Luiz Razia

Born in Brazil in April 1989 Razia spent most of his early career racing in south america becoming the F3 south american champion in 2006. His career after that became very bitty for instance he took part in just 3 international Formula 3000 races winning them all but didn't appear for the rest of the championship. The same happened when he came into GP2 in fact he was team mates with Max Chilton for all of one GP2 round at the begining of the 2008 series before the team dropped both drivers.

Razia was in and out of the series after that but in 2010 had a full year with Pastor Maldonado as his team mate. Pastor won the title and Razia only came 11th which did him no favours at all. He did test for Virgin racing in the young drivers test. I 2011 he became part of the AirAsia team which meant he also got some test time with Caterham(then Lotus). Davide Valsrcchi was his team mate and despite neither doing too badly they didn't have the funds of other drivers and were replaced. Both found other drives though and got into direct competition for the title. The battle was won by Valsechhi in the end but Razia certainly did a lot to boost his rep.

After establishing the runner up spot on GP2 Razia set about securing an F1 drive. With Marussia already plumping for Max Chilton it looked like Caterham was his chance but with the sudden exit of Timo Glock, his backing secured him a seat with the team. Something he announced a week before the team did.

There is no doubt that Razia landed his seat due to funding but lets remember that he did beat all the other GP2 rookies that are on the grid last year and in a spec series this means more because it couldn't just be down to the car. He also seems to have got himself into a team that under Pat Symonds guidence seems to be moving upwards.

So do we think Luiz will be a one year thing that gets spit out the Marussia machine or do we think he'll establish himself on the grid. On paper he should be ahead of British team mate Max Chilton but do we think that will happen?

It would be somewhat ironic at this late stage of the day if either Timo makes a comeback or even funnier still, Heiki receives and invite.

Kobayashi has £1.4m hanging around, and presumably a chance of attracting Japanese sponsorship or even Honda/Toyota engines in the future. If £1.4m isn't enough, then at least you've got Kobayashi!

Would be my choice but having said that a Heiki who would be chomping at the bit to stick it to his old team and your closest rival would be be something I would have to consider.

Lets remember Kovi spent a good couple of years working with Pat Symonds too.

Personally I think Kovi coming in at the last min for Marussia at Australia and nicking a 10th place for a point would be a brilliant story. We'll see though.

this would be a turn up for the books but then again Marussia tried to play devil's advocate and it could sting them noe

Re: The Razia situation.

It would seem Marussia are saying if he comes up with the cash he'll be racing which is fair enough. So as they are giving him time to come up with the cash shouldn't they at least give him some testing time in case he does come up with it? Otherwise foot and shooting cime to mind.

They have the chance of beating Caterham and getting 10th place thus getting a bigger share of the TV money thus increasing their budget thus giving them more resources to develop the car in order to get it somewhere near where they can score points.

If everyone took that attitude only 3 teams would turn up and F1 would be a bit poo.

Razia is the first casualty of the season; he has had his contract terminated by Marussia due to non payment of fees.

Well that was a waste of a profile wasn't it? I would feel sad about it but I actually think Bianchi prob deserves the seat more!

Razia has said he has no hard feelings towards Marussia as they did what they had to do and he's actually happy for Bianchi as he thinks he deserves a drive in F1 this year. He says he hopes he can get into F1 at somepoint but for now he's just going to go home and 'be sad for a few weeks'

See now I feel bad for the guy. Well he didn't show us his driving skills but at least he showed he has class. Jamie Alguersauri take note.

His thread even seems to have lost its place in the drivers section on Clip The Apex. Gutted.

I think Luis Razia situation was different to Jaime Alguarsauri

for a start Luis Razia was promised a drive on the basis he bought sponsors to the team... he thought he had sponsors lined up and then it fell through and he said the problem was 3rd party and not his fault so he knew there could be a risk of his contract canceled. Marussia made it clear to him

---------------

Algarsuari's situation was he was clearly promised a drive and was told to wait for a few things to sort out and then an announcment will be made so he was kept waiting for it

You can understand his frustration and anger..it has happened to a lot of people currently who are promised a job but did not get it because verbal agreements do not mean a thing

I am nit sure if Jaime was suggested or mistakenly believe not to talk to other teams as well

I've been in Jaime's situation where I've been promised a job just wait for the call to be confirmed and never got it being kept waiting

I am sure there are others in the same position job wise ... it seems more common with what is happening today

Razia knew he would only get the drive if he came up with sponsors so he knew the score from the beginning

Jaime probably on thinking he had a drive was telling his rep/ agent not to engage other teams

Unfortunately verbal agreements are not legally binding or there would be serious problems

I think your missing my point. Alguersauri has spent the last year telling everyone how unfair it is he's not in F1 and how much better he is than anyone you can think of. He's taken time out in the media again and again to broadcast this and really has nothing to back it up. Razia has had a dream snatched from him at the last moment and still has the class to say well done to the guy who's taken his place and come out in the media to say he deserves it when no one would have blamed him for just slinking off and having a sulk. To me that shows far more class.

If Alguersauri put his head down and showed people he was as good as he said he is then maybe he'd get a seat. Mouthing off at one and all isn't.

Algarsuari is not the only one though ...Hulkenberg was dropped in 2010 and he reiterated that he should drive because of his talent and not his wallet or his backers

There are other drivers like Jaime a certain Di Resta said he is good enough for F1 . Razia knew the score from the beginning with Marussia if you come up with X amount you;ve got the drive or nothing

It is a bit difficult for Jaime to prove himself if there is no testing really to show this and I thought last year he outshone Buemi so why is he not the 3rd driver in Red Bull then

Algarsuari is not the only one though ...Hulkenberg was dropped in 2010 and he reiterated that he should drive because of his talent and not his wallet or his backers

Hulkenberg earned his right to stay in F1 and his results in other categories were enough to earn him a drive without having any financial backing.

The driver who replaced him took 4 years to win the GP2 title, while he did it in 1, and let's not forget how much Maldonado brought/brings to the team.

why is he not the 3rd driver in Red Bull then

He said he didn't want it, and if anything, him and Buemi were evenly matched, with the latter having awful luck mechanically and other outside factors when it mattered.
