things from their MGP W02 chassis.

I think Bill is referring to 2012 testing.

less of a problem than last year I would think. At least they are moving forwards whereas Ferrari are going backwards

the additional engineers will help but I think they will beat Ferrari but not quite be good enough to beat MClaren and Red Bull

I am inclined to agree. I will reserve judgement, but that is certainly the way it looks right now.

Bloomberg are reporting that Mercedes have rejected CVC's contract terms, I guess this is the concorde agreement?

Is this related to the recent news that certain teams have been invited take up shares in CVC? Can't remember where I heard that from ... and that the offer had not been made to McLaren (among others).

My intrepid alter egos at Rooting Today were going to follow that up and forgot. thanks for reminding me. We'd better get stuck into rooting out the sordid details. it's bound to be a corker ... 8-)

Well pull your finger out Fenders, Bloomberg and Rooters are my only source of news! Mind you, as a proctologist friend once told me, "don't look into it too far, brown nosing doesn't mean the same thing in this game!"

LOL

.. as it happens theformula1 has some more from Das Speigel, apparently.:)

This talks about bonuses for "the top three" - Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren - with the rest of the teams just getting "a share" of the spoils from TV rights ...

Methinks this is going to be a complex financial web of wheezes ..8-)

Di Resta and Hulkenberg beware these boys are coming for those seats you think of as yours!

They may look like an R.E.M style 80's folk rock band but from what I've heard they have a lot of talent. Robert Wickens beat Jean Eric Vergne to the World Series 3.5 title last year. Christian Vietoris is still oly 22 and had 2 years in GP2 both time he gradually working his way up the order. Robert Merhi I know the least about but his junior record looks pretty good. Anyways these lucky 3 are to be mentored by Michael Schumacher and are seen as the most exciting team prospect since the days of Schumie, Wendlinger and Frentzen. We shall see.

However with Di Resta and possibley Hulkenberg on the radar, Sam Bird getting some serious backing from them and now these 3 on the radar Merc certainly have some options if they decide Michael and Nico ain't getting the job done. I'm sure they'll let Schumacher retire with grace and become part of the back up team but Mr Rosberg has to get his game together he's been around a little bit too long to be the next big thing now and he may become yesterdays news if one of these really is the next big thing.

Anyone think that Mercs win yesterday has finally given Lewis Hamilton an option should he want to leave Mclaren? Was noticable that he was very pally with Hauge and Rosberg.

It'll certanly give him leverage in contract negotiations.
